  12. earned her
  13. um
  14. her bachelor's
  15. in law and master's in Islamic
  16. international law from UC Berkeley and
  17. PhD in in international law as well from
  18. um
  19. >> University of London.
  20. >> University of London. Thank you.
  21. >> [clears throat]
  22. >> um
  23. Dr. Jinan Yousef has been an author for
  24. over a decade and most recently
  25. published the book Reflecting on the

  27. um Remembering Allah through Twaqa. um
  28. co-authored with
  29. Sheikh Alaeddin. She has been a student
  30. of Sheikh Akram Nadwi for many years and
  31. currently studies tafsir and hadith at
  32. Al-Salam Institute. She's passionate
  33. about helping Muslims connect to Allah
  34. through knowing him by his names.
  35. >> [snorts]
  36. >> And our Sheikh Alaeddin needs no
  37. introduction, but for anyone who's lucky
  38. enough to be joining us for the first
  39. time tonight,
  40. uh I'll introduce him all the same.
  41. >> [clears throat]
  42. >> Sheikh Alaeddin El Bakri is
  43. an Islamic scholar, speaker, and
  44. community leader of Palestinian
  45. heritage. He studied Islamic sciences in
  46. Jordan and earned degrees in Islamic and
  47. international law and history, receiving
  48. ijazahs in the Quran, hadith, and sirah
  49. from scholars in Jordan, Saudi Arabia,
  50. and Pakistan. Since coming to the US in
  51. 1996 as an imam, he helped establish
  52. several organizations focused on youth
  53. empowerment, education, and community
  54. service, including IMAN,
  55. Inner City Inner City Muslim Action
  56. Network.
  57. Uh My Dean based in Socal
  58. and Marwa like Foundation and Tawheed
  59. Was Institute. His mission is to unite
  60. and uplift Muslim communities through
  61. learning, mentorship, and service.
  62. Jazakallah Khair. Thank you so much both
  63. for joining us here tonight.
  64. >> Thank you.
  65. >> Uh so actually to start off
  66. what um
  67. Actually Dr. Tan if you could introduce
  68. us to
  69. to the book and what inspired you to to
  70. come to the journey to write this book.
  71. >> Jazakallah Khair.
  72. Uh first Jazakallah Khair for hosting us
  73. and for having us here. It's such an
  74. honor. It's actually my first time
  75. coming to the center.
  76. Um
  77. so subhanallah the book really
  78. um
  79. it you know as most books kind of start
  80. out I was like it was more of a a
  81. personal thing where I felt that I was
  82. remembering Allah. I was saying words of
  83. remembrance but I didn't feel that it
  84. was kind of you know penetrating my
  85. heart, right? And I think a lot of us
  86. have felt this way. And so that was kind
  87. of the start and the seed of it because
  88. the times when I felt that I did connect
  89. I was like oh my god it completely it
  90. doesn't just change your day it changes
  91. you, right? Like subhanallah.
  92. And so in 2024 I so I was thinking you
  93. know it would be great to actually just
  94. write a book about dhikr, right? Like
  95. just really go through like why is dhikr
  96. so important, the meaning of the adhkar
  97. so that we really connect to Allah
  98. subhana wa ta'ala through the adhkar and
  99. also how to remember Allah subhana wa
  100. ta'ala.
  101. And so in 2024 Tawheed Was Institute
  102. hosted me here.
  103. And so we did a couple of talks and
  104. Sheikh asked me he said you know what
  105. projects are you working on? I was like
  106. you know I've been thinking of a book on
  107. dhikr. He said done. Khalas we're going
  108. to we'll do it together. And so, uh I
  109. spent that uh 2024 kind of um
  110. with Sheikh Alaa uh brainstorming uh you
  111. know, kind of recording him also
  112. speaking about the the different um
  113. um adkhar. And so, it's really like I
  114. hope inshallah it's it's a labor of
  115. love, right? Because at the end of the
  116. day we we kind of we start with
  117. ourselves, but we also want to
  118. inshallah, you know, uh benefit others.
  119. And so, that's kind of really the
  120. purpose of the book is really
  121. connecting to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
  122. through remembering him, and then
  123. changing so that the remembrance, right?
  124. It's not just kind of this action of I
  125. just I do it with my tongue, which is
  126. important, but we also want to reach
  127. those higher levels of like what does it
  128. mean to be
  129. transformed by the remembrance of Allah
  130. subhanahu wa ta'ala.
  131. >> Yups. Sheikh Alaa, and uh same question.
  132. Same question to you, uh Sheikh. Sounds
  133. like
  134. it didn't take you much to uh jump in on
  135. this project once you had the inkling
  136. from from Dr. Jinan. What what inspired
  137. you to make that leap?
  138. >> Um I have been wanting to,
  139. you know, write or, you know,
  140. I always talk about the remembrance of
  141. Allah. It's interesting in
  142. in our faith in our book, it says
  143. remember God.
  144. So, what's the opposite of remembrance?
  145. It's to forget.
  146. Uh this mic is a bit s- different. So,
  147. um
  148. how do we
  149. basically
  150. move from forgetting to remembering? So,
  151. that's the question.
  152. Um
  153. the question becomes what do you
  154. remember most of the day?
  155. What are you thinking about most of the
  156. day?
  157. What occupies your mind most of the day.
  158. And has it helped you? Has it helped you
  159. to
  160. think the way you think?
  161. Focus on the way you focus.
  162. Um or do you need a shift, a mind shift
  163. to a better state of mind,
  164. something better to remember?
  165. When we say remember, it's not just like
  166. ah I remember I forgot. Where is my
  167. keys? Oh, I remember where my keys and
  168. life moves on.
  169. Remembering means
  170. to make God alive in your heart.
  171. If Allah is in your heart, your heart is
  172. alive.
  173. Your soul is alive. Your mind is alive.
  174. If you have a heart and mind and soul
  175. that doesn't
  176. um have God in it,
  177. then it's like a
  178. it's death.
  179. Because what are you thinking about?
  180. Everything you think about is temporary.
  181. And everything is um
  182. can leave you
  183. or you can leave it.
  184. Whatever you love in this world,
  185. you will either leave it and pass on and
  186. pass away.
  187. Or it will leave you.
  188. So, the human constantly is feeling this
  189. anxiety feeling, this panic.
  190. Where
  191. um
  192. I'm I'm going to lose my money. I'm
  193. going to lose my money. I'm going to
  194. I'm going to lose the one who I love.
  195. Oh, he's going to dump me. Oh, she's
  196. going to ditch me, you know.
  197. It's always we're afraid of losing. So,
  198. I'm going to lose my job. Oh my god, I'm
  199. going to lose my job.
  200. Uh I'm going to lose my home.
  201. It's usually either financial
  202. or I'm going to lose my health. So, the
  203. human without an anchor
  204. will constantly live in the state of
  205. anxiety and panic.
  206. And that And that's not a good life.
  207. That's a not good quality of life. So,
  208. how do we counter that? We counter that
  209. with occupying our minds with a
  210. different
  211. issue, different
  212. matter. And that different matter is to
  213. think that you are not alone.
  214. God is with you. God will take care of
  215. you. Allah will take care of you.
  216. Uh you are you are uh you're not weak.
  217. God is the most powerful. He got your
  218. back.
  219. Um
  220. you're not lost.
  221. God has guided you.
  222. So, if you look at today, what's the
  223. most important topic we can talk about
  224. today?
  225. Stress, anxiety, depression, mental
  226. illness, emotional health.
  227. Um how the the the the
  228. the root solution
  229. and medicine for all of this these
  230. topics
  231. is
  232. to bring Allah, God almighty, in our
  233. hearts and in our mind. Then we are able
  234. to to to face life with all of its
  235. challenges and ups and downs. So, this
  236. has been on my mind and
  237. my nature, I'm an
  238. um
  239. auditory like I like to to speak.
  240. Um when I speak, all the ideas come.
  241. When I hold the pen,
  242. all the ideas disappear.
  243. >> [laughter]
  244. >> So, she is in mashallah, she's opposite
  245. of me.
  246. So, we had to create a trick, so she
  247. would ask me and she is recording on the
  248. phone
  249. and then all the ideas come.
  250. And then she will go home and then she
  251. will document it and then she will
  252. update, so um
  253. may Allah reward her. So, that's how we
  254. teamed up each one with their strength.
  255. And alhamdulillah, it's a the the
  256. project, you know, got published and
  257. this is first edition. Every year we
  258. intend to add little bit more and more
  259. and more. We intentionally made it an
  260. easy read
  261. so that people are not intimidated by
  262. the size of the book,
  263. but rather say, "Oh, I can read this,
  264. you know." So, hopefully, inshallah.
  265. >> Masha Allah, and I love but baraka in in
  266. this new works and
  267. and something that that shines through
  268. in in both your your stories and
  269. inspirations is how
  270. giving and how much this is an act of of
  271. giving and you know, that this is an act
  272. of Allah giving through you.
  273. So, what's
  274. like what do you want
  275. people readers to to receive from from
  276. this book? What
  277. how should they be as far as what should
  278. they be coming away from this with, Dr.
  279. Jinan?
  280. >> Bismillah
  281. um
  282. you know, subhanallah, I just kind of
  283. also
  284. piggyback off what Sheikh was saying,
  285. you know, at any moment, right? We have
  286. like millions of thoughts, right? Like
  287. we're constantly thinking of something,
  288. right?
  289. Whether it's good, whether it's bad. And
  290. when, you know,
  291. almost even to counter that, right?
  292. Because maybe you're the type of person
  293. who kind of who spirals, right?
  294. Um or
  295. on the other hand, you're just kind of
  296. go go go. So, you're thinking of like
  297. what I need to do and then the next
  298. thing, the next thing, the next thing,
  299. right? So, it's it it's almost like the
  300. same where like we never take a step
  301. back to kind of to ground ourselves.
  302. And you know, when we look at kind of
  303. like modern like you know, really like
  304. pop psychology, right? And this is like
  305. you know, the practice of affirmations.
  306. And it's almost like they're trying to
  307. kind of reel you back, right? But the
  308. practice of affirmations, at least the
  309. way how I find it is that it
  310. brings it back to the self, right? And
  311. maybe there's some benefit there
  312. somewhere, right? But dhikr, really
  313. remembrance of Allah, and obviously
  314. there's different forms of dhikr in the
  315. book we focus, you know, specifically
  316. kind of on
  317. uh the words that we are taught through
  318. the Quran and through the Prophet
  319. Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
  320. Um
  321. dhikr, in a sense, really directs you,
  322. right? It's a different type of
  323. affirmation, right? It's this
  324. affirmation of you, as Sheikh Abdullah
  325. was saying, you remind yourself of who
  326. Allah is, right? You You kind of you go
  327. outside of yourself. So, instead of
  328. spiraling, for example, negative
  329. thoughts, right? Or instead of thinking,
  330. "What is the next thing that I have to
  331. do? Then the next thing, the next
  332. thing." Like, I'm I'm the type of person
  333. I'm such a planner. I'm always thinking
  334. about what is the next thing that I need
  335. to do, right? And dhikr just gives you
  336. that stillness, right? That it's like
  337. actually like, "I need to just focus on
  338. Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala." And dhikr also
  339. helps us to to priori- prioritize,
  340. right? It's just like, "What What is the
  341. priority in my life?" I'm always
  342. thinking about what I'm what I'm going
  343. to be doing next.
  344. Where is Allah in that?
  345. And dhikr really just brings you back to
  346. what is important.
  347. And so, in terms of what inshallah we
  348. want, I mean, for myself, what I want to
  349. take, you know, out of this, and
  350. inshallah what I hope that others take
  351. out of this is really actually that
  352. connection to Allah,
  353. right? I mean, we pray five times a day,
  354. and Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala he says, you
  355. know, when he tells us Musa in the
  356. Quran,
  357. he says, "Wa aqimis salata lidhikri."
  358. Right? Like, establish prayer for what?
  359. For my remembrance, so that you can
  360. actually be
  361. connected to Allah, so that your heart
  362. can feel the presence of Allah Subhana
  363. Wa Ta'ala. Like, we all know, right? We
  364. all know that Allah is with us.
  365. And you know, you read in the book, we
  366. talk about this concept of this idea of
  367. ma'iyyah, right? Which we've kind of
  368. translated, like, I stole from someone
  369. else, actually. Uh which is the idea of
  370. withness, right? So, Allah is with
  371. everybody, right?
  372. But, there is a special type of
  373. withness, this ma'iyyah, is Allah being
  374. with you, right? For specific
  375. categories. So, when Allah says, you
  376. know,
  377. that Allah is with those who patiently
  378. persevere. We know intrinsically, we
  379. know it means something different than
  380. just Allah being with everybody, right?
  381. And similarly, when you are in the
  382. remembrance [clears throat] of Allah
  383. subhana wa ta'ala,
  384. Allah is with you.
  385. And I think what
  386. for myself what I'm searching for what
  387. we really hope for this is actually for
  388. us to be with Allah and for Allah to be
  389. with us, right? Like that is the whole
  390. purpose of this book to understand these
  391. common remembrances that we say
  392. sometimes without even thinking, right?
  393. And to really have their meanings rooted
  394. in our hearts that you can actually you
  395. find solace in those words because it's
  396. not just those words, those words are
  397. actually bringing you to Allah subhana
  398. wa ta'ala.
  399. And that you actually realize that
  400. it's so easy
  401. for Allah
  402. to be with me, right? Cuz a lot of times
  403. we sometimes we put barriers between
  404. ourselves and Allah.
  405. So, I need to be the super Muslim or,
  406. you know, I messed up in a really bad
  407. way. There's no way that I can be close
  408. to Allah subhana wa ta'ala.
  409. But really that adhkar and Allah makes
  410. it so easy like Allah just removes those
  411. barriers to entry. Like there's no
  412. gatekeeping, right? Over here it's like
  413. you just remember Allah
  414. and, you know, subhana wa ta'ala you do
  415. it a lot, but then Allah is with you.
  416. So, when you're seeking forgiveness, it
  417. must mean at a at a basic level that
  418. you're reflecting on yourself.
  419. And why are you reflecting on yourself?
  420. Because you want to be better for the
  421. sake of Allah. You're saying, "Yallah, I
  422. messed up and I keep messing up and I
  423. feel terrible about myself, but Yallah,
  424. I know that you forgive." So, you're
  425. saying, "Allahumma ghfir li ya Allah,
  426. astaghfirullah." Right? And Allah is
  427. with you. Like how amazing is that? Like
  428. you know with people, we
  429. we sometimes don't apologize even if we
  430. know we're wrong because we feel like
  431. we're going to be rejected by them,
  432. right? Whereas Allah
  433. like God is like no, you just you ask me
  434. just you say sorry, you reflect on
  435. yourself, you want to be better, you say
  436. these words
  437. and Allah
  438. only forgives you. God not only forgives
  439. you, he opens for you doors that you
  440. didn't even know existed, right? Because
  441. that act of humility
  442. brings you closer to Allah. When you
  443. understand, you know,
  444. when you wake up in the morning you say
  445. "Alhamdulillah." And then you have it
  446. "Praise be to Allah." You know, "I'm
  447. grateful to Allah that he has given me
  448. life." You you started your morning on
  449. such a positive note, right? This is
  450. like I'm alive. Alhamdulillah. That
  451. means, you know, Allah wants something,
  452. there's an opportunity in this day for
  453. me to be close to Allah. So, I think
  454. what we hope that people get out of this
  455. book is really this connection to Allah
  456. that in every moment I'm I'm making the
  457. choice. I'm making the choice to be
  458. consumed by my thoughts, right? Of
  459. [clears throat] everything else.
  460. Or I can make that choice and it can it
  461. can start with the tongue. You're just
  462. like, "Oh my goodness, but this focus is
  463. really hard and if I can't, you know, if
  464. I can't focus then I shouldn't do it at
  465. all." No, just do it, right? Do it with
  466. your tongue.
  467. Right? And the more you do it, the more
  468. it penetrates your heart. Inshallah. So,
  469. that's that's Inshallah what we what I
  470. hope Inshallah for for the book.
  471. >> Yeah, go ahead.
  472. >> Likewise, the strength of our faith.
  473. >> Amen.
  474. I mean, um
  475. to complement what uh
  476. Sister Jinan said and so that I don't
  477. end up repeating the same thing, my
  478. intention
  479. and my hope that you will come up with
  480. this
  481. understanding how easy it is to make the
  482. gift.
  483. Uh
  484. the gift in our faith, remembrance,
  485. refers to
  486. four or five different things. When we
  487. pray five times a day, it's called
  488. remembrance in the Quran.
  489. Oh, you will believe when the call is
  490. made to salat al-Jumu'ah, then come to
  491. dhikr Allah. So, Allah called prayers,
  492. the five daily prayers, he called it
  493. remembrance. Allah called his book in
  494. Allah has sent down the dhikr. Wa inna
  495. lahu la hafizun. Allah called the Quran
  496. remembrance. It reminds you.
  497. Allah called
  498. uh du'a dhikr.
  499. And also du'a means supplication, asking
  500. God, invocation. Please, God, I need
  501. you. I need this. When you ask God of
  502. something, whatever you're asking, it's
  503. called calling God, du'a.
  504. That's also dhikr because when you call
  505. God, you say, "I want something. I need
  506. something. Please protect me from
  507. something."
  508. Now, you you remember, when you talk to
  509. someone, you remember So, God is present
  510. in your mind and heart.
  511. And the fourth way is the tasbih.
  512. Like after every salah, we say
  513. subhanallah, subhanallah, subhanallah,
  514. alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah,
  515. alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu
  516. Akbar, Allahu Akbar. So, the remembrance
  517. that we do,
  518. we do them frequently and in certain
  519. numbers, 33, 33, 33.
  520. Um
  521. there's a fifth way, which is we call it
  522. adhkar al-sabah and adhkar al-masa'.
  523. The remembrance of God in the morning
  524. and the remembrance of God in the
  525. evening.
  526. And those are certain
  527. sentences. You know how like now this
  528. thing popped up?
  529. You should wake up in the morning and
  530. look at yourself in the mirror and say,
  531. "Yes, I can make it. I believe in
  532. myself. I'm not ugly." Even though I
  533. think I am ugly, but you know. But
  534. anyways, you know, this is how uh they
  535. say they should speak to yourself,
  536. affirmation.
  537. Um
  538. it's fascinating that without looking in
  539. the mirror, our prophet
  540. and sal Allah alayhi wa sallam, God
  541. peace and blessing be upon him, in the
  542. morning
  543. he will say sentences
  544. that
  545. sets up the whole day. Like I'm starting
  546. my day
  547. knowing that you are my God
  548. you take care of me I will fulfill my
  549. promise. I will live up to my
  550. covenant with you. I will fulfill to the
  551. best of my ability my obligations.
  552. It's it's a fascinating way to start the
  553. day. You start by affirmations.
  554. You know, when someone converts to
  555. Islam, we tell we say you should take
  556. the shahada.
  557. You should say, I bear witness that
  558. there is no God but one God. I bear
  559. witness that Muhammad is his final
  560. prophet and messenger. That's how you
  561. become a Muslim.
  562. Born Muslims think we don't need to take
  563. shahada.
  564. But actually our prophet used to give
  565. himself shahada
  566. every day in the morning and every day
  567. in the evening.
  568. And just to affirm.
  569. And he will say it in a very fancy way.
  570. Oh Allah, I wake up in the morning
  571. and I make
  572. you bear witness
  573. and I make your creation bear witness
  574. and I make the angels bear witness and I
  575. make the angels that carry your throne
  576. bear witness.
  577. It's the I bear witness that there is no
  578. God but you.
  579. And Muhammad is his final prophet and
  580. messenger.
  581. Tell me that's not a mind-blowing unique
  582. way. You're not saying I bear witness.
  583. No, you're saying, "Ya Allah, I make you
  584. bear witness that I bear witness."
  585. That's not mind-blowing. Why? Cuz on the
  586. day of judgment Allah says
  587. "Provide your proof. Who are your
  588. witnesses?" And you will say
  589. "You, Allah, are my witness."
  590. And the angels that carry your throne,
  591. the biggest angels, are my and all the
  592. angels are my witnesses and all your
  593. creation, the skies, the stars, and then
  594. they all come and say, "Yes,
  595. Ya Allah, we bear witness that he said
  596. that."
  597. So, these are called Adhkar al-Sabah
  598. wal-Masa.
  599. And the And And And the And And when And
  600. then we have within the remembrance, we
  601. have sentences.
  602. Allah is enough for me, and he's the
  603. best to rely on. Imagine you just got
  604. hit with the bad news.
  605. You feel like you lost something.
  606. Allah's enough for me. I lost my health,
  607. I lost my money, I lost a friend, but
  608. God is enough.
  609. And he is the best one for me to rely
  610. on.
  611. It's It's It's a It's a sentence that
  612. requires a thinking that impacts your
  613. heart and mind and soul and anchors you
  614. and calms you down so that you don't
  615. panic, you don't go to an anxiety attack
  616. or a panic attack.
  617. Why What I want people to I hope how
  618. easy it is
  619. to make dhikr. So, for example, if we
  620. hear, you and I,
  621. we hear someone makes dhikr istighfar
  622. every day 100 times. Like our prophet
  623. told us, he asks Allah's forgiveness 100
  624. times a day.
  625. Okay? You're like, "Whoa, this guy is
  626. amazing.
  627. Like he's committed." So, I did an
  628. experiment. I held my phone, started the
  629. stopwatch, and said, "Astaghfirullah,
  630. astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah,
  631. astaghfirullah." With this rhythm. Not
  632. too fast, not too slow.
  633. 90 seconds.
  634. A minute and a half it takes you to say,
  635. "Oh Allah, forgive me." 100 times.
  636. And in your mind, it's mission
  637. impossible. "Oh my God, I'm going to say
  638. astaghfirullah 100 times inshallah. When
  639. I become 45 years old, I'll say
  640. astaghfirullah inshallah. When I become
  641. 50, 65, go to Hajj and come back." Man,
  642. it's a It's a minute and a half, 90
  643. seconds.
  644. I did la ilaha illallah la ilaha
  645. illallah. Cuz dhikr, if you boil it
  646. down, it's three statements and on it
  647. you build everything else. First,
  648. astaghfirullah. You want to connect with
  649. God, you want to make sure that you wash
  650. yourself, you cleanse yourself. So, you
  651. start by saying, "Please God, forgive
  652. me. Please God, forgive me. Please God,
  653. forgive me." And you mean it from your
  654. heart.
  655. So, you wash yourself. Now, you are
  656. in a better position to speak to God.
  657. So, then you say, "There's no God but
  658. you. Ya Allah, you're my God, you're my
  659. hopes, you're my fears, you're you're
  660. you're everything. I devote my life. I
  661. love you with all of my heart." So, la
  662. ilaha illallah 100 times.
  663. And then, Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin
  664. wa ala ali Muhammad 100 times. How long
  665. does it say to say la ilaha illallah?
  666. 3 minutes.
  667. How long does it say Allahumma salli ala
  668. Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad? It
  669. logged the longest on my phone. 3
  670. minutes and 65 seconds.
  671. So, you have a complete dhikr of 100
  672. times astaghfirullah, 100 times la ilaha
  673. illallah, 100 times Allahumma salli ala
  674. Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad
  675. within 10 minutes.
  676. You have 24 hours a day.
  677. You got 10 minutes on these 24. And by
  678. the way, if you do them on your driving
  679. to work or to school,
  680. and you do them on the way back,
  681. masha Allah, you're you're you're you
  682. are on a good
  683. start.
  684. You're in a good beginning. So, I hope
  685. that people My hope was
  686. definitely what Dr. Jinan said,
  687. "You can pray on the outside, but your
  688. heart and mind are somewhere else."
  689. Allah told Prophet Musa,
  690. "Wa aqimis salata li dhikri." Establish
  691. prayers so that you will remember me.
  692. Meaning, so that I will become present
  693. in your heart.
  694. So, that here point is And my
  695. complementing point, it's very easy.
  696. If we can have people walk away with
  697. these two meanings, alhamdulillah, then
  698. they will activate this practice in
  699. their life, inshallah.
  700. >> Inshallah.
  701. So that's I mean there's a certain way,
  702. you know, high aspirations and things
  703. that we we seek to do as being Muslims
  704. our way to illuminate to Muslim.
  705. Um,
  706. how
  707. how do we get there? And you know, if
  708. you're taking taking this book as
  709. as a guide, how do you
  710. lay out these steps? How do we how
  711. should one use the book to
  712. um
  713. to reach this better place of of
  714. nearness with Allah, Dr. Gad?
  715. >> Um, I think, you know,
  716. it's really
  717. to just start. Cuz I think a lot of
  718. times we, you know, there's a lot of
  719. barrier to you know, barriers to entry
  720. for certain things, right? And it's just
  721. like [clears throat] I want to reach
  722. this level, but I need to do this. I
  723. need to do that. And there's so many
  724. kind of things that prevent us from uh
  725. it's usually in our minds. So I'm just
  726. kind of like it's a mental barrier,
  727. right? Like that prevents us from you
  728. know, how can I be close to Allah
  729. subhana wa ta'ala? And I would say, you
  730. know, with the book what we try to do is
  731. really to to you know, again, this is
  732. for myself first and foremost and
  733. inshallah for all of us is to say like
  734. just start, right? Like it's something
  735. that is so easy. Like Sheikh was saying,
  736. like in your car, if you know, you just
  737. for 1 second maybe just put down the
  738. radio, you know what I mean? Well,
  739. that's going to listen to the news for
  740. like the next maybe 3 or 4 minutes and
  741. just obviously recite la ilaha illallah,
  742. right? And you just do that. You just
  743. incorporate it kind of in your day
  744. >> [clears throat]
  745. >> and it's so easy to do it. Like this is
  746. one of the acts of worship that doesn't
  747. have doesn't have a prerequisite, right?
  748. If you want to do salah, you have to go
  749. you have to do your wudu for example,
  750. right?
  751. And so there are certain things that
  752. like have prerequisites. You can't do
  753. the thing without doing something else
  754. beforehand, right? Whereas thicker, you
  755. can be really in almost any state,
  756. right? Um and and so subhanallah, I
  757. think one of the things is really just
  758. start.
  759. And the other thing I would say is, you
  760. know,
  761. be almost deliberate about it, right? So
  762. there are at qala sabah and masa, so the
  763. remembrances of the morning and the
  764. evening. Um you know, if you can, uh do
  765. them after, you know, salat al-fajr,
  766. but if you're tired and you just want to
  767. sleep, then do them when you wake up,
  768. right? But actually set time aside. Say,
  769. you know what? I am going to
  770. incorporate, right? Uh these
  771. remembrances in the morning and in the
  772. evening, right? So there is this thing
  773. of just kind of being deliberate about
  774. it. And, you know, I used to do this
  775. thing cuz I I wanted to incorporate
  776. thicker. And again, you know, when
  777. especially when you're working, it's
  778. like it's so easy for everything to
  779. distract you, right? It's just like
  780. you're going from one thing to another,
  781. you're working, this person wants your
  782. attention, that person wants your
  783. attention. And so I was like, you know
  784. what? I used to put like alarms on my
  785. phone
  786. and just every 45 minutes, every 1 hour,
  787. right? Just literally on the timer, 60
  788. seconds,
  789. just pause and remember Allah subhana wa
  790. ta'ala. You know, in the you know,
  791. in the health and wellness world, they
  792. you know, they start talking about every
  793. 45 minutes incorporate, you know, in
  794. your routine what they call an exercise
  795. snack, right? And they say, you know,
  796. every 45 minutes you do like 10 air
  797. squats, right? So at least like you're
  798. moving. And it's like it's so easy,
  799. right? It's like, yeah, wherever I am, I
  800. can I can kind of do that, right? And
  801. this is something that is so much more
  802. important, right? For for our hearts and
  803. for our souls. And again, it's so easy
  804. because, you know, if you're in the car,
  805. you can't do your 10 air squats, right?
  806. Like where are you going to do but you
  807. can say la ilaha illallah, right? And
  808. so, um I think to kind of as you said
  809. like, you know,
  810. get to the the place where we want where
  811. we want to be, right? As we just
  812. starting, right? We're moving the
  813. barriers of entry that are actually
  814. really just mental barriers. They might
  815. be emotional barriers that you might
  816. think, "I'm not good enough, you know,
  817. I'm not like these really amazing
  818. Muslims." Right? And Allah gives you the
  819. easiest act of worship to do. It is so
  820. easy. You know, the person who was the
  821. you know
  822. you could have done something so
  823. terrible, right? But you can also say
  824. immediately after the stuff of Allah
  825. stuff of Allah stuff of Allah, right? So
  826. Allah makes subhanallah the road back to
  827. him
  828. not even a road, right? It's just
  829. literally requires for you to take a
  830. step. And we know the Hadith Qudsi,
  831. right? That you know, if you take a step
  832. towards Allah and it's beautiful, right?
  833. And take to
  834. like in Arabic it's like I you know you
  835. know, and and during the the side,
  836. right? There's this part where like the
  837. men kind of they they run. Like that's
  838. called right? And it's just like just
  839. the imagery of like you took one step,
  840. you took a big you stepped towards Allah
  841. and Allah comes running to you. Like how
  842. much of of does Allah subhana wa ta'ala
  843. just want you to be close to him, right?
  844. Like again, a lot of times we're putting
  845. the emotional barriers, we're putting
  846. the mental barriers. And he makes it so
  847. easy. You don't have to go and do Umrah,
  848. you know, and then come back and order
  849. for the doors to be opened to you,
  850. right? All you need to do is literally
  851. just this one sentence of
  852. la ilaha illallah
  853. or astaghfirullah or alhamdulillah. Just
  854. any of these amazing, you know, um
  855. remembrances that are so
  856. deliberate when you start to break them
  857. down as I was breaking down some
  858. remembrances.
  859. And subhanallah once they permeate your
  860. heart,
  861. really like they actually they give you
  862. direction. You feel the sense of
  863. stillness with Allah, right? And again,
  864. Allah has made it so so so so easy that
  865. there are a acts of worship that you
  866. need to put a lot more effort in it and
  867. it's good and this you know it teaches
  868. us to strive for the sake of Allah but
  869. then these other acts of worship this is
  870. like this is for anytime anytime you
  871. want to be with Allah it's Allah is not
  872. putting any barrier you're putting the
  873. barrier yourself and so I would say just
  874. start
  875. be deliberate and say you know what I'm
  876. going to do this at home in the morning
  877. or do this at home you know in the
  878. evening
  879. and then also incorporate this every
  880. hour thing right like put an alarm on
  881. your phone you know use use your tech
  882. like in
  883. you know in a way that can help you and
  884. just be like okay 60 seconds every one
  885. hour I'm going to say that Allah Allah
  886. right and again you're just bringing
  887. yourself closer to Allah Allah is making
  888. that door for you wide wide wide open so
  889. may Allah make us of the people who
  890. you know
  891. take advantage of the opportunity right
  892. so just to come close to Allah Allah
  893. >> Amen
  894. um
  895. I was uh
  896. just reflecting
  897. isn't it mind-blowing that Allah praises
  898. the believers in the Quran that they
  899. remember him standing
  900. sitting
  901. and laying down
  902. you don't get praised for doing anything
  903. sitting down and laying down except the
  904. Quran
  905. so imagine
  906. why because
  907. if
  908. if
  909. this shows love this shows passion you
  910. have love for Allah and you know the
  911. saddest way to practice religion is to
  912. practice religion without love
  913. it's sad it's dry it's not going to last
  914. long
  915. it will you will flip back and go back
  916. to whatever you were doing
  917. love is very essential and Allah
  918. describes you know
  919. that the believers are in a state of
  920. love with him that they would remember
  921. him standing up, sitting down, and
  922. laying down.
  923. Uh the the the thing is
  924. when
  925. what we have to remember
  926. that between us and remembrance of Allah
  927. there's a sworn enemy
  928. who literally told Allah
  929. I'm going to sit down in in the straight
  930. path and I'm going to make sure your
  931. people, your creation will not follow
  932. the straight path.
  933. We're talking about Shaitan, the devil,
  934. Lucifer, whatever. So
  935. when you come to make dhikr, suddenly
  936. you feel you don't want to make dhikr.
  937. This is a phenomena. You come to make
  938. dhikr and you're like, "I'm not feeling
  939. it."
  940. Imagine how deep our scholars are said
  941. are they said
  942. if you make dhikr while you don't feel
  943. it, you get more reward than making
  944. dhikr while you feel it.
  945. Why?
  946. Because if you make dhikr, there's
  947. people who make dhikr
  948. to feel good.
  949. So the purpose is feeling good and
  950. there's people who make dhikr
  951. for Allah. So if I don't feel like
  952. remembering God, if I don't feel like
  953. saying astaghfirullah or alhamdulillah
  954. or Allahu Akbar or la ilaha illallah and
  955. I actually say it, you will get more
  956. rewarded because my love to Allah and my
  957. remembrance of Allah is not conditional
  958. on me feeling good or not.
  959. Uh when you do dhikr like actually for a
  960. long time
  961. um people don't know this until they try
  962. it. You actually feel high like more
  963. than any drug that you can take in this
  964. world.
  965. But it's a spiritual high. So and that's
  966. a gift from Allah.
  967. But then sometimes Allah will test you
  968. to see are you making dhikr to feel high
  969. or are you making dhikr because Allah's
  970. worth it?
  971. So,
  972. we we
  973. we do the gift for the sake of Allah
  974. Subhana Wa Ta'ala. And and that's very
  975. important for all of us. I hope that
  976. the way people will benefit from this
  977. book. It's a small book, small chapters.
  978. When you read something, a practice, a
  979. meaning, a a one thing explained, stop,
  980. go and practice it, come back.
  981. Read a little bit more, practice it and
  982. come back. Read a little bit more. So,
  983. it's not just like
  984. spiritual entertainment.
  985. We're not
  986. trying to entertain.
  987. We're actually trying to
  988. change ourselves first and foremost
  989. and then
  990. bring the the goodness to the other
  991. people, inshallah. So, that's
  992. >> Inshallah. Jazakallah Khair.
  993. >> Ameen.
  994. >> Wa Iyyak.
  995. I think now we can move on to
  996. inshallah unless you have closing
  997. thoughts or for this portion we can move
  998. on to
  999. question [clears throat] and answer
  1000. answers from
1001. from like well, questions from you
1002. answers from our our teachers.
  1003. Um
  1004. Yeah.
  1005. Sweet.
1006. >> Thank you for the beautiful
  1007. presentation.
1008. One thing that I reflect upon is you
1009. made it clear how easy it is to make
  1010. thicker.
1011. Yet also how easy it
1012. it is for us to be forgetful and not
  1013. make thicker.
1014. >> Why is that? What's the remedy for that?
1015. Why and what's the remedy?
  1016. >> Um
1017. I mean, what you ask is an existential
  1018. question.
  1019. Um
1020. every one of us has to sit down with
  1021. themselves
  1022. and have a conversation.
1023. In the beginning, your self will not
1024. like having this conversation. Your self
1025. does not want to have a conversation
  1026. with you.
1027. Our our our nafs likes to run and hide.
  1028. And Allah described
1029. Our nafs likes to run and hide. There's
1030. nothing wrong with me. Don't talk to me.
1031. Why do you want to talk to me?
1032. That's your nafs when you put it in the
1033. corner. Put yourself in the corner and
  1034. ask yourself
1035. why do I want to do what I want to do in
  1036. life? What's
  1037. What's my biggest concern?
1038. What's my biggest So, I'll give you an
  1039. example.
1040. Majority of us human beings
1041. are worried about what others think of
  1042. us.
  1043. Majority of us.
1044. And that's why they say, it's very
1045. funny, we live and die not living in our
  1046. own head.
1047. Living in other people's head.
  1048. And trying to
1049. uh speculate how other people in their
  1050. head think about us.
1051. So, when you're walking down the street,
1052. you know, you start thinking
1053. do they think I'm ugly?
1054. Like you walk into a room, like do they
  1055. think
1056. Why are you thinking what people are
  1057. thinking?
1058. Think in your head. And that's why they
1059. say when someone is vulnerable about
  1060. something
1061. they think everyone is know their
1062. vulnerability when actually nobody knows
  1063. what's what's
1064. what's wrong with you except you. So,
1065. once you reach to the thing that what's
1066. most important. So, because we worry
1067. about what people think about us, I want
  1068. you to do this
1069. after the class or right now, take your
  1070. phone out,
1071. type in Google search or AI
1072. and share with me the answers. How many
  1073. negative thoughts
1074. How many negative thoughts does an
1075. average human think in any given day?
1076. Can you please share with me the answer?
1077. I had three numbers before, but they
1078. keep on changing based on research. How
1079. many negative thoughts does an average
1080. human think in any day, per day?
1081. >> This is probably the first time a shake
1082. will tell you to take out your phone.
  1083. >> [laughter]
1084. >> Yallah, bismillah. Yes, sister.
  1085. >> 12,000 to 60,000.
  1086. >> 12,000 That's the highest number I've
  1087. heard before.
1088. Bismillah, you are reading, you're just
  1089. quoting. Come on.
1090. Uh Dr. Rami, what they came up?
  1091. >> I see
1092. commonly repeated claim that we have
1093. 60,000 thoughts per day and 80% of which
  1094. are negative.
  1095. >> Thank you.
1096. >> Four to one negative to
  1097. positive.
  1098. >> Four to one.
1099. You see, this is now we're learning
  1100. about ourselves. Yes.
1101. >> Um it says here the average person is
1102. estimated to have about 6,200 thoughts
  1103. per day.
  1104. >> 6,200.
1105. >> Although uh with some older off-cited
  1106. self-help
1107. literature suggests that as many as
  1108. 60,000.
1109. >> Wow, so we went from 6,000 to 60,000
  1110. to 12,000. [clears throat]
1111. Wow, I was actually working with an old
  1112. estimate 355.
  1113. >> [laughter]
  1114. >> So
  1115. I'm
1116. And I thought I was pessimistic, like
1117. negative. It actually turned to be
1118. nothing. But the the the What Why are we
1119. thinking negative thoughts? You see?
1120. Th- This This right here, this research
1121. that we did together explains to you the
1122. importance of the remembrance of Allah.
1123. Is we're constantly thinking negative.
1124. What's the source of it?
  1125. We're constantly feeling vulnerable
1126. and expecting the worst out of life, and
1127. expecting the worst out of people.
1128. And it's giving us not a good life
  1129. quality.
  1130. So,
1131. why we forget? Because we're busy
1132. thinking negatively, we can't even think
1133. positively. We're so busy thinking
1134. negatively, we can't think positively.
1135. Once you realize that, now you start
  1136. becoming into the
1137. business and the action and the practice
1138. of switching your mind way of thinking
  1139. from negative to positive.
  1140. Allah is positive.
1141. Allah is your help. Allah
1142. owns everything in the universe. I'll
1143. take care of you. I'll protect you.
1144. What's bothering you? Talk to me. Tell
  1145. me what's bothering you. I'll protect
1146. you. What do you want? Talk to me. I'll
1147. give it to you. And I'll give it to you
1148. if it's good for you. You have to trust
1149. my wisdom, Allah tells us.
1150. Once you have Allah in your life, then
  1151. you will
1152. have a good quality, and then you will
1153. start wanting to remember Allah more
  1154. because you uh
1155. you feel the effect of it.
1156. It's really good uh life to live with
  1157. the remembrance of Allah.
1158. And and um and once my biggest concern
1159. what people think about me,
1160. most of us think that people think of us
  1161. negatively.
  1162. So, change that.
1163. And don't worry about the people.
1164. Worry about what Allah thinks of you.
1165. All right. So, this is uh something uh
1166. that I wanted to share. Bismillah.
  1167. Another question.
1168. >> Can I just throw a question out there?
1169. >> Please. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
  1170. >> Because I was thinking
1171. you know, when Allah tells us about Adam
  1172. uh he forgot
1173. right? And so, the first human being
1174. kind of the the mistake I suppose that
1175. Adam makes is he forgets.
1176. So, this almost tells us something about
1177. our nature that like there's
  1178. we're prone to forgetfulness.
  1179. >> Mhm.
  1180. >> Right?
  1181. >> Mhm.
  1182. >> And we're prone to forgetfulness I think
1183. for a lot of reasons. As I was saying we
1184. have enough, right? And the nefs, you
1185. know, this kind of your your base self,
1186. right? It has its its desires and its
1187. wants, right? And so when Shaitan kind
1188. of wants to trick Adam into going for
1189. the one tree, the one thing that Allah
1190. told him not to go to, right? Like Allah
1191. like you have everything in Jannah, just
  1192. this tree.
1193. And yet Shaitan makes that tree look so
1194. attractive to Adam Alayhis Salaam who
1195. has everything else, right? And and he
1196. says, you know, that there is, you know,
1197. Shajaratul Khuld wa Mulkin La Yablah.
1198. So, should I not, you know, like lead
1199. you to the the tree of kind of eternal
1200. life, right? And Mulkin La Yablah, like,
1201. you know, and dominion that, you know,
1202. is never going to end.
1203. So, we as human beings, we have a nefs,
1204. right? There are sometimes when we are
1205. sometimes led or guided by that nefs
1206. because we have these base desires. Now,
1207. alhamdulillah, Islam, Allah kind of he
1208. guides us in a sense to to the best um
1209. the middle path I suppose uh
  1210. to
1211. uh satisfying I suppose the nefs in in
1212. in pure ways, right? But I think the
1213. story of Adam Alayhis Salaam actually
1214. kind of answers your question, right?
1215. That we're prone to forgetting.
1216. And part of that forgetfulness is really
  1217. related to our desires.
1218. And if we look today, I mean, just look
1219. at advertisements. Like they're all
1220. targeting our base desires, right? And
1221. targeting our base vulnerabilities as
1222. well, right? So, on the one hand it says
1223. like you want this, right? You and, you
1224. know, it'll be some tantalizing ad of
1225. this or that or the other. But it'll
1226. also target the vulnerability. Like
1227. Shihad I was saying is like, "Oh my
1228. goodness, I feel so ugly," right?
1229. Because they put a picture of somebody
  1230. who's like so airbrushed. They're just
1231. like, "But I need to look like that,
  1232. right?" And so,
1233. we're kind of really led to just being,
1234. in a sense, inside ourselves, but the
1235. part of ourselves is like really that
1236. messed part. And that's why dhikr is the
1237. antidote, but it's like such an easy
1238. antidote because it's so easy to forget.
1239. Allah makes it so easy to remember.
1240. Right? And so, it's like when you have
1241. something that is like, "Ah, it's so
1242. easy to be distracted, but la ilaha
  1243. illallah." I just I got distracted,
1244. Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar.
  1245. Right? Cuz it's like it's like there's
1246. always like a lot almost, you know, he
1247. matches that. Yes, it's so easy to
1248. forget, but all you need to do is
1249. remember, right? All you need to do is
1250. remember. And so, Allah, he doesn't make
1251. it kind of easy forget easy to forget,
1252. sorry, and then hard to remember and
1253. then like a barrier to entry.
  1254. It's easy to forget, we're human, we're
1255. weak, you know, subhanallah, like we we
1256. have issues sometimes, right? But it's
1257. like and it's so easy to remember,
1258. right? Allah makes it so easy to
1259. remember because we're prone to this
  1260. forgetfulness.
  1261. Yeah.
1262. >> Barak Allah fik. Masha Allah, beautiful.
  1263. I guess so.
1264. >> And then, is it okay if I, for example,
1265. say if like I have a dua that I want
1266. Allah to answer? And if I sit down and
1267. say, "Oh Allah, I know no way to do like
1268. to do dhikr right now for you, like
1269. istighfar Allah 100 times and
1270. the intention is for you, for example,
1271. to answer this dua." Is that okay or
  1272. >> I didn't understand the question. Can
1273. you repeat it? If you intend
1274. >> I intend to do dhikr right now, like
1275. istighfar Allah like 100 times.
1276. And the intentions of like Allah, please
1277. answer this type this certain dua for
1278. me. Is that okay or
  1279. >> It's um
1280. That's okay. We have the tradition
  1281. called nadhr.
1282. Yeah, Allah, if you let this happen, I
1283. will feed 100 poor people or I will give
1284. sadaqa or I will slaughter a lamb and
1285. feed it to the poor.
  1286. Nadhar is not haram
  1287. in Islam.
  1288. Um and
1289. I guess with that you saying that, Allah
1290. already said that on your behalf in
  1291. Surat Nuh.
1292. So Allah already said what you
  1293. >> [laughter]
  1294. >> what you want. That's one.
  1295. Um and
1296. and it's a I mean as long as you are in
1297. the realm of dua and you're saying, "I
1298. will make this dhikr. I will say
1299. astaghfirullah 100 times. Maybe my dua
1300. will be more likely accepted." I don't
1301. see anything wrong with that. That's
1302. what we say dealing with Allah in
  1303. royalty.
1304. So sometimes some people want to say
  1305. they
1306. Ya Allah, give me a job and that's all.
1307. That's it. Can you say something before
1308. you ask? Can you deal with Allah in
  1309. royalty?
1310. Like when you walk to the king, you say,
1311. "I need a car, king." Like you say,
1312. "Hello, king. How are you, your majesty?
1313. How's it going? How's your kingdom, you
  1314. know?"
1315. You don't just don't ask. So actually
1316. what you said is actually absolutely
1317. good, beautiful, nothing wrong with it.
  1318. >> Maybe I'll I'll add actually a story to
1319. that because it was part of getting
1320. something that you want. Um
1321. when I was living here many many years
  1322. ago, I was doing my master's here. I
1323. remember I had come to San Francisco for
1324. some first aid course that I wanted to
1325. do. And this was And you know, my phone
1326. I still didn't have like a SIM card and
  1327. so I you know, I couldn't you know,
1328. access kind of Wi-Fi. And I This was
1329. before Uber. So you know, I had taken a
1330. cab to where the the first aid course
1331. was. I did it, finished. And it was time
1332. to pray. And I'm thinking, "Should I
1333. pray here? No, no, I'll go to downtown
1334. and then I'll just I'll pray in the
  1335. masjid.
1336. And I came out of the place and I was
1337. trying to look for a cab. And there were
  1338. no cabs at all.
1339. And I was like, I don't even know where
1340. to go. Like left, right, north, south. I
1341. have no idea how to get back to to
  1342. downtown.
1343. And I was walking around like expecting
1344. that a taxi is going to come like
  1345. yellow, yellow, yellow. Like
1346. I need a taxi to come, right? And I kept
1347. calling these taxi companies. They're
1348. like, "Sure, sure, we'll send send
1349. someone in like 10 minutes, 15 minutes."
1350. But nobody was showing up.
1351. And I was like, you know what? This is
  1352. because I didn't pray. I should have
  1353. prayed then and there.
  1354. And I actually I had a, you know, a
1355. sujāda with me and and I found like a
1356. corner and I and I kind of I prayed
1357. there. And I was like,
1358. I really needed a cab to come here. I
1359. don't know how to get out of this place.
1360. I was making du'a and then um
1361. no cab comes, right? And then I'm like,
1362. you know what? Astaghfirullah, I feel
1363. like I must have done something that's
  1364. like blocking my du'a.
1365. And I was like, astaghfirullah,
  1366. astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah,
  1367. astaghfirullah, astaghfirullah.
  1368. And then uh
1369. and you know, as I'm, you know, kind of
  1370. doing this this dhikr,
1371. out of nowhere this cab comes. I'm like,
1372. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. And I was
1373. like, oh, it's one of the cabs that I
1374. called. So I get in and he's like, he
1375. gives me this weird look, but you know,
1376. whatever. I get in the cab. I'm like,
1377. "Oh, are you from one of the, you know,
1378. taxi companies?" He's like, "No,
1379. actually I never come from this area to
  1380. this area, sorry. And
  1381. you're so lucky because there's three
1382. conferences in downtown San Francisco.
1383. So cabs aren't leaving like downtown at
1384. all." I was like, Allahu Akbar, Allahu
1385. Akbar, right? I was like, this is my
1386. astaghfirullah story. So I told one of
1387. one of my friends, who actually said
1388. that in the back, and uh and a couple of
1389. others. And so the sister, you know, a
1390. couple of days later, she comes to me,
1391. she says, "It didn't work."
  1392. >> [laughter]
1393. >> I'm like, "What do you mean it didn't
  1394. work?"
1395. And she goes, "I did what you said. I
1396. was waiting at the bus stop and the bus
  1397. wouldn't come and I didn't want my
1398. friend to come and pick me up. So I was
1399. like, I'm going to do astaghfirullah,
1400. right? Because Jinan said do
1401. astaghfirullah, you know, and then, you
1402. know, if taxi didn't pick you up, right?
1403. So So she said, "It didn't work. I I did
1404. my stuff while and the
1405. bus didn't come and my friend had to
  1406. pick me up.
1407. And I started thinking about that. I
  1408. said, you know, subhanallah,
1409. it's like she was saying there's nothing
1410. wrong with that, but it's also like
  1411. sometimes that car
1412. is we shouldn't also maybe be too
1413. transactional with them, right? Because
1414. the purpose of seeking forgiveness, the
1415. the ultimate aim is to be forgiven,
  1416. right?
1417. Because if I'm just saying words, but I
1418. don't know what they mean here because
1419. the istighfar is they're not symbols,
1420. right? Like you say astaghfirullah and
1421. it's different from la ilaha illallah
1422. because they have two different
  1423. meanings, right?
1424. And so, and I was telling, you know,
1425. that sister, Allah bless her. I was
1426. like, you know, what the bus stopped
1427. coming probably was the answer. You
1428. know, you're making dua for, you know,
1429. the bus to come so your friend wouldn't
1430. be inconvenienced and have to pick you
  1431. up.
1432. But Allah knew that the bus stopped
1433. coming for whatever reason is actually
  1434. better.
1435. And so sometimes when we say, Allah, I'm
1436. going to do this to get this outcome,
1437. right? Sometimes Allah knows that that
1438. outcome is not good for us.
1439. But we still got the benefit of dhikr.
1440. We shouldn't be because sometimes what
1441. happens like, well, I said
1442. astaghfirullah 100 times and Allah
1443. didn't give me what I want, so I'm just
1444. not going to do istighfar anymore cuz,
  1445. you know,
1446. And but it's like, no, you do istighfar
1447. because like you want to be close to
1448. Allah and you actually want to be
1449. forgiven. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
1450. will answer you in the way that he knows
  1451. is best,
1452. right? And so, in my situation it was
1453. finding taxi, right? And the sister's
1454. situation it was actually her friend
1455. picking up because Allah knows that bus
1456. had come. We don't know what Allah We
1457. don't Sometimes we don't know what Allah
1458. saves us from, right? And we think Allah
1459. didn't respond to my dua or, you know,
1460. whatever it is, but it's like, you don't
  1461. know
1462. subhanallah something that was supposed
1463. to come your way that might have been a
1464. negative or even a catastrophic thing,
1465. and Allah actually blocked that from
1466. happening because you remembered him,
1467. right? Because, you know, you were so
1468. steadfast in in his remembrance.
1469. Um and so I that's probably like the
1470. only caveat that like yes, you can make
1471. that and say yes, Y'all help I'm going
1472. to try to do this. Y'all please help me
  1473. to get X or Y or Z. And that's good and
  1474. that increases our worship.
1475. But then we should also have this thing
1476. of I'm going to think well of Allah that
1477. even if I don't get exactly what I want,
1478. it's because Allah knows exactly what I
1479. need. Maybe I want this thing but Allah
  1480. knows what I need.
  1481. >> Inshallah.
1482. If anyone needs to make wudu inshallah,
1483. then you can make wudu.
  1484. If you don't uh
1485. After uh yeah. Yeah. Uh Just uh
  1486. inshallah we'll
  1487. Give me a minute.
1488. Uh coming in spending your evening with
  1489. us. Alhamdulillah. Inshallah we'll
1490. pray in this room um
  1491. and then after that
1492. after that we will uh continue on into
1493. the uh book signing and selling. We'll
1494. have the books here and uh yeah,
1495. inshallah stick around for that and
1496. Jazaak Allahu Khairan. Thank you again.
