Why Tawasaw Exists
According to the Pew Research Center, nearly one in four Americans raised as Muslims no longer identify with the faith in adulthood—and that is likely a conservative estimate. What we witness on the ground is a much higher loss ratio.
For years, our community has relied on traditional lectures and speeches to teach Islam. While these can be valuable tools, they do not fully reflect the Prophetic model of teaching through mentorship, companionship, and lived example. Afterall, the Muslims around the Prophet ﷺ were known as the Sahaba—the companions—because Islam was taught through Suhbah.
At Tawasaw, we are confronting this reality by reviving the Prophetic approach to teaching. Our focus is not simply on transmitting large amounts of knowledge, but on cultivating small circles where faith is experienced and learning is paired with real application and practice.
