Seeking Prophetic Justice | Shaykh Alauddin ElBakri at UC Berkeley
Shaykh Alauddin ElBakri
2 moments mention “Youth”:
- Alhamdulillah for the blessing of
- security,
- for the blessing of peace,
- for the blessing of stability.
- Uh something that our brothers and
- sisters in Gaza are far, far away from
- enjoying.
- They cannot even sit down like that.
- They haven't had a proper salat
- al-Jumu'ah in now almost a year.
- That and a proper They have turned their
- tents into places of memorizing the
- Quran.
- So, the memorization is going. I don't
- know if you've seen the videos of ladies
- while breastfeeding their kids.
- That's a student sitting down with a
- teacher who's um checking her
- memorization.
- And half of war, living in a tent, the
- school is in a tent,
- wife,
- little child, infant, must be in the
- first 2 years.
- And all of that did not stop her from
- memorizing Quran.
- Quite a
- a scene that one might read about in in
- the books in the old times, you know.
- So, alhamdulillah that we It's an honor
- to live at the same time on the same
- planet
- as those people in Gaza. It's really an
- honor. We're witnessing history. We are
- Maybe they will make dua for us and
- Allah will answer their dua.
- I am more
- more you know, more hopeful in their dua
- than our dua
- for them even though we have to make
- dua. May Allah accept our dua. May Allah
- give him give them mercy. May Allah give
- them
- peace, security.
- May Allah give them
- a good economy. May Allah stop this war
- with in a way that he can plan subhanahu
- wa ta'ala. And may Allah help us to help
- them. And may Allah does not count us
- from those who has forsaken them or
- forgot about them or that we will be
- held responsible on the day of judgment
- that we didn't do our best, right? And
- because we can have lectures and
- lectures can be emotional and nice and
- you feel great and high, but at the end
- of the day, you're not dealing with the
- issues of the time. You're not dealing
- with now. And so, let's not I don't
- believe anything can be normal. I try my
- best with every khutbah that I give,
- with every class that I start first by
- talking about the people of Gaza,
- connecting everything with them. Then
- whatever topic we want to talk about, we
- can talk about, but let's not forget
- them. That's the least. The last two
- khutbahs at MCA, I gave a khutbah about
- parenting and relationship between
- parents and children. Looks like doesn't
- have anything to do with Gaza.
- But I don't know if you are watching the
- 1-minute videos. Something that I
- noticed, a 5-year-old is crying about
- his parents, normal.
- A 10-year-old is crying that he lost his
- parents, normal.
- A 15-year-old teenager crying so hard
- that they lost their parents.
- How many teenagers in America cry for
- losing one of their parents?
- At 20 years old, at 25 years old, at 30,
- at 40, at 50 years old crying like a
- 5-year-old because he lost his parents.
- If you don't look beyond the picture,
- there is something that is not
- normal everywhere else. This love
- between parents and children, you know,
- this 12-year-old shaking his dad saying,
- "Baba, Baba,
- I need you to wake me up so that you can
- take me to the masjid on Fajr. Wake up,
- Baba. Who's going to take me to Fajr?"
- Look, this is caught on video.
- So, I said, "What What is it that these
- people have? Why these kids love their
- parents to this level?" Daughters crying
- about their fathers like
- like you've never seen before. Sons
- crying for their mothers and dads. It's
- for young ages normal, but when you see
- a 25-year-old crying like a child, that
- means there was a strong relationship.
- Why don't we have that strong
- relationship? What can we learn from the
- Quran? So, even with a seemingly
- parenting
- and parent-children relationship that
- seemingly have nothing to do with Gaza,
- I still connect it with Gaza. And I want
- you to do that. In every conversation,
- bring your meeting with your friends.
- You're about to eat breakfast. Say, "May
- Allah azza wa jal give similar food and
- better food to the people of Gaza." Amin
- ya rabbal alamin. Allah will reward you
- for that. Allah looks at the body that
- the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam
- made an expectation that we're like one
- body. If one part of the body is
- hurting, the rest of the body is hurting
- and reacting with fever
- and lack of sleep. That's what the
- Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam. Do
- you have fever?
- Like mental fever. Are you lacking sleep
- because of the people of Gaza? It's too
- much to to be now almost a year waiting
- for all of that. So,
- when I talk about the justice of the
- Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam today,
- I'm not talking in a vacuum. I'm talking
- in in reality on the ground. What can we
- learn from him salallahu alayhi
- wasallam? And how can we
- embody that ourselves? Because also to
- stay in touch with reality. One thing is
- happening in in the Muslim world. I I I
- don't know. I call it spiritual
- schizophrenia
- uh in or or schedule is spiritual
- bipolar disorder in which you might have
- two personality. If someone mentally has
- bipolar,
- our Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam
- and the Quran tells us they have no
- blame on them. Take your medication,
- this and that. Uh
- and and and there's no So, that the
- mental issue is excused by the Quran.
- When a person has a serious mental
- sickness or illness or not in control,
- Allah tells the angels not to write the
- deeds anymore. So, they are they're not
- But when you have a spiritual bipolar,
- right? That
- that on one side,
- you know, when when when we look at our
- reality today and and it's like on one
- side,
- we want to
- care about the people of Gaza and about
- Islam and Muslims worldwide, but on the
- other side, we just don't want to you
- know, we don't want to change our lives.
- So, at the end of the day,
- a believer has one face, has one heart,
- one mind. A believer
- seeks to
- seeks to fulfill his purpose and his job
- in this world. So, if I were to start
- and and and and say,
- subhanallah, how can I speak about the
- Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam when
- he is the Prophet and we are no one to
- speak about him.
- Uh it's it's embarrassing, but one can
- start with what our mother Aisha
- radiyallahu ta'ala anha she said about
- the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam,
- his morals, his manners, his character
- was al-Quran al-Kareem.
- His morals, his character was al-Quran
- al-Kareem, right?
- But before I start with that,
- I want to share with you that this sense
- of justice, fairness, doing what is
- right, being fair, being just
- is a character that the Prophet
- salallahu alayhi wasallam had before
- receiving the revelation.
- And it was one of his qualifications
- to receive the revelation. So, we know
- part of the qualification, as-sadiq, the
- truthful.
- Al-amin, the trustworthy. But one of the
- things that we actually don't mention,
- al-adil, the fair and just before
- receiving the revelation. If you want
- someone to lead a nation and moreover to
- be the last prophet and messenger to
- lead humanity, that person has to have a
- very strong sense of fairness and
- justice.
- That is manifested in a saying that the
- Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam said.
- He said, "When I was young
- and Rasulullah salallahu alayhi
- wasallam, we could decipher he was 16,
- 17, 18
- at that time
- or in his early 20s, he I was invited to
- an alliance.
- An alliance that was established, Hilful
- Fudul.
- A group of tribes got together
- and said,
- "Anyone that is oppressed in the city of
- Mecca,
- we want to give them back their rights."
- There is no Islam yet. Revelation didn't
- come yet. A group of tribes, one of the
- tribes is Bani Hashim. One of the tribes
- is Bani Zuhrah. Bani Zuhrah is the tribe
- of the mother of the Prophet salallahu
- alayhi wasallam, Aminah bint Wahb.
- Right? So, they had that very also
- strong sense of justice. Like So,
- Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wasallam,
- you can tell he came from good two
- families, right?
- And and into me and that just a
- footnote,
- make sure inshallah
- that
- as you're growing and inshallah you're
- all going to get married,
- make sure you have a good family with a
- strong sense of goodness, justice. You
- will invite a lot of guests to your
- home. You will give a lot of charity.
- You will make your home a place where
- you host halaqas, knowledge, a house of
- knowledge because guests bring barakah,
- right? And bring knowledge with them.
- Make plans like that because believe it
- or not,
- when you
- whatever you intend right now, Allah
- will give you a spouse that wants to do
- the same thing. And if you and your
- spouse do that, you don't know the
- impact you're going to make for a long
- time, for generations to come.
- Yani, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
- Wasallam, if you read his story
- and you go back into his grandparents,
- both from the father's side and also
- from the mother's side, you will find
- that these people, these families in the
- middle of Jahiliyyah
- drew a different standard for
- themselves. Bani Hashim
- lived on a different standard than the
- rest of Mecca. Even though there is no
- Islam yet. Even though there is but with
- a sense, pure fitra, they set up that
- standard. That affected the Prophet
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Inshallah,
- if Allah gives me life and gives me the
- time, I wanted to make a record, a
- silsila, like a episodes about the
- grandparents of the Prophet Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wasallam.
- And how did he grow up listening to
- these stories? These were the big
- stories of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
- Wasallam when he was a child and that
- had a huge impact on him when he grew
- up.
- Qusai ibn Kilab. Qusai united Quraysh.
- Brought back Quraysh to the Kaaba. And
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- before Islam united Quraysh. Quraysh
- were about to fight one another. Who's
- going to put the black stone? And when
- they saw the Prophet coming, they
- appointed him as a judge and they said
- he's a Sadiq al-Amin. Whatever he says
- we will do. There was a trust in the
- judgment, trust in the fairness.
- Quraysh was not afraid that if they make
- Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam the
- decision maker, who's going to put the
- black stone in its place, that Muhammad
- is going to say Bani Hashim is going to
- put the stone. They didn't fear that. He
- knew he was not going to do that.
- So they put him as a judge because
- there's a strong sense of fairness.
- Second, this
- alliance of the virtuous, the alliance
- Hilful Fudul,
- I want you to hear what the Prophet
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said about it
- after becoming a prophet. He said,
- "When I was in my youth,
- I got invited to participate in Hilful
- Fudul."
- Why that's so unique? Because Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was young. He
- was in his early 20s. So most likely he
- wouldn't be invited. Abu Talib will be
- invited, you know,
- al-Abbas,
- Abu Lahab, but not a young man like
- Rasulullah. But they sensed in him
- strong sense of justice that they
- actually invited him to the meeting.
- Sometimes it's just an honor to attend a
- meeting with the leaders, right? So he
- said, "I was invited to a meeting
- in my youth, in Quraysh Hilful Fudul.
- Wallahi,
- I would not I would rather yani I would
- not
- exchange
- that meeting with the weight of Uhud as
- gold.
- I would not missed that meeting. If
- someone told me, 'Miss the meeting and I
- will give you the weight of Uhud in
- gold,' I would have not spared. I would
- not did the exchange.
- And then listen to the second statement.
- And wallahi,
- if I am invited to this
- alliance today, I will answer."
- Which gives us right now
- that opened a whole huge research for
- our ulama to say, "Okay, if you're a
- Muslim and there is non-Muslims with you
- in the society and they come together
- and they unite over a good cause,
- it is encouraged to you participate. You
- don't say, 'I'm a Muslim, they're
- kuffar, we don't agree on Islam, so I'm
- not going to work with you.' This hadith
- became usul, it became a foundation in
- political participation, social
- participation,
- justice participation that when people,
- even if they're not Muslims, come
- together over an issue and unite over
- justice, you participate.
- This is a big hadith. So what I want to
- tell you, justice and fairness was not
- strange to the DNA of Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Was not
- strange to
- It was in his blood, it was in his
- psyche, it was in his persona,
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, and that was
- one of the reasons why Allah chose him
- also as a not only a prophet and
- messenger but the last prophet and
- messenger. So after receiving the
- revelation, what happened?
- After receiving the revelation, now
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is
- facing persecution in Mecca.
- Right? Facing persecution in Mecca that
- he had to endure for 13 years. What
- happened in the 13 years?
- I just want you to know
- that after Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
- Wasallam declared that I am a prophet, I
- am a messenger and I invite you to
- Allah.
- How long did the Prophet Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wasallam made a private dawah?
- Not secret, it wasn't secret, but it was
- private dawah, one-on-one.
- It was for 3 years.
- Tayyib.
- And then Allah told him, "Get up and
- declare the message." So he got up and
- declared the message. And the first one
- that stood against him
- was his uncle Abu Lahab and he told him,
- "Tabban laka ya Muhammad." And Allah
- revealed "Tabbat yada Abi Lahab wa tab."
- Okay? Now, I want you to count with me.
- 3 years from al-Ba'thah. Now Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is
- 43 years old cuz he received the
- revelation at 40. And I want to share
- something with you. He received the
- revelation at age 40 lunar.
- So he was 39, 38 and a half.
- Yani, young. Yani, in his 30s.
- Look at the maturity. Right? In America,
- they want to dumb you down. "Oh, you're
- a teenager." As if teenagers don't have
- brains. Like you were excused from
- intellect. You're excused from
- logic, right? Subhanallah, by age 39,
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- received the revelation. So 3 years. Now
- he declares the dawah.
- Do you know how long after declaring the
- dawah did Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
- Wasallam tell his ashab, "Go to
- Abyssinia. I cannot protect you anymore.
- They're going to go after you. They're
- going to kill every last one of you and
- I cannot protect you and I don't want
- you to be dead. I want to preserve you.
- I want you to be my backup plan
- just in case something happens to us
- here."
- You know how long it took for Quraysh to
- go from zero to 100?
- 2 years.
- In the fifth year of al-Ba'thah, now
- Rasulullah is not 43, he's 45 lunar
- years.
- 45, he sent them.
- The second time he sent it's not getting
- better,
- he is in the seventh year
- of al-Hijrah, of al-Ba'thah, he sent the
- second uh
- group of Sahabah to Abyssinia. Do you
- know that you know the number of Sahabah
- at that time
- was like 100.
- Do you know 82 of them left to
- Abyssinia?
- Do you know Mecca was left with nobody?
- Rasul Do you know Uthman left with the
- first You know, when you say Uthman,
- rich man from Bani Umayya. Yani, there
- is no reason for Uthman to leave.
- Do you know Abu Bakr as-Siddiq was on
- his way to immigrate to Abyssinia?
- And one of the mushrikin said,
- "Under my protection, no way you leave.
- You're one of the best people in
- Quraysh." So what I'm trying to share
- with you is it was a lot of pressure and
- it was a lot of oppression. And do you
- know what happened from the seventh year
- to the tenth year? 3 years of siege,
- embargo, and sanction.
- Do you know what the people of Gaza are
- going through?
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- went through it.
- Do you know what the Sahabi tells us?
- One of the Sahabah that witnessed the 3
- years of siege, embargo, and sanction.
- Because it wasn't only embargo, it
- wasn't only sanctions, it was a siege.
- Do you know what a siege is? You can't
- leave.
- Nor someone can come from outside to
- you.
- Let me share with you the story. One of
- the Sahabah said, "We were under siege
- for 3 years.
- We used to go a week without eating,
- just drinking water.
- And I used to feel
- the call of nature and that I need to go
- and use bathroom number two. And when I
- used to go and feel that I need to use
- the bathroom, like number two,
- al-gha'it,
- nothing comes out. But yet the body has
- that feeling.
- So nothing comes out. So one day I went
- to the the to use the bathroom.
- And I sat,
- you know, he left his clothes, he
- squatted. So while he was squatting,
- feeling he had something as but nothing
- is coming out, he put his hand, he heard
- like there's something loose. So he
- touched it and it was a piece of skin.
- A piece of a dead goat skin
- was left there. God knows a wolf ate a
- goat and that's what's left. He said, "I
- was the happiest man alive. I took that
- piece, I stopped using the bathroom, put
- it back my clothes and ran home. I
- boiled boiled water and I cleansed it,
- then I boiled water again and I made
- soup and I ate it for dinner."
- That's how bad was the siege, embargo,
- and sanction. 3 years. What happened?
- Look at this zulm. When the people of
- Iraq went through sanctions for 10
- years, you Some of you were not born.
- Because it went from 1991 to the year
- 2000, I guess most of you were not born
- then. Do you know how many people died?
- Do you know how many children died in
- Iraq?
- Just so that you know,
- like I don't understand people. Who
- knows?
- 500,000
- children died because of the lack of
- vaccine from one side and the lack of
- what? Of food from the other side.
- Sisters, brothers,
- I think there's about 100,000 people
- dead after 1 year of bombardment.
- 500,000,
- not adults, not women, children,
- children.
- And when Madeleine Albright, the
- Secretary of State, was asked, and go to
- YouTube and watch that clip, the lady,
- the journalist, is asking her, "Was it
- worth it to put sanctions on Saddam
- Hussein that didn't do anything to
- Saddam Hussein and kill half a million
- children?" She said, "Yes, it was worth
- it."
- Guys, please, this is not
- 200 years ago. I'm talking about the
- year 2000. This interview happened in
- 2003. Maybe some of you was already born
- by then.
- This is not long ago.
- So, this is what we're dealing with,
- injustice. Do you know how many babies
- died from Bani Hashim and from Quraysh
- from the Muslims because they couldn't
- survive? The mother doesn't have a milk
- and the baby died. Who ended up dying
- because of malnutrition after 3 years?
- Abu Talib
- Abu Talib and Khadija radiyallahu ta'ala
- anha.
- The external support of the Prophet
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and the
- internal support. Khadija was 65 years
- old.
- Khadija was the reason why most of
- Muslims and this did not die because of
- that she used to use her tribe cuz
- Khadija bint Khuwaylid
- is from a different tribe than
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
- So, her tribe used to smuggle.
- She used her money and the Muslims and
- Bani Hashim survived because of Khadija.
- She herself was malnutrition. My dear
- brothers and sisters,
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Alihi
- Wasallam, after 3 years, he lost Abu
- Talib, lost Khadija, and it was called
- the year of sadness cuz it was one death
- and after 6 months, one death. So, he
- barely he recovered from the first
- death, he was hit. So, it was called the
- year of sadness.
- And after that, he went to Ta'if and he
- got stoned in Ta'if.
- And after that, he came back to Mecca
- and he got humiliated in Mecca. When Abu
- Talib died, they started spitting on the
- Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
- When he makes sujud, they take the dirt
- and put it on the head of the Prophet
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. When he
- makes sujud, they slaughter a camel for
- the idols, take the intestines of the
- camel,
- which is must be like 200 kilo or
- something, right? Cuz the camel is 1,000
- kilos, 1,000 lb plus, 2,000 lb. Take it,
- put it on the head. It was so heavy,
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- couldn't lift up his head. There was no
- one to help him. Guess who came and
- removed this and slid it off him.
- And started putting the water on his
- head and combing his hair Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wasallam. And she used and she
- told him, "Dear father, they did not
- dare to do this to you when Abu Talib
- was alive." It was Fatima, his daughter,
- the only one because the Arabs at least
- had some
- um
- shame on them, not like the Israeli
- soldiers today.
- They wouldn't attack a woman.
- They would leave her alone. So, she said
- and she and she was combing with a comb
- the clots of blood. You know that the
- intestines? And she was helping her
- father and saying, "My father, they
- didn't dare to do this to you when your
- uncle Abu Talib was alive." Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam looked in her
- face and said, "Ya Fatima, inna Allah
- nasiru abaki."
- Allah will give victory to your father.
- Worry not.
- And he was tense when he said that
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Alihi Wasallam.
- My dear brothers and sisters, if you
- don't know this, if you don't process
- this in your head, then you process the
- Battle of Badr, then you process the
- Battle of Uhud and killing Hamza and
- tearing him apart and taking his liver
- and you don't process the Battle of the
- Ditch.
- You If you don't process that, you will
- not appreciate that when Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Alihi Wasallam went
- to Mecca
- and conquered Mecca, that everybody in
- Mecca was certain, stressed that
- Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- will do something to them. They didn't
- know, but they had hope and fear.
- And when Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa
- Alihi Wasallam said, "Go, for you are
- free." Did not demand their conversion,
- did not force them to convert, did not
- punish them, did not
- take revenge. On the contrary, in the
- next year, when Khutbat Hajjatul Wada'a
- came,
- he said,
- "I I have no revenge. The first revenge
- that I take is the revenge of my uncle
- Al-Harith. And the first riba that I put
- away is the riba of my other uncle
- Al-Abbas." Al-Harith was the son It was
- a cousin of the Prophet Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wasallam.
- Uh
- and he was killed and they were seeking
- revenge to kill the one who killed him.
- He said, "We don't have We have the rule
- of law. We don't have revenge system
- anymore. We have the rule of law." So,
- if you don't go through the pain and you
- scan the seerah, you will not appreciate
- what happened. You will not appreciate
- that you make a treaty.
- There was 14 Jewish tribes in Medina.
- Three out of the 14 broke the treaty.
- The others did not break it. Rasulullah
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did not touch
- them, did not fight them. He just only
- fought the one who broke the treaty and
- almost wiped out Muslims. Muslims built
- the ditch in front.
- Uh and gave their back to the three
- Jewish tribes that they will protect
- them because they had a treaty to
- protect Medina.
- And when these people when these people
- uh broke the treaty and and and and and
- the Muslims like was under the most
- stress because they thought khalas. They
- thought what's happening in Gaza now is
- going to happen to them. They thought
- that the mushrikin are going to get with
- the Jews who
- broke the treaty
- uh and and wipe out all the women and
- children and attack them from the back.
- So, while they are protecting
- Al-Khandaq, the ditch, they were going
- to get attacked from the back. It was
- only by the grace of Allah and the
- courage of Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib,
- the aunt of the Prophet Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wasallam, she started noticing
- that the Jewish is preparing an army
- attacking Medina from the back. What did
- she do? She told them, "It looks like
- we're going to get attacked from the
- back." She made all the women and
- children wear the uh war outfit because
- every warrior had two outfits. You know,
- if one breaks. So, she they wore and
- they stood on the roofs of the buildings
- and they gave the impression that there
- is an army protecting the Medina from
- behind. Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib.
- This Safiyyah, the Jews sent one person
- to check, "Are these women and children
- we cannot see? Or this is the real army
- or pretending army?" So, they sent one
- soldier.
- So, what did she do? She realized where
- he's going. She got into the thing,
- brought a big log
- of like a tree log, right? Uh
- and she waited behind the door. That
- Jewish soldier entered the door and she
- hit him with the log and he dropped dead
- cuz it fell on his back.
- When the Jews saw that, they said,
- "These are soldiers, not women and
- children." One woman saved the Muslims
- from the back, a warrior woman. How many
- times have you heard the story? We don't
- tell our own stories. We know Mulan.
- But Khawlah bint al-Azwar, nobody knows.
- Nusaybah bint Ka'b, she used to fight
- with Khalid ibn al-Walid, she fought the
- Persians and the Romans, nobody knows.
- Safiyyah, Safiyyah is the mother of
- Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. Safiyyah had her
- own method. We don't agree with it
- today, but at that time, you know, they
- grew up in the desert. So, she used to
- beat her son Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam so
- hard that his uncle, his dad's brother,
- his dad, Al-Awwam, died. So, he grew up
- yatim.
- The brother of Al-Awwam, Nawfal. Who's
- the brother of Nawfal? Khuwaylid.
- Khadija bint Khuwaylid, Az-Zubayr is her
- nephew. So, his mother, Safiyyah bint
- Abdul Muttalib, she used to beat him
- after his dad. So, his uncle, his uncle,
- the brother of
- yani the uncle of Khadija, said, "Can
- you stop beating the kid? You beat him
- like you hate him." She said, "No, he
- knows that I love him, but I beat him to
- become a warrior."
- And she started saying poem.
- Very nice poem. So, he said, "Can you
- stop saying poem? I'm going to stop. Can
- you just stop saying your poem? Enough.
- I got the point." Subhanallah, because
- the intention of the mother was good and
- she didn't beat him with hate, but she
- like you are a He grew up to become
- Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, one of the most
- courageous. When you talk about the
- three most courageous people in Arabia,
- you have Sayyidna Ali ibn Abi Talib,
- Khalid ibn al-Walid, and Az-Zubayr ibn
- al-Awwam, the most three courageous
- three soldiers and warriors and knights
- in Mecca. My dear brothers and sisters,
- when you see this
- and you see how Rasulullah Sallallahu
- Alaihi Wa Alihi Wasallam reacted, let me
- share with you two stories
- of two Jewish men came to the Prophet
- Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
- and said to him, one said,
- "I come to you
- because you say you are the messenger of
- God.
- One of your companions took money from
- me and he never returned it."
- So, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
- Wasallam called that companion.
- He said, "Did you take money from him?"
- He said, "Yes." "How much did you take?"
- He said, "Four dirham." He said, "Okay."
- That's exactly what he said. So, he His
- statement is correct. Give him back his
- money. He said, "Ya Rasulullah, I don't
- have money."
- He said, second time, "Give him back his
- money." He said, "Ya Rasulullah, can I
- just wait? I don't have money right now.
- I'll give it back to him." The problem
- is he didn't tell the guy wait.
- He denied him and Rasulullah didn't like
- that. So, he told him for a third time,
- "Give the man back his money." So, he
- took the money and he gave him back his
- money sallallahu alayhi wasallam because
- the Sahaba knows if Rasulullah repeats
- something three times, they will not
- argue with him sallallahu alayhi wa
- alihi wasallam.
- A second incident, a Jewish man came to
- the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam
- and said, "Look." What? He said, "I lost
- my tooth." He said, "Why?" He said,
- "Because one of your followers smacked
- me so hard, he knocked a tooth out." He
- said, "La hawla wala quwwata illa
- billah." "Bring him." So, they brought
- the Sahabi. "Why did you smack the guy?"
- He said, "Ya Rasulullah,
- he swore in the middle of the market, he
- said he said,
- "I swear by Moses, the best of Allah's
- creation,
- and you are still living between us."
- And he's calling Moses the best of
- Allah's creation. You are the best of
- Allah's creation.
- You know, if Rasulullah was a centric,
- you know, self-centered,
- he said Rasulullah got upset,
- but not for what you think. He said,
- "And you smacked the man?
- Don't ever
- prefer me over Moses and don't ever
- prefer one prophet over the other. Allah
- Azzawajal and Rasulullah went on a on a
- on a statement of stating the goodness
- of every prophet and messenger
- sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wasallam so
- that he doesn't create that. These are
- the Jews that broke the treaty. And what
- did Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi
- wasallam do?
- Because after the battle of Khaybar,
- Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam
- did not want a bad blood to stay between
- the Muslims and the Jews. So, what did
- he do? He married Safiyyah.
- You know, at war, they was they used to
- capture the the
- the the warriors and they would capture
- and take them as uh uh
- uh what we call like uh spoils of war.
- Everything the Muslims took from the
- Jewish tribes, they returned and the
- Muslims said when they knew Rasulullah
- married Safiyyah, "Look how Rasulullah
- solved the problem." They said, "These
- are the in-laws of Rasulullah sallallahu
- alayhi wasallam. We cannot We cannot
- have a prisoner that is the in-law of
- Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam."
- So, what when we talk about the
- prophetic justice, the prophetic justice
- uh went uh both ways, whether the one
- who committed the injustice was a Muslim
- or was a non-Muslim. Rasulullah applied
- the same principle. I want to end with
- this.
- Uh this is ayah from the Quran.
- Um this is uh
- uh alhamdulillah Surat An-Nahl.
- And I'm reading from ayah number 89.
- So, Allah Azzawajal starts the ayah by
- saying audhu billahi minash shaytanir
- rajim wa yawma nab'athu fi kulli ummatin
- shahidan alayhim minhum wa sayhim. On
- the day of judgment,
- we will send
- of every ummah of every nation a witness
- from them
- against them.
- Yani, that says if they did good, he
- will say they did good. But Allah will
- not choose a witness
- like let's say this generation.
- Let's say the ummah of Berkeley.
- Allah will bring someone from Berkeley
- that Berkeley used to know and respect
- and understand and and Allah will ask
- him, "What did this nation do?"
- Yani, on the day of judgment, it's a
- court.
- And you know, it's interesting. Allah
- would not take even though Allah knows,
- but Allah as a judge on the day of
- judgment does not use his knowledge as a
- proof.
- He He pulls witnesses.
- Imagine Allah ask Nuh on the day of
- judgment, "Nuh, I sent you as a
- prophet."
- Nuh is standing here, his ummah standing
- there.
- "Did you convey the message?" He said,
- "Ya Allah, 950 years,
- they didn't listen." So, Allah asked the
- people of Nuh, "Did Nuh convey the
- message?" They said, "No, he didn't.
- We He didn't convey your me Ya Allah, we
- don't know." They were They're lying
- thinking maybe they we can get away with
- it on the day of judgment. So, Allah
- asked, "Ya Nuh, do you have witnesses?
- Do you have witnesses? This is a court.
- Where are your witnesses?" He said,
- "Yes, ya Allah, I have witnesses." He
- said, "Who are your witnesses?" He says,
- "The ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi
- wa alihi wasallam." So, we get called to
- the stand to the witnesses stand. And
- Allah asked the ummah of Muhammad, "Do
- you witness that Nuh conveyed the
- message?"
- And the ummah of Muhammad says, "Yes, ya
- Allah, we we witness that Nuh So, Allah
- tells them, "And how do you bear
- witness? Why? You did not witness. You
- did not see it." They said, "Yes, ya
- Allah, we read your book and in your
- book, you said that he conveyed the
- message and you don't lie, ya Allah."
- So, based on your word, we are
- witnesses. So, Allah accept us as
- witnesses for Prophet Nuh alayhi
- wasallam. So, imagine on the day of
- judgment, the divine justice. You know,
- one of the names of Allah is Al-Adl and
- Al-Qist.
- Al-Adl and Al-Muqsit.
- So,
- what's the difference between Al-Adl and
- Al-Qist?
- Both are mentioned in the Quran. Very
- interesting.
- Al-Adl
- is when we talk about justice that
- everyone gets the same.
- Everyone is the same under the law.
- That's justice.
- What is Al-Qist? When you give everyone
- their due
- right.
- That cannot be everyone gets the same.
- So, for example,
- we create a a what do they call
- disability ramp so that the one with a
- wheelchair can get in.
- Isn't that easier?
- Like why Why do I have to go up the
- stairs and he can go on the ramp? Isn't
- that discrimination? Isn't that giving
- him more? Doesn't that cost money? Yes.
- But that's not justice. That's fairness.
- So, there's two names in Arabic and
- they're both the names of Allah, Al-Adl
- and Al-Muqsit. What's the difference?
- The just and the fair. You need them
- both.
- To be just, people think it's justice,
- everyone gets the same. Do you know who
- did that? Communists.
- You know, Marxism, everybody is no
- business owner, no business worker,
- everybody is a worker. They destroyed
- their own country and the country
- collapsed because they mixed between
- justice
- and fairness.
- Leninism
- and Marxism just missed this point and
- Russians masakin, really I feel sorry
- for Russians. They had to suffer for a
- long time. You know, the Russians,
- between the First World War and Second
- World War, 33 million died defending
- their country. Just so that you know,
- you know, people are dying in Gaza, but
- it takes it takes effort. 33 million
- died defending Russia.
- First World War, Second World War. After
- we're done with that, Joseph Stalin came
- to them. He went crazy.
- How many did Joseph Stalin kill? 19
- million. Can someone add 33 + 19?
- 52.
- 52 million people died because of
- because of
- human
- you know, that's what happened. There is
- a book that I advise you all to read.
- This book
- I read this when I was 17.
- I was in Jordan. If you ask me in
- Jordan,
- what's the name of the scholars of
- Jordan when I was 17, I'll name you one
- or two, but I didn't know the names of
- the rest of scholars.
- But I knew the name of this Indian
- scholar
- from India.
- His name is Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi.
- Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi wrote a book that I
- read when I was 17. It affected the rest
- of my life.
- It gave me a world perspective that I
- think each and every one of you need to
- have. He wrote a book. What's the name
- of the book? What did the world lose
- due to the declination declination of
- Muslims?
- When Muslims have no more khilafah and
- they're not in charge anymore, they're
- not leading the world, what did the
- world lose? And he started writing and
- he named First World War, Second World
- War and all the things and the in un
- unfairness and the injustice in every
- country that used to have Islam and now
- it doesn't. And how Muslims give up
- their own faith because my dear brothers
- and sisters,
- what we face today in the world is
- twofold.
- Oppression and plotting from non-Muslims
- to Muslims over Muslims. And then
- oppression and plotting of Muslims on
- Muslims.
- I'll share something with you.
- Historically, never ever did the enemy
- of Muslims was the cause of their defeat
- and finish them. It was never
- The enemies of Muslims never never came
- head to head with us. You can bring the
- Tatar, the Mongolians, we defeated them.
- Only only when the Muslims united
- together and they didn't work against
- each other. The reasons why
- the Mongolians and Genghis Khan was able
- to kill a million people in 1 month
- in Baghdad,
- it's because the some people in Baghdad
- betrayed Baghdad and and opened the
- gates for the Mongolians to come.
- If a Muslim does not betray a Muslim,
- never in a battle a non-Muslim will beat
- a Muslim. Are you with me?
- Zero worry that the enemies of Islam
- will destroy us. They will only be able
- to destroy us if we plot against each
- other and betray one another. That's
- when we're going to pay the price. And
- what you see today, not because someone
- has nuclear bomb and the other doesn't.
- Someone has power and the other doesn't.
- No, no, no. It's because we are
- betraying each other, stabbing each
- other in the back.
- And it's insane. Yeah, I mean, at least
- what we call a
- a light of hope from Bangladesh when the
- students went out and kicked this, you
- know, this corrupt government out of
- position and brought you any a shout out
- of, you know, appreciation to
- Bangladesh, right? You know, subhan
- Allah.
- May Allah subhana wa ta'ala reward these
- students who put their blood and and and
- sweat on the line. But
- that's why when when when we're talking
- about you, we are here in UC Berkeley.
- The world thinks you're the smartest.
- I'm not sure about that, but let's go
- with the world, okay?
- The world think you are the the smartest
- and the greatest. And you're the
- smartest and the greatest Muslims among
- the Muslim community.
- If you understand this historical
- context,
- believe me, it takes only a small number
- of people
- to to change the world. To better or to
- worst.
- 27 people.
- 21 men and six women are the founders
- and the hard working of the Zionist
- movement that worked with Theodor Herzl
- and Chaim Weizmann.
- 27 people. Six women and 21 men.
- They they put their heart into it. They
- put their mind into it. Today is what
- you see. So a small number of people can
- make the world an amazing place like
- Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam
- and the small number of Sahaba, or they
- can make the world a miserable place.
- Like one or two people like Lenin and
- Marx and and then, you know,
- you know, Joseph Stalin, they they they
- they can flip the world to worst or to
- better.
- Allah sends one messenger, he changes
- the world.
- Two messengers, Musa wa Harun.
- One time Allah told us he sent three
- messengers.
- One person can change the world. Two
- people can change the world. Three
- people can change the world if they have
- the right team.
- So at this point we have to be thinking,
- turn this thought of justice into
- organization, action. How can we benefit
- our countries? How can we benefit this
- country and change it to a better place?
- Inspire us to be like his messenger
