1 moment mention “Patience”:

  1. location if
  2. they kick us out like and we go overtime
  3. don't worry we'll walk everyone over to
  4. the scc and we'll continue over there
  5. around there in private areas maybe
  6. outside so no worries about that but
  7. just letting you all know um so we're
  8. gonna go ahead and start it and get
  9. started but first i just wanted to
  10. introduce our speaker once again sure
  11. called buckery joseph lefer for coming
  12. once again all the way from the east
  13. from the south bay um it's a long drive
  14. and we really appreciate your time so
  15. let me just say a few words
  16. so
  17. um at a young age in north africa
  18. okay in north africa
  19. skip it let's skip it okay
  20. and we're partnering with the hostel
  21. which is an organization um whose
  22. mission is to bring muslim youth
  23. together to support each other and
  24. believing in acting upon the quran and
  25. sunnah speaking truth to oneself and
  26. advising each other and serving allah's
  27. creation so
  28. we are partnering with awesome we thank
  29. them so much for their collaboration on
  30. this event and without further ado let's
  31. go ahead and get started
  32. [Applause]
  33. always heartwarming to see that muslims
  34. are interested into learning
  35. of their faith not about their faith but
  36. actually their faith
  37. so that they can turn it into
  38. practice
  39. i'd like to thank the msa uh
  40. which represents all of you
  41. alhamdulillah
  42. for inviting me and uh you know choosing
  43. topics that are very relevant to your um
  44. daily life and to you know age and
  45. experience and you know stage in life
  46. so this is good alhamdulillah
  47. and
  48. i
  49. try my best to
  50. prepare and
  51. put myself in your shoes as i'm
  52. preparing the lecture
  53. not long ago i was also single and uh
  54. and i got married and uh i had to go
  55. through these steps myself you know it's
  56. uh and alhamdulillah
  57. i don't regret it at all alhamdulillah
  58. that we have something called islam
  59. that gives you a room to grow as a human
  60. being to learn
  61. to make mistakes
  62. to learn from your mistakes
  63. but that's not the only way
  64. mistakes are like
  65. minimized in islam because we have
  66. guidance
  67. when in the month end of the month of
  68. rajab
  69. is
  70. event just has you know the
  71. commemoration of the event of the night
  72. journey and the ascension to heaven so
  73. that's one month of rajab is one of the
  74. four forbidden months
  75. that's a whole topic so it's a beautiful
  76. sacred month
  77. and now we're coming into sha'ban and
  78. after shabbat is ramadan and ramadan
  79. allah made it very simple for us why
  80. ramadan is a big deal in the mind of
  81. every muslim it's because the month we
  82. fast them
  83. according to the quran it's a big deal
  84. because it's the month in which the
  85. quran was revealed
  86. so i have another presentation about
  87. ramadan and it's called winning this
  88. ramadan and it's a whole other
  89. presentation
  90. but
  91. we are about to fast in ramadan because
  92. ramadan was the month of the quran in
  93. which the quran was revealed
  94. and allah in one ayah in sign for us
  95. also what is the quran so allah
  96. mentioned three items
  97. it's the month in which the quran was
  98. revealed
  99. what's the quran
  100. 1 pan
  101. guidance to mankind
  102. specific detailed guidance
  103. and a criteria
  104. between right and wrong good and bad
  105. truth and falsehood
  106. harm and benefit
  107. like clear cut
  108. criteria in which that you are not left
  109. with confusion
  110. so these are the three definitions that
  111. allah gave to the quran
  112. after saying this quran was revealed in
  113. the month of ramadan
  114. this is very helpful to us because one
  115. we need guidance think of guidance as
  116. the gps on your phone
  117. you give it you wanna you put the goal
  118. and then it shows you the shortest the
  119. shortest
  120. distance between you and that
  121. destination and it gives you turn by
  122. turn
  123. to the shortest
  124. distance between you and destination
  125. why i keep on emphasizing on the
  126. shortest because in elementary they
  127. taught us a rule
  128. and you all know
  129. the shortest distance between two points
  130. is
  131. a straight line only one remembers
  132. did you grow up in america
  133. yeah okay because most american
  134. three out of four americans when they're
  135. asked does the earth orbit the sun or
  136. the sun orbits the earth they get the
  137. answer wrong
  138. believe it or not
  139. so the idea here is
  140. um
  141. shortest distance between two points is
  142. straight line hence
  143. very interesting
  144. in surat al-fatiha we don't pray we
  145. don't say ahina
  146. because allah knows what you're thinking
  147. about
  148. do you know why people don't follow
  149. faith
  150. the faithful don't follow their faith
  151. because they think of it as the long run
  152. they just want to do things in the
  153. shortest distance
  154. shortcut oh i know islam i love islam
  155. it's beautiful this and this and that
  156. inshallah when i become
  157. 60 i will follow
  158. after 40 i'll go to hajj and start
  159. praying and follow but now i just need
  160. to be fast and quick and you know get
  161. things done fast actually islam is the
  162. shortest distance
  163. hence
  164. the straight path
  165. between you and success in this world
  166. and the hereafter any shorter
  167. and you there will be a damage on
  168. yourself or on others
  169. any longer and there will be a damage
  170. time energy health
  171. mind wasted
  172. because you took the longer route or the
  173. shorter route and you refuse to take the
  174. straight route which is the shortest
  175. distance between two points
  176. this is very relevant to our topic here
  177. because there's so many ways that people
  178. can approach this issue of marriage
  179. after all we live in america
  180. america is a western nation and things
  181. keep on you know happening and evolving
  182. and the new ideas keep on coming and
  183. this and that the society as a whole
  184. changes and sways sometimes to the right
  185. very conservative sometimes to the left
  186. very liberal
  187. and you know it's we are living in the
  188. middle of that and we're human beings
  189. we're getting affected by all of these
  190. ideas around us it's shaping our mind we
  191. we're not living in a predominantly
  192. muslim society that actually
  193. adheres or appreciates the teachings of
  194. the quran
  195. so you and i did not have a chance to
  196. actually grow up
  197. and count on our life experience that we
  198. were most likely to follow the right
  199. thing
  200. most likely we're not going to follow
  201. the right thing unless we make a
  202. conscious decision and we make a choice
  203. so this is very very important that
  204. we are here inshallah for guidance so i
  205. ask you to read with me
  206. in a voice that you can hear yourself
  207. and read it as in with an intention of
  208. dua we're making dua right now how we're
  209. going to read
  210. so you're ready
  211. [Music]
  212. [Music]
  213. me
  214. so by the way this the light totally
  215. went off so if you have the
  216. um
  217. you have the
  218. double a batteries
  219. because then
  220. i would not be screaming
  221. [Music]
  222. okay
  223. so
  224. let's get into the topic
  225. um really quickly
  226. something we're talking about
  227. approaching that let's just say a few
  228. things about marriage in islam
  229. and in life in general
  230. first one
  231. is that the only lifelong relationship
  232. that you actually get to choose
  233. i ask you and you know the answer to
  234. this question already
  235. did you choose your mom
  236. did you choose your dad
  237. did you choose who your brothers would
  238. be your sisters uncles aunts
  239. grandparents grandmothers
  240. nephews nieces these are long life long
  241. relationships
  242. you came to life you had nothing to do
  243. with it and they had nothing to do with
  244. it you just found each other
  245. this is a lifelong relationship
  246. the only lifelong relationship that you
  247. actually get to choose and you have a
  248. say in it and a choice is actually
  249. marriage hence
  250. whenever we decide to get married we
  251. make a big party why because this is
  252. like i chose this right you know when
  253. was the last time you know you went and
  254. threw a big party because you just had a
  255. new sister or a brother right
  256. you're already bothered by the one who
  257. already exists imagine having more yeah
  258. so the idea is you know this is a choice
  259. the only life so think of it this way
  260. lifelong relationship
  261. that you
  262. a choice so we human beings we like to
  263. choose we like the freedom of choice
  264. that allah gave us and we like to
  265. exercise it and when we especially when
  266. it comes about something like this
  267. choosing a wise partner right it's um
  268. it's it's very fascinating every time i
  269. think about that
  270. you know the location of marriage in
  271. between relationships it's the only long
  272. lifelong relationship that you have to
  273. choose it's the only relationship that
  274. brings
  275. causes um and brings and causes your
  276. continuation
  277. every time i think of this i can't i
  278. can't like i can never not be
  279. fascinated
  280. that i'm actually i i'm actually
  281. one cell from my dad
  282. one cell from my mom
  283. and for these two cells to make the
  284. first cell they had to shed half of
  285. their chromosomes are here half of the
  286. chromosomes here and then join together
  287. to make one cell
  288. the cell that is made of two cells
  289. in each and every one of us is literally
  290. half mob half that that's why
  291. my
  292. profound one of the few advices that i
  293. can give you in life and take it and
  294. cherish it never
  295. no matter for what reason
  296. never hate your mother
  297. you are going to end up hating yourself
  298. and you don't know it
  299. because you will hate half of you
  300. and so don't do it what your dad is
  301. and all the things that they did your
  302. dad is the way he is because that's the
  303. way he is
  304. and it's not your job to raise your debt
  305. it's not your job to raise your money so
  306. relax
  307. and enjoy them the way they are
  308. and they cannot be any different way
  309. so if you have hatred or resentment
  310. towards your parents
  311. because they disagree with you or this
  312. or that
  313. let go of it it's not worth it they will
  314. destroy you from inside it will destroy
  315. you on the cellular level
  316. you are going to destroy every half a
  317. cell in your body it's not worth it
  318. nothing
  319. allah in the quran said
  320. that if your parents are careful
  321. literally it's very interesting sentence
  322. if your parents commit jihad
  323. against you to disbelieve in allah
  324. wow
  325. you know the sahaba all of their parents
  326. were non-muslims they you know once the
  327. how you said
  328. his mother told him you leave us down or
  329. i'm gonna stop eating and drinking and
  330. showering till i die and she did it
  331. but at the last moment he went to her
  332. and said do you know the entire city of
  333. mecca knows that no one is nicer to his
  334. mother than me
  335. my mom
  336. i will not leave islam even if you had a
  337. hundred souls and they left one by one
  338. but other than that i'm still your
  339. loving child and i will do whatever you
  340. ask me to do
  341. so this is very fascinating so if your
  342. parents are not muslim and they're
  343. fighting you leave islam leave islam
  344. leave us now
  345. so what did allah say
  346. same sentence
  347. do not obey them but befriend them do
  348. not obey them but befriend them in one
  349. sentence
  350. do not obey them regarding that stuff
  351. that they're asking you to do but
  352. befriend them in this life with goodness
  353. goodness like something good
  354. nice you understand so this is something
  355. very very very important
  356. so this is something relate marriage
  357. you know as we know brings children
  358. children are the secret of our
  359. continuation even on a spiritual level
  360. what did the rasulullah say when you die
  361. all of your actions cease to exist
  362. except if you have a child that makes
  363. dua for you
  364. did not say a boy
  365. because people mix between that meaning
  366. boy and what i mean
  367. like a child just a child you know when
  368. you say in english
  369. man mankind man you don't mean man you
  370. mean man and woman right men and women
  371. but the word sounds like man right so
  372. just exactly the same without it so
  373. the idea is when you are looking at that
  374. you um
  375. when
  376. when you get married
  377. and you have children
  378. and whether they are your children by
  379. the way according to this hadith
  380. biological children or not a child that
  381. you cause that change in their life
  382. what happens subhanallah allah
  383. will reward you and you will be dead in
  384. your grave
  385. and because of your
  386. son
  387. daughter
  388. son son daughter daughter son lord to
  389. the day of judgment till the last one of
  390. them says
  391. you're sitting in your grave having a
  392. good time relaxing and you're receiving
  393. hassan
  394. making more hassan after you die than
  395. you were able to make when you were
  396. alive imagine you're alive right now
  397. right you're supposed to be making a lot
  398. of good things you can make more good
  399. deeds dead than alive in islam that's
  400. why
  401. i mean come on
  402. a religion that gives you a chance to do
  403. more after dying
  404. sign me up
  405. sign me in i want to become a muslim
  406. right
  407. i can make more
  408. yeah go and build a message in a place
  409. where there is no mystery
  410. how many times can you pray over in one
  411. day
  412. one time even if you wanted to pray for
  413. twice and one day it's not allowed in
  414. your soul
  415. really keep up with the fight right
  416. but you are you died and you build the
  417. masjid
  418. you make the school in this masjid in
  419. this school
  420. there
  421. one hundred people pray
  422. you are sitting in your grave
  423. enjoying your view into gentleman and
  424. then you see
  425. us that inshallah number three the only
  426. relationship that fundamentally changes
  427. your life forever
  428. so
  429. subhanallah i i noticed that when uh
  430. when uh you know they do the matrimonial
  431. and there's a ceremony marriage ceremony
  432. so they said do you agree to be husband
  433. and wife in the movies or whatever or in
  434. the church
  435. do you used to be husband and wife in
  436. the good and the bad the ups and downs
  437. until death do us part
  438. yes yes
  439. exchange of house
  440. but this is an amazing thing about islam
  441. if you want death will not do you apart
  442. one time i was saying that a sister came
  443. after
  444. my lecture said
  445. so i'm gonna be stuck with my husband in
  446. general
  447. you don't have to but it's a choice
  448. right
  449. you don't have to
  450. so the idea here is the only
  451. relationship that has funded that
  452. fundamentally changes your life you know
  453. you can have a friend and you know in
  454. high school the dearest friend you think
  455. they'll be for your friends for life but
  456. they're not then you go to college you
  457. forget about them then you've got an
  458. amazing friend in college but then you
  459. know you're like you know friendships
  460. can come and go but marriage is
  461. something that stays and changes you
  462. forever as well as brotherhood and
  463. sisterhood in islam it changes your life
  464. forever
  465. the the reason why i fell in love with
  466. islam when i was 13 is because there
  467. were 10 boys that invited me to a soccer
  468. game soccer to us in the middle east is
  469. like basketball to you
  470. because of that soccer game literally
  471. at age 13 i am standing in front of you
  472. lecturing
  473. so you know subhanallah so brotherhood
  474. and sister within islam is something
  475. that changes your life
  476. okay so uh
  477. yes
  478. one thing about marriage is
  479. um
  480. it's something that you have to do
  481. now you want to approach marriage but
  482. then you have three disadvantages that
  483. you want to kind of
  484. uh
  485. take care of them one another first
  486. the guidance of allah which we said it's
  487. a turn-by-turn guidance because allah
  488. said it said general guidance it tells
  489. you where you need to go then it's a
  490. specific guidance it gives you
  491. turn-by-turn and then it's criterion
  492. between right and wrong good and bad
  493. good and evil falsely true so on the
  494. journey you're not confused so that's
  495. what allah says
  496. what are the rules
  497. that detailed guidance turned by turn
  498. one for and criterion
  499. so
  500. one of the uh one of the biggest things
  501. that people say how can i apply in the
  502. quran in my daily life one of the things
  503. that really the quran gives you
  504. so much light on your blind spot
  505. is actually marriage
  506. so many ayat and people are about
  507. marriage fascinating
  508. there's more ayat in the quran that
  509. talks about marriage
  510. then there is ayat in the quran that
  511. tells you pray and praise god
  512. it's fascinating
  513. because your prayers on zaka are
  514. connected to your marriage one way or
  515. one because management like is something
  516. good and that's why allah gave us a way
  517. out
  518. if the marriage is not working and
  519. you're not
  520. living for a greater goal and purpose
  521. and you start destroying each other and
  522. you start thinking of each other
  523. negatively so much that you cannot live
  524. your life you can get divorced no
  525. problem
  526. marriage and divorce was so easy at the
  527. time of the prophet salvation and there
  528. was no stigma there
  529. like literally when you read the sahaba
  530. um
  531. it was here in uc davis that i gave a
  532. lecture
  533. and there was a sister here
  534. that was not a muslim and she was going
  535. to law school
  536. and then she
  537. then
  538. happened because of a lecture like this
  539. and the students from uc davis drove to
  540. my house in san mateo
  541. every
  542. friday evening 40 students drove from
  543. here they said we want to learn from you
  544. i said you go to knowledge
  545. knowledge doesn't come to you you want
  546. to learn you come to me so force you to
  547. start going there i'm still in touch
  548. with them they're married they have
  549. children
  550. this and that and one of the people who
  551. drove to my house for two years was this
  552. uh
  553. not muslim sister and in the first
  554. lecture that i gave i spoke about
  555. something how muslims like get married
  556. after divorce right away like we it's
  557. not you know life doesn't stop so you
  558. have stories of
  559. muslim women
  560. they got married they went through the
  561. boom next day they got married
  562. or the man that got married divorced
  563. boom next day they got married and that
  564. didn't settle well with the sister very
  565. well but alhamdulillah after two years
  566. she announced her shahada in my house
  567. and she became a you know a big lawyer
  568. after that
  569. i mean i would rather not name her name
  570. but anyway so
  571. three disadvantages that is going on one
  572. lack of quran sunnah which is the
  573. guidance and the embodiment of the
  574. guidance the prophet saw was the
  575. embodiment of that guidance and it's a
  576. beautiful values right
  577. lack of experience
  578. very interesting thing about marriage
  579. why do you need to learn so much about
  580. marriage before you get married is
  581. because
  582. how can you get experience
  583. you can go to college for 40 years now
  584. you have a major in medicine
  585. you either get married you're not
  586. married you can't study it you can't
  587. just study it right so there is no okay
  588. now you're going to go and get married
  589. for four years then you graduate now you
  590. didn't want to get married
  591. there's nothing like that so
  592. the way to do it is um is actually to
  593. prepare yourself and learn and learn and
  594. ask the people who have experience
  595. so one of the things that um
  596. i see that
  597. you you'll probably see we have members
  598. in our community
  599. that are 18 years old
  600. and they got married when they were 20
  601. they've been married for 60 years for
  602. god's sake
  603. and they should know one thing or two
  604. about medicine
  605. and we lecture them about love and they
  606. like shh
  607. you can't even stay six months married
  608. lack of experience so ask people with
  609. experience allah
  610. you know knowledge in this i have
  611. someone that i go back and i ask who's
  612. older than me by 10 15 years and i
  613. always ask him when i have problems
  614. because he went through it already and
  615. you can give me advice you never grow
  616. from learning you always have to be
  617. learning and you always have to have a
  618. teacher this tradition is gone
  619. subhanallah you guys in order to get a
  620. degree you come to ucas
  621. you go to a class even under covet you
  622. had to attend that class on zoom
  623. you had to have a professor even though
  624. you might sometimes find that your
  625. professor is not really teaching much
  626. but the professor is there
  627. because you can't just go
  628. to college that has zero teachers and
  629. you're going to study on your own you
  630. say i graduated myself
  631. that
  632. that logic makes perfect sense to you
  633. interestingly when it comes to learning
  634. stuff turn on the youtube i learned it
  635. why do you apply double standard how
  636. come you get a teacher
  637. and you get a a a mentor and you get and
  638. this even a doctor when he wants to go
  639. and do the residency they have to sit
  640. with the head of the residency with five
  641. students it's like the shaykh and these
  642. five students wherever they go
  643. he goes they go that's what residency is
  644. right
  645. how come we apply that with the secular
  646. knowledge when it comes to the islamic
  647. account i don't need anybody i'll just
  648. watch youtube videos
  649. let me just remind you that random
  650. knowledge
  651. leads to random people
  652. and random people lives in random life
  653. and random life is very not fun to live
  654. it's a very confusing
  655. life
  656. so always find a teacher and learn with
  657. a teacher that's my advice to you
  658. because that will help you with the
  659. experience and ask people who have
  660. experience in the world of knowledge the
  661. effects of the society and the
  662. environment of you
  663. it's very interesting like we can laugh
  664. about that and we it's no problem to
  665. laugh but consider
  666. the stuff that you've been watching
  667. since you were two years old
  668. consider all these cartoons
  669. consider all of these movies
  670. you just have to be pretty
  671. and have the right shoe size
  672. i think you'll get the best groom
  673. you know the story of cinderella snow
  674. white frozen
  675. what is it the common thing is either
  676. long hair right
  677. pretty face or right shoe size
  678. you know
  679. this gets to your head after a while and
  680. then you start going through you know
  681. different measurements the idea of like
  682. okay how do you approach this whole
  683. thing oh it's supposed to be love
  684. and love has to come suddenly
  685. and it has to be romance
  686. and then when you fall in love then
  687. you're going to get married
  688. this stuff
  689. seeps into you like it goes into your
  690. psyche it goes inside you it makes you
  691. like like think that this is the way to
  692. approach marriage and then we always
  693. end up being victims of that
  694. in the united states and specifically in
  695. the state of california out of every
  696. three marriages there's two divorces and
  697. now it's becoming two and a half
  698. divorces statistically
  699. why because it's just the only thing
  700. that you have to do is you have to have
  701. something called they study it here in
  702. uc davis it's called chemistry
  703. so they come to me we want to get
  704. married now today
  705. step by step
  706. we have
  707. and then six months later one year later
  708. we're not meant for each other
  709. what happened to the biology and
  710. geography and chemistry
  711. what happened to that
  712. oh we're not meant for each other we
  713. unclipped
  714. okay
  715. so you know just consider
  716. these things affect us like and i'm not
  717. accusing you
  718. i am as a victim as much as you because
  719. every culture that did not try its best
  720. to follow the quran and sunnah it's a
  721. disadvantaged culture right so
  722. my
  723. disadvantages as someone who grew up in
  724. the middle east and in the arab world is
  725. different than you were disadvantages it
  726. doesn't make anyone better than the
  727. other but the issue is sometimes we
  728. don't even consider
  729. how much brain watching brainwashing
  730. have i went through
  731. how much do i actually you know know and
  732. what i think i know
  733. how much of the stuff that i learned
  734. that i grew up with and to me it's a
  735. fact that actually it's not good and
  736. it's harmful
  737. you need to consider these things and
  738. when you consider them you start you
  739. know learning doubting yourself they say
  740. that is the beginning of the journey of
  741. certainty from doubt to search to
  742. certainty that's the path to uh
  743. so
  744. when we talk about marriage
  745. one thing that i you know because it's
  746. about approaching that
  747. we all of our country i'm sure i'm gonna
  748. say a word and yoga in every language
  749. it's made its way
  750. marriage is christmas
  751. it's just written
  752. yeah
  753. no it's a choice
  754. it's a choice it's not the inevitable
  755. like it's the inevitable that you would
  756. marry this person no it's the truth
  757. so
  758. use all of your resources to make a good
  759. choice and a right choice and a good and
  760. a profound and
  761. well
  762. informed choice
  763. so just
  764. you you know that you know the the from
  765. an islamic perspective we don't have
  766. fatalism islam we don't have that we are
  767. zombies and just god wrote
  768. our life story and we're just acting the
  769. life story that was given to us allah
  770. gave us freedom of choice
  771. people mix and this is a whole lecture
  772. myself simply people mix between allah
  773. knows allah made you do it
  774. einstein solved that problem first
  775. like someone could be on a different
  776. planet looking at your past and you can
  777. be looking at his future
  778. according to einstein time is above
  779. that's the space time continuum
  780. and it's just slice after slice after
  781. slice so the fact that the future
  782. happened according to einstein the
  783. future already happened
  784. right but it's just a matter of which
  785. clock are you ticking at which clock
  786. because time is relevant and the
  787. relativity theory or the theory of
  788. relativity is what is what einstein sold
  789. it scientifically for us that the idea
  790. is allah knows because allah is not
  791. contained by time and space allah knows
  792. does not eat when allah made you do it
  793. you did it it's your choice it's your
  794. freedom of choice but allah knows
  795. because time is not ticking the clock is
  796. not ticking on the wall
  797. your mind cannot process that my mind
  798. cannot process that why because we can
  799. only function this brain can only
  800. function when there is time and space
  801. you take time and space out our brain
  802. freezes that's why right now the recent
  803. thing in the world of you know
  804. astrophysicist physics is that can we
  805. actually ever get it
  806. because if the big bang came from a no
  807. time no space point of view
  808. then
  809. when we ever figure all the laws of
  810. physics or some of the muslim figures we
  811. will never forget because it's outside
  812. the realm of time and space
  813. when our mind can't even function cannot
  814. even get it
  815. so allah knows does not equally allah
  816. made you do it so marriage is not the
  817. inevitable because allah knows yeah
  818. allah knows because to allah there is no
  819. yesterday today or tomorrow past present
  820. or future but
  821. that's from allah's point of view from
  822. your point of view allah gave you an eye
  823. is a
  824. bubble of time and space in which we can
  825. make a choice so
  826. no one was born today or yesterday this
  827. is means nothing to you in english but
  828. it's a saying in palestine
  829. what does that mean
  830. when you are approaching medicine you're
  831. approaching another person one of the
  832. things that we are taught here you just
  833. look at the person
  834. and if the person today is nice
  835. i'm done i'm ready
  836. nobody's born today nobody's born
  837. yesterday
  838. people
  839. their body their mental body is made of
  840. the number of days and experiences they
  841. live to this point if they are 20 years
  842. old they have 20 years of day and night
  843. and each day had an experience and each
  844. day represents a cell in their body not
  845. the physical body but the mental body
  846. and that's why
  847. you need to learn about the person in
  848. front of you
  849. a person could today be very nice
  850. tomorrow
  851. a person could be moody you meet them
  852. today this week is when they are on a
  853. high note next week they're going to go
  854. in the neural notes and on the low note
  855. they know they don't they don't want to
  856. expose that to you so they won't
  857. disappear
  858. until they get kicked in into the high
  859. note again and then you so
  860. really you need to find out about learn
  861. about the person and you know here's
  862. before i get into any more point another
  863. thing that you've been taught and you
  864. keep on saying it part of it is true and
  865. another part is not true
  866. don't be judgmental
  867. true if what you mean by don't be
  868. judgmental is this person is going to
  869. hell this person is going to heaven
  870. then no
  871. don't be judged
  872. if
  873. your judgment is this person is going to
  874. be bad for the rest of his life
  875. this person is going to be good for the
  876. rest of his life he's solid
  877. then that's a bad judgment you don't
  878. know how the person will evolve or
  879. change
  880. but if
  881. judgment means when i come to choose a
  882. friend
  883. much less than a husband or wife
  884. i need to make a judgment when i come to
  885. choose even a friend a brother or sister
  886. i need to evaluate them because as human
  887. beings we are up on each other
  888. the prophets
  889. said you will have the faith of your
  890. friends so let one of you check who's
  891. his friend look at them because you
  892. can't look at yourself look at them and
  893. see what kind of faith they have meaning
  894. how much committed to faith and that's
  895. how much you are committed to faith the
  896. arabs used to say
  897. which the prophet you know we approved
  898. it is that
  899. tell me who your friend is and i will
  900. tell you who you are
  901. i don't need to know who you are just
  902. let me show me your friends and i'm done
  903. so this idea of i do not want to be
  904. judgmental and therefore under this i
  905. don't want to be judgmental i'm about to
  906. make a life long
  907. decision i'm about to make a
  908. life-changing decision i'm going to come
  909. and say oh i don't want to be judgmental
  910. i'm just going to accept whatever the
  911. person
  912. says
  913. i'm an olympic gold swimmer
  914. gold medal swim collapse i'm going to
  915. take it
  916. no change can you show me the middle oh
  917. i have it at home
  918. anyone can claim anything
  919. you need to walk you need to realize
  920. that you know judgment
  921. we make a judgment like you go to the
  922. store oh i got water you go to the store
  923. and there's pepsi
  924. right in america they say they give you
  925. pepsi or coke right you stand in front
  926. of that thing you start you start you
  927. make a choice you make comparison
  928. contracts which one has more which one
  929. has less which one is cheaper which one
  930. is this and this and that and
  931. interestingly in america they give you
  932. pepsi okay what if i don't want pepsi or
  933. coke
  934. very interesting they condition you and
  935. then they tell you you're free to choose
  936. but actually they've already conditioned
  937. you so the idea here is
  938. you need to we use judgment your mind
  939. use judgment
  940. in every every second of the day
  941. so this idea i'm not going to be
  942. judgmental
  943. yes it's not your business to judge
  944. people to say they're a sinner therefore
  945. they're going to be sinners for the rest
  946. of their life they're less than that but
  947. when i'm coming to choose a friend or
  948. choose a brother or sister or choose a
  949. husband or wife
  950. i need to assist i need to analyze i
  951. need to
  952. get the information i need to look at
  953. the big picture i need to do so much
  954. homework because i am deciding do i want
  955. to be the partner of this person for the
  956. rest of my life there is nothing wrong
  957. with that judgment
  958. that's an actually a judgment that you
  959. have to make we made a judgment our
  960. judgment is there is no god but one god
  961. allah this is the judgment
  962. we made that judgment and muhammad is
  963. his prophetic messenger
  964. you make a judgment every day that you
  965. are not going to go out and start
  966. becoming an alcoholic you make a
  967. judgment that you're not gonna start
  968. using drugs you make a judgment that
  969. you're not gonna eat this genetically
  970. modified food and you're gonna eat this
  971. organic food judgment goes why because
  972. one is harmful and one is beneficial
  973. and just like that amongst people there
  974. are people who are harmful and people
  975. who are beneficial so that's very
  976. get to know their family
  977. right
  978. so the family is where this person grew
  979. up
  980. again but yeah why you want me to make
  981. it to look at their family because you
  982. want me to be judgmental based on this
  983. and this and i'm not asking you to make
  984. your final decision and your only
  985. decision based on his family
  986. but you know they say where did this
  987. flower grow except from this bunch like
  988. there is there's a shrub and flowers
  989. grow
  990. where did the flower grow except from
  991. this bunch like where did it grow on
  992. another team it grew here so you need to
  993. look here
  994. if the person you're trying to choose
  995. look where did they grow how did they
  996. grow up
  997. this has nothing to do with being
  998. negatively judgmental you're not going
  999. to pass a judgment on them for life
1000. you're going to just say
  1001. no thank you i don't want a long-term
1002. relationship with you oh yes thank you i
1003. like what i see i got to see your family
1004. i got to see your entire you know this
1005. and i feel you come from an honorable
  1006. family
1007. and then you cannot look for a perfect
1008. every family as they say and the you
1009. know the the dark person you know and
  1010. and
1011. a good person and someone that bothers
1012. the whole family and someone that makes
1013. the whole day you know
1014. people tell me oh we went to the bishop
1015. and i'm not going back there again why
1016. oh people that are judgmental what
1017. happened there was a lady that kept on
1018. bothering me about my hijab and about
  1019. covering my feet
  1020. no sister and brother
1021. you know when you invite all of your
1022. family you know your parents there's
1023. always one uncle they don't want to
  1024. invite you
1025. and there's one aunt that they don't
1026. want to invite because they make the
1027. life and there is one that is so funny
1028. everyone wants to invite anderson so
1029. loving this invite in every family there
1030. is one you don't pass a judgment on the
1031. whole family because there's one person
1032. that went wrong but you need to look the
1033. law of averages this is a good family
1034. good mom and dad good situation
1035. you are protecting yourself you're about
1036. to get involved with this person and
1037. have children and your children will
1038. call his parents my grandpa and grandma
1039. your children will call his brothers my
  1040. uncles or her brothers
1041. my uncles your children will call his
  1042. sisters or her sisters
  1043. my aunts
1044. you need to know who are they calling my
1045. uncle your children are gonna look up to
1046. them you want to marry into an honorable
1047. family in general not a perfect family
1048. because perfect families don't exist nor
1049. we come from perfect families
1050. but there is an average
  1051. you know a medium
1052. something that is good that is very very
1053. important get to know their friends
1054. right and i'm telling you this is like
1055. i'm squeezing for you like uh 25 years
1056. of experience and really counseling
1057. after counseling after counseling after
1058. one case after another seeing the
1059. extremes you know and the law of
1060. averages sometimes it's very easy to
1061. know who a person is by looking at their
1062. friend in college and their friends will
1063. tell you a lot about them because their
1064. friends who lived with them in the same
1065. apartment in the same dorm they will
1066. tell you their strengths and weaknesses
1067. and now you can make a decision okay i
1068. can live with that weakness no problem
1069. so don't take everything that i'm saying
1070. is just being judgmental but remember
1071. marriage is based on you making a
1072. judgment do you want to
1073. be committed to this person for the rest
1074. of your life you really don't want to be
1075. getting married and divorced and married
1076. and divorced even though there is no
  1077. stigma but
  1078. you know
1079. originally we like to think that we're
1080. going to be married for life that's what
  1081. we like to think
1082. so the idea here is get to know their
  1083. friends
1084. what are their bones in life
1085. you need to talk about the goals
1086. right this is very very very important
  1087. and when people talk
1088. right again we get affected by our
1089. surroundings i want to start my company
1090. and i want to make a lot of money and i
1091. want to do this and i want to do that
1092. good luck you're not going to see him
1093. he's going to be working 24 hours
1094. you're going to have probably a honey
1095. wait no honeymoon you know just one week
  1096. not month
  1097. so and you're done
  1098. so and then look
1099. what do they say when they say why why
1100. faith is very important we will talk
  1101. about that because
1102. you know what does it mean to be
  1103. faithful
1104. people think i know what you think you
1105. think i say find a good muslim being
1106. someone who prays five times a day and
1107. faster than ramadan and give charity and
  1108. probably went to heaven
1109. that's the abcd it's like me telling you
1110. please if you find a husband and wife
1111. make sure they know how to read i mean
1112. come on i'm not gonna say that this is
  1113. the abc
1114. having faith how do you know a person
1115. has a faith is when they are ready to
1116. sacrifice to the others to give to the
  1117. others
  1118. they're selfless
1119. that's someone you want to marry
1120. because what i see today is like this
1121. guy has a picture it is
1122. i'm gonna go to get this truck
1123. buy this car and then i'm gonna get me
1124. this woman and it's all gonna fit in a
1125. nice picture we're gonna take that
1126. selfie picture and i'm gonna send it to
1127. my friends and i'm gonna leave it i'm
  1128. killing it
  1129. i'm living here
  1130. check me out
  1131. look at me
1132. and nobody says this is a lot
1133. the whole thing falls apart right so i
1134. feel like i feel like it's a cut and
1135. base like i have this is why i hear
1136. people they don't hear themselves and i
1137. advise them they come and they say i
1138. have this and i have that and i listen
  1139. i'm just missing cut
  1140. paste
1141. i'm missing this girl or the girl is i
1142. have this and i have this i'm just
1143. missing a guy a cut and paste you want
1144. to make sure that you find someone that
1145. fits in your picture did you ever think
1146. do you fit in their picture
1147. even because when you don't have faith
  1148. you become selfish
1149. the worst thing you can do for yourself
1150. in your life is to marry a selfish
  1151. person
  1152. faith
1153. is built on sacrifice built on zakah
1154. built on giving fasting we're supposed
1155. to fast to feel the pension so that we
  1156. can get more
1157. our entire faith allah tells us you're
1158. here to serve humanity you're here to
  1159. serve allah's creation and that's your
1160. test in life and that's how you get to
  1161. go to jannah
1162. so when you when when you hear someone
1163. says find a good muslim fighter
1164. it's not just like praying five times
  1165. that's the abc that's a given we're not
  1166. gonna talk about that
1167. but we will talk about
1168. do they live for a greater purpose do
  1169. they volunteer
1170. when you hear them talking do you hear
1171. them talking oh i had to run the other
1172. day and i had to go to my mom and dad
1173. and help them you know shop
1174. or i had to go oh my god my mom had a
1175. doctor appointment and i had to go and
  1176. help her out
1177. listen carefully these are hands if a
1178. person doesn't have a time for his own
1179. mom and dad you think he's gonna have
  1180. time for you
1181. one year will go by and he's not gonna
1182. have time for you if the one who brought
1183. him to life said him raised him did not
1184. sleep next to his bed did everything for
1185. him he could careless doesn't have time
1186. i'm just busy with my individual success
  1187. that's what capitalism does
  1188. individualism
1189. materialism that leads to deep
  1190. depression
1191. because the human is not allah did not
1192. create us like that just money money
  1193. money
1194. what are you going to do with mutual you
1195. want relationships you want love
1196. every human being wakes up every morning
1197. in need of two things love and respect
1198. you need to give them and receive them
  1199. otherwise you become psychologically
  1200. disturbed
1201. and these are the foundations of
1202. marriage respect first and love that is
  1203. built on respect
  1204. each human
1205. their emotional body needs these two
  1206. every day
1207. evaluate their faith and character this
1208. is very important evaluate their faith
1209. and character and again you think of
1210. that oh being judgmental no we're not
1211. talking about being judgmental again
  1212. salah is a commitment
1213. the one who prays five times a day for
1214. life is good with commitment you want to
1215. marry want someone good with commitment
1216. someone cannot even keep their prayers
1217. cannot keep their fasting when they on
1218. when they off with god
1219. with you what they're gonna do
1220. so you need to check yourself out maybe
1221. i'm talking about you i'm not talking
1222. about the other person so you need to go
1223. and get because you all know marriage is
  1224. a commitment
1225. how how do you get to the commitment
1226. part where is the training for
1227. commitment where is the training for
1228. consistency and persistency it's in
  1229. salon
1230. salah makes you committed like dead or
1231. alive you're gonna wake up even like
1232. dead sleep you're gonna wake up you're
  1233. gonna make
  1234. and you're gonna pray
1235. luckily you don't live in a muslim
1236. country where you do have to go and pray
1237. in the messy you just pray next to the
  1238. bed
  1239. once you see salam
1240. you turn around and you fall asleep
  1241. again right
1242. you can do that but you're going to wake
1243. up and you're going to pray
1244. you're not going to let go of that
  1245. because that's commitment you're going
  1246. to fast
  1247. because that's commitment you're going
1248. to give charity and zakah even when you
1249. don't have money to give charity because
  1250. that's a commitment and that's
1251. selflessness and that makes you good and
1252. pure and and lovely like it makes you a
1253. good light will shine through you
1254. so the idea here was when you look at
1255. faith you know what allah says
1256. and they advise each other to stick to
1257. the truth consistency in following the
1258. truth what their was always solved and
1259. they asked themselves to have to be
1260. consistent with and patient patient
1261. please hold on to your faith hold on to
1262. your faith be consistent it's another
1263. day it's a good day when you pray five
  1264. times a day it's a good day when you're
1265. fast it's a good if allah give you an
1266. excuse because you're traveling or
1267. you're going through your period or
  1268. whatever
1269. that's part of the commitment when allah
1270. gives us a break allah gives us a break
1271. we take it and we say
  1272. no
  1273. so this is
1274. faith you need to look at faith with the
  1275. bigger picture here
1276. we're not again talking about just pray
1277. five times a day and this and that
  1278. and again i'm gonna go and i i'm i
1279. really have so much love and respect to
1280. uh the sisters who wear hijab
1281. and to the brothers who wear a kofi and
1282. a beard but is your d in the piece of
1283. scarf or in the hair
1284. you know that you know what's the
1285. easiest thing to do in life
  1286. not to shave
1287. and it will grow by itself
  1288. zero effort
1289. so do someone have a
1290. if she has a scarf on her head that's it
1291. no but that's part of his stuff i love
1292. the beard and i love to see our brothers
  1293. wearing a beard
  1294. this
1295. of all believing women from hawaii the
  1296. first woman until today
1297. is the head scarf and the modest
  1298. dressing
1299. that is one of the things but that's not
  1300. the only thing
1301. that's just one of the things so we need
1302. to as they say look beyond the beard and
  1303. look beyond the veil
1304. to the person who's inside that beard
1305. and inside that veil inside that that
1306. this it's not the only thing it's just
1307. another thing that we add to the list
1308. that i'm doing now right so this is very
1309. important because i'm going to tell you
1310. something you can find someone
1311. also this is the advice of the prophet
  1312. the second word character
1313. someone can be praying five times a day
1314. and fascinating ramadan but their
  1315. character they're very obnoxious
1316. you can't live with them one day
1317. but god bless them with their lord
1318. they're amazing but they need to work on
1319. their personality so it fascinates me
1320. that our dear beloved prophet salallahu
  1321. says what
  1322. you need to
1323. faith and character not faith alone
1324. you're going to live with the other
  1325. person's character
1326. if constantly his character is to
1327. ridicule mock ready you will make fun of
1328. me you're going to live with someone
1329. who's ridiculing you and mocking you and
1330. making fun of you for the rest of your
1331. life that's not someone you want to live
  1332. with
1333. interestingly recently like you know
1334. what happens is if someone is funny and
1335. they joke all the time joking all the
1336. time and they can't have a serious
1337. moment they become popular they become
1338. known but you need really in life you
1339. need to joke and laugh and have time and
1340. you need to have seriousness there's
1341. moments the only thing you can do is cry
1342. when someone comes to you and says my
1343. mom passed away what do you do
  1344. you cry you're crying
  1345. you don't laugh
1346. laughing is not for everything
1347. sometimes the most sincere thing that we
1348. can experience it's actually sadness
1349. sadness grounds you sadness you know
  1350. makes you you know
  1351. so
1352. i am one of the people that think that
1353. you know twice like two weeks a year if
1354. you get depressed it's good for you
1355. like it it anchors you it makes you
1356. heavy strong anchored you know so you
1357. know let's not give depression a bad
1358. name you know depression that is
1359. deep depression may allah save us all
1360. from it and if we are in it may allah
1361. take us out of it but you know not not
1362. any depression is a bad decision i'm
1363. depressed about the state of muslims
  1364. and i believe that that's a good
  1365. character
1366. i have to be and that depression leads
  1367. me to action so
1368. sacrifice and giving i talked about that
1369. faith is about giving giving sacrifice
1370. you want to have a selfless spouse you
1371. don't want to have a selfish spouse you
1372. know it's very interesting in islam
  1373. the way
1374. to selfishness is selflessness how you
  1375. become selfish in islam
1376. is when you give you give you give you
  1377. so happy
1378. the selfish person what did he want why
1379. did he not give why did she not give
1380. because she wanted to save it for
1381. herself or she can be happy he can be
  1382. happy
  1383. but actually
  1384. selflessness
1385. reached to the goal that selfish people
1386. use to reach to the same goal they don't
1387. preach and the selfless person religious
1388. which is happiness satisfaction deep
1389. sense of peace and happiness that cannot
  1390. be described with words
1391. so the best way to selfishness is
  1392. selflessness
1393. give give here so it's a big item
1394. consistency and ability to change
1395. so you want someone who's consistent and
1396. you want someone ability to change when
1397. you're going through the getting to know
1398. the person do they accept advice can
1399. they take an advice or anyone that gives
1400. them advice that's it you're not my
1401. friend you're judgmental you stepped on
1402. my jokes is there always who do you
1403. think you are you think you're better
  1404. than me
1405. again like i i was when i was sitting
  1406. down and saying like
1407. what do i think that
1408. one concept that we need to revive in
  1409. the um
1410. so the idea of tawasa is the waso by the
1411. way plural verb in the past tense past
1412. continuous terms so that means a group
1413. of people that advise one another the
  1414. prophet
1415. salallahu made of two words
1416. is one of the most profound
  1417. is advice
  1418. it's a islam is a communal faith we're
1419. supposed to help one another the prophet
  1420. saw ourselves
1421. the believer is the mirror of the
  1422. believer
  1423. so we have to
  1424. what
1425. be manners for one another advise one
1426. another so if someone cannot take advice
1427. how in the world you're going to live
1428. with them for the rest of their life
1429. they cannot take any questions any
  1430. advice is an insult
  1431. please
1432. can you not leave your clothes on the
  1433. bathroom floor
  1434. basketball
1435. very very simple but when a person never
1436. got used to taking an advice or take a
1437. resistance anything will become an
1438. insult you cannot be that sensitive in
1439. life life will not move on if you are
1440. that sensitive you really have to take
1441. it to the getting of soul right
1442. you should be so comfortable that when
1443. someone says you know um
1444. something that you actually can joke
1445. about and say yeah i actually do more
  1446. than that you've seen nothing that's
1447. when you feel that you can take an
1448. advice you can take criticism how in the
1449. world are we gonna grow
1450. and you know america america is
  1451. established on criticism
  1452. like you know this
1453. like this academic medium how do you
1454. come with with research so when someone
  1455. writes a paper
1456. about you know modifying a
  1457. rice grain
1458. so another person cannot write another
1459. paper criticizing the other people yes
1460. they can that's how you improve as a
  1461. nation criticism criticism criticism
  1462. criticism but it's constructive
1463. criticism and not destructive criticism
1464. so that's something that you want to
1465. find in a person ask yourself can i take
1466. an advice if you can't take an advice
1467. and any advice is an insult you're not
1468. ready for marriage wait until you mature
1469. maturity is a big thing in marriage
  1470. right so
1471. now we come to the fun part the idea of
  1472. the
  1473. of love
  1474. okay
  1475. any questions so far
1476. we're about to end here in java so
1477. how much time do i have comparing to
  1478. when we started
1479. we're just talking about that
1480. we have the room until nine but go ahead
  1481. and just
  1482. take your time maybe until 9 15 9 20 and
1483. then hopefully this one and then we have
1484. to move to another morning
  1485. all right
1486. look everything is about love in america
1487. and the only way that you get to
  1488. marriage is true love
1489. obviously i am telling you now loud and
1490. clear you want to marry someone that you
  1491. love
  1492. for sure
1493. you really don't want to marry someone
1494. that you hate and you really don't want
1495. to make someone that does not move in
1496. you anything any emotions i'm not saying
1497. but let's look at love in a different
  1498. way number one
1499. love is a very small emotion and could
1500. be the strongest spiritual experience
1501. what can we offer a lot more than love
1502. how much does allah talk about the love
1503. between him and the believers
1504. so we have to take this word love and we
1505. have to put it back where it belongs
1506. because i'll show you what happened to
  1507. the word love
  1508. love
1509. is a very strong emotional
  1510. very strong emotion
  1511. and
1512. it's a and could be the strongest
1513. spiritual experience that we could love
1514. has nothing to do with physical
1515. attraction this is what we have done in
1516. the modern context of the word love
1517. oh they went and made love
  1518. all of a sudden
1519. the word love that has never been used
1520. in the history of mankind and its
  1521. literature
1522. has never been used to describe the
1523. physical act that takes between a man
1524. and a woman now it was taken from that
  1525. most
  1526. strongest emotion the most
1527. strongest connection you can have with
1528. another person emotional and spiritual
1529. connection and they downsized into one
  1530. to physical
1531. how how in the world can i take the word
1532. love and make it about the the
1533. animalistic act that is part of our life
1534. right how can i downsize it so i love my
  1535. mother
  1536. i love my father
  1537. i love my sister
1538. i love my aunt i love my niece i love
1539. so how in the world do i use that word
  1540. right now
1541. when it has been so downgraded and once
  1542. you downgrade it
1543. after you downgrade it you build an
1544. argument on it and the argument sounds
1545. very very convincing but you really have
1546. to be smart so what does the argument
1547. say why shall you judge why shall you be
1548. judged by whom you love
1549. who said that you should ever be judged
  1550. by whom
1551. but what do you mean by the word love
1552. here by whom you love is by whom you're
1553. having the physical act or by whom you
1554. love by whom you love emotion
1555. because i'll tell you there is no
  1556. culture on the planet
1557. that has so much love going between men
1558. and men and women and women than the
  1559. muslim culture
1560. we hold hands we hug and we kiss and we
1561. you know we roommates and we cook for
1562. each other we visit each other in the
1563. hospital and we committed for life
  1564. and
1565. more than that we are encouraged it's
1566. actually considered an act of worship oh
1567. my god the man came to the bottom
  1568. i love him
1569. did you did you tell him
  1570. he said
1571. because the arabs were not used to that
1572. culture no man tells another man i love
1573. you the prophet said to him go and tell
1574. him that you love him
1575. so the man is like oh my god why did i
1576. bring that on myself i cannot disobey
1577. the prophet right now i have to wad
  1578. i love you man
  1579. right
1580. i love you for the sake of allah you
  1581. understand
  1582. that was
1583. right you know the the islam changed the
1584. arabian culture itself like for example
1585. the arabs would never put men and women
1586. in one building with no barrier in
1587. between that was the message of the
  1588. prophet
1589. do you know how many people converted in
1590. medina just to go to the masjid
1591. do you know what these the last they
1592. will go to the last line of men this is
1593. new muslims and then they became the
  1594. best muslims
1595. they go to the last line of men and
1596. women will go to the first line of women
1597. and they'll be like a report checking
  1598. each other out
  1599. wow
  1600. we don't have that
1601. they just only families they are
1602. chivalry don't look at my wife to look
1603. at my husband so they're all separated
1604. so when islam brought them in the masjid
1605. in medina oh my god do you know how many
1606. sahaba told their wives don't go to the
  1607. messenger
1608. and the wives had to go and complain to
1609. the prophet and the prophet had to go
1610. and say do not stop your wife from
  1611. coming to the ministry
1612. so actually islam brought liberalism to
1613. the arabian culture but subhanallah with
  1614. that
  1615. dressing well
1616. and allah said if you wanna if a man and
1617. woman should be talking about something
1618. they should talk about something
  1619. honorable
1620. if they are going to talk about another
1621. conversation like personal i'm talking
1622. about you and you're talking about me
1623. you have to make your intentions
1624. declared before that that we are
1625. considering each other for marriage
1626. that's why i'm talking about you and
1627. we're talking about me it has to be
1628. clear but just flirting around and
1629. playing with people's emotions is not
1630. something we do in islam
1631. but islam wanted men and women to be in
1632. one group praying to allah together with
  1633. no wall or barrier
1634. because allah wants us to see each other
1635. and then maybe when we go to the masjid
1636. together this and we see and we get to
1637. know oversaw the messenger then we start
1638. from there we get married how do you
1639. think the sahaba god made it they saw
1640. each other in the midst
1641. so allah opened that room and space for
  1642. interaction honorably honorably not
1643. dishonorably and as we would see there's
  1644. actually
1645. most muslims don't know this even the
1646. adults so don't feel that
1647. do you know there's one ayah in the
1648. quran that says do not
  1649. but do not have
  1650. boyfriends and lovers
1651. and there's another ayah that says but
  1652. do not have
  1653. girlfriends and lovers
1654. do you know that in the quran says you
  1655. can't have a boyfriend
1656. it's not like we are imagining this
  1657. stuff
1658. because there is not we are just friends
1659. you know you can go to ted talk and just
1660. put we are just friends and there is a
1661. non-muslim lady that explains that
  1662. psychologically statistically medically
1663. psychologically physically there's no we
1664. are just friends it never ends we're
  1665. just friends
1666. and that's not even a muslim who did a
  1667. research anyway so
1668. let's restore the word love to where it
  1669. belongs it's a very beautiful emotion
  1670. that we
1671. can connect to the deepest level with
1672. another person it could be my mom my dad
1673. that could be my husband my wife but
1674. that has nothing to do
1675. with a physical attraction today
  1676. love
1677. and marriage is all about what physical
  1678. attraction no that's not what that's
1679. physical attraction and that's fine too
1680. and that's part of life but that's not
  1681. called love
1682. and you shall not make a decision based
1683. on solely physical injection as the
  1684. prophet saw
1685. love is an emotion we don't make a
  1686. decision based on emotions
1687. allah gave us a mind for the reason we
1688. need to use our minds emotions we use
1689. them to connect with each other and
  1690. connect with allah's creation we don't
1691. make a decision based on the world
1692. you make me mad i'm i hate you today i
  1693. don't make a decision based on i hate
  1694. you i don't make a decision based on i
  1695. love you i don't make a decision
  1696. basically you're bothering me i'm
1697. irritated i'm annoyed by you we don't
1698. make decisions these aren't emotions we
1699. enjoy them we because one day we're
1700. happy when they were sad when they were
1701. out but we don't make decisions these
1702. are this is these emotions are what
  1703. makes us human
1704. so we enjoy them but we don't make
1705. decisions based on them and that's a
1706. huge difference right love is not enough
1707. verify first and love second this is the
  1708. whole idea you know
  1709. it's like the movies oh he didn't wasn't
1710. thinking about her she wasn't thinking
1711. about him but they were walking in the
1712. school and they looked at each other and
1713. then the musical background was oh
1714. chemistry class and then we're going to
  1715. get married
  1716. that's not that's not
1717. how it goes it's actually it's you know
1718. you don't make a decision based on that
1719. you need to verify first
1720. and then you go and
1721. and verify means all the steps that we
1722. mentioned before ask about the family
1723. ask about this and ask the people who
  1724. have knowledge um
  1725. is two types
1726. and that's really fascinating because
1727. allah mentions that in the quran the
1728. love of giving and the love of taking
1729. so this is how it goes in in our
  1730. surrounding
1731. if you take me out to the movies oh i
  1732. like you
1733. you take me out to dinner after the
  1734. movies
1735. oh my god if you bring flowers to the
  1736. dinner
1737. you bring me a gift i love you
1738. and then sometimes we're very honest
1739. with each other and we say
1740. i love the way he makes me feel
1741. i love the way she makes me feel
1742. that sounds good but do you know how
  1743. dangerous is that
1744. because what happens when he does not
1745. make you feel that way
1746. if you take me out to the movies i love
1747. you take me up to dinner i love you
1748. bring me flowers i love you bring me
1749. kids i love you too i love you make me
  1750. laugh i love you
1751. but if he doesn't do any of it
1752. one day one week one month
1753. what i found today after deep analysis
1754. is that when people in america today
1755. and not everyone obviously i'm just
1756. saying in general when someone says i
1757. love you they actually mean they don't
1758. know what they actually mean i love me
1759. they don't need i love you i love you
1760. means this i looked at you i evaluated
  1761. you i saw a driven person
1762. driven in their education driven in
1763. their businesses driven in for their
1764. umla driven for sacrifice driven for
  1765. giving
1766. driven by how they like how how you
  1767. treat your parents
1768. how you treat your brothers and sisters
1769. how you treat your neighbors how you
1770. treat your extended family how you treat
1771. your friends how you always there for
1772. others you you i evaluated and after i
1773. looked at everything i love you
1774. just you whether i'm gonna get married
1775. to you or not get married to you i love
  1776. you
  1777. that's i love you
1778. and that has nothing to do with how you
  1779. make me feel
1780. you need to differentiate between i love
1781. you and i love me
1782. we all love me there's no problem right
1783. but you need to differentiate between oh
1784. i love the way he makes me feel oh
1785. and it's bound to happen you know it's
1786. not only bound that he's not gonna make
1787. you feel happy one day it's bound that
1788. you're gonna fight with each other
1789. and that day you're gonna hate his guts
1790. but we don't build relationship on today
1791. we fall so we love others no no i love
  1792. you
  1793. despite our relationship
1794. that will keep the relationship growing
1795. and growing and growing because like i
1796. admire you i love you means i admire you
  1797. i love you means i love
1798. what you stand for right i love what you
  1799. stand for
  1800. so the idea is
1801. what do you stand for
1802. do you love what you stand for
  1803. how active are you
1804. masha'allah the sister was walking me
1805. and she said that you have a political
  1806. committee for yemen
1807. and you have a you have a
1808. you know another committee for serving
1809. the students and you have a committee
1810. for making these lectures masha'allah
1811. amazing may allah give you one may allah
1812. give you the best may allah give you
1813. more ability to you know
1814. to give and and and be there because
1815. that's something admirable i tell all of
1816. you i love you in the sake of allah in
1817. the name of allah for the sake of allah
1818. because that's something very beautiful
1819. for you to even show up tonight i want
1820. to learn about your name you know
1821. whether you want to get married soon or
1822. not that's a different issue but the
1823. idea that you wanted that you want to
1824. give that you are there for each other
1825. that you want to know one another that
1826. you want to serve one another you want
1827. to be there this is honorable this is
1828. something that you should love about
  1829. another person
  1830. now
1831. just so that you know like when we talk
1832. about the human this is this is an
1833. eight-week sports that i hit like the
1834. seven-layer burrito that we have you
1835. know the seven layer that we made
1836. is the spokesperson of the body that
  1837. represents your uh
  1838. represents your
  1839. needs and wants
  1840. desires
  1841. desires are ones
  1842. sleeping eating
  1843. [Music]
1844. you know drinking is a need so your next
1845. is responsible for your needs and wants
1846. and desires right so there's that part
1847. of you that we call next right then the
1848. other part that we call foreign
1849. in the modern arabic language and in the
1850. modern even urdu i think
1851. in some other languages the word
1852. means heart i love you with all of my
1853. heart interestingly every time the word
1854. mentioned in the quran it means
  1855. the
1856. mental heart the deep mind
  1857. it never means
1858. so allah says the deep understanding in
  1859. the human habits
1860. now people when they have time says oh
1861. that's where the love and the emotions
1862. no that's in the quran
1863. when she when she put him in the
1864. and she when she went to pick him up she
1865. couldn't find him allah said she woke up
1866. with an empty heart here life is
1867. shredded apart with her heart is empty
1868. she woke up with an empty heart so which
1869. means where the emotions happen
  1870. right so
  1871. also
1872. allah subhanahu wa in the quran uses the
  1873. word
1874. which is like you can have to think
1875. about like the ram and the hard drive
1876. the frontal processor front load
1877. processor versus the back in the
1878. processor the deep consciousness in the
  1879. pipe versus the frontal
1880. consciousness which in the mind and the
1881. mind itself has different centers
1882. so allah jesus in the quran i gave you
  1883. hearts
  1884. hearts
1885. where if you study the brain anatomy
1886. today and how doctors talk about it the
1887. the mind is divided into like areas in
1888. each area is responsible each area is a
1889. heart in itself a center in itself right
1890. so it's not only talking about
1891. the heart that is pumping in the in the
1892. chest then you have your room and then
1893. you have your death why did i bring this
  1894. in this presentation
1895. for you who are good at math
1896. what is the percentage of the body
1897. comparing to the rest give me uh
  1898. 20
1899. they are not five if they're five they
1900. would have been twenty percent they're
1901. not six they're seven so what is the
  1902. percentage
  1903. fourteen percent
1904. so this is just consider this this is
1905. how important it is to learn islam
1906. fourteen percent of you we can see you
1907. can see i can see you can see yourself
  1908. and you can see
  1909. 86
  1910. is in the dark
1911. and that's why we need allah and islam
1912. to tell us about that which is in the
1913. darkness we have no means of knowing
  1914. what it is
1915. if it wasn't for the book of allah we
  1916. didn't even know
1917. i mean the human psychology and this and
1918. this and the spirit and they're not and
1919. the metaphysics and they're just
  1920. confused
  1921. but in islam
1922. clear one two three four five six seven
1923. seven skies seven allah seven say seven
1924. layers of view it's all back to back
1925. right so when we're looking here
1926. what's happening today the judgment is
1927. made according to the hadith about these
  1928. four you know
1929. men desire women and women desire men
  1930. based
1931. on these four number one physical
  1932. attraction appearance
1933. 14 of the person in front of you that's
1934. all what you're looking at
1935. and most of us make decision solely
1936. based on that when we are way much more
1937. than that number two financial status
  1938. rich or not rich
1939. number three family status a number four
1940. faith the prophet salallahu choose the
1941. one with faith make the foundation faith
1942. then choose anything else after that
1943. there's nothing in islam says if the
1944. person who is asking for you or you are
1945. asking for them has faith and good
1946. character that's it marry them you have
  1947. somebody
  1948. you can choose
1949. after you find the faith then you look
1950. for the personality you look for the
1951. character then you look if you actually
1952. click or not after mystery or not have
1953. love or not have the same goals in life
1954. or not have the same family situation
1955. understand each other or not attracted
1956. to one another none of that is a problem
1957. you can have all of that but you build
1958. it on a foundation why if you don't have
1959. the foundation of faith the prophet saws
1960. in your hands have ended up with nothing
  1961. but dirt
1962. what did allah create our body from
  1963. there
1964. do you know where we get gold and silver
  1965. from
1966. we don't diamonds we don't get them from
  1967. clouds
1968. and way deep in the
1969. dirt do you know what plants grew up
  1970. from
  1971. there
1972. do you know what animals that eat plants
  1973. what they're creating
1974. and you know that animals that eat
  1975. animals eat plants
1976. people used to make fun of us but now
1977. they found out we have magnesium and we
1978. have potassium we have islands the
1979. funniest thing when you go to the lake
1980. and say oh your iron is low
1981. i feel like iron man now so what am i
  1982. going to suppose
  1983. or something
1984. but it's very funny like iron magnesium
1985. potassium we're talking about dirt
1986. people used to be make fun of islam
1987. because of that now it's science
1988. just like they made fun of islam for so
1989. many years that the prophet went from
1990. mecca to jerusalem and came back in one
1991. night when today is exactly you can do
  1992. that with a flight
1993. but for a long time we've been ridiculed
1994. for a long time would be ridiculous for
  1995. fasting
  1996. oh
1997. i'm glad for the last two three years a
  1998. tall
1999. and the japanese guy got the nobel prize
2000. and everybody's talking about fasting
  2001. and do you like
2002. wet fasting what do you like dry fast
  2003. what is that
2004. oh you don't eat or drink
  2005. oh
2006. you call that dry fasting
2007. now everybody's talking about fasting
2008. one of the best ways to prevent sickness
2009. boost your immune system and even
2010. prevent cancer because it causes the
2011. cell to go to that garbage bag in every
2012. cell which has broken dna it takes it it
2013. cleans it up and it builds itself back
2014. from it so it reduces the chances that
2015. that dna will go crazy and will make
2016. that cell goes you know haywire and end
2017. up a cancerous cell so its own flu
2018. fasting so the idea here is
2019. you know physical attraction where do we
2020. get our bodies made of dirt
2021. the plants that we eat are made of the
2022. animals that we eat are made of dirt
2023. and that's why when people really think
2024. about dirt dirt dirt and i want more
2025. dirt can i have some of that no i like
2026. this dirt can i have more of that dirt
2027. then they become dirty people
2028. islam wants to sanitize you right so
2029. this is very very important for us so
2030. this is something that we need to
2031. consider faith is the foundation and
2032. then build on it anything you want
2033. someone that you like the personality no
2034. problem you like you know their physical
2035. appearance no problem you can add that
2036. after you have the foundation of faith
  2037. so
2038. steps of getting married and i will end
2039. with this people ask like how do we get
2040. married at in islam so this is three
  2041. steps
  2042. or
2043. wedding night so what is
2044. islam says that when someone is
2045. considered someone there's this boy
  2046. considering this girl
2047. the second they make their their
2048. intentions public like his family talks
2049. to her family and now these two families
2050. are considering one another and these
2051. two individuals are considering one
2052. another they did not say yes to one
2053. another yet they're just considering one
2054. another that in the quranic language is
  2055. called
2056. in our modern language it means
  2057. engagement
  2058. but not the quranic
2059. so in islam there is a period in which
2060. two people are considering one
2061. islam tells us if i know this girl is
2062. talking to this guy considering each
2063. other for marriage it is haram for me
  2064. to get in between
2065. don't talk to him consider me
2066. don't talk to her you know
  2067. consider me
  2068. the prophet
2069. let not one of you go and do a hutbach
  2070. over the
  2071. his brother or sister
2072. and let not one of you go and make a
2073. sale over a sale of his brother's sister
2074. so i go to a wholesaler how much you
2075. will send me all of this rice or i'll
  2076. sell it to you
2077. five dollars a pound okay deal i'll buy
2078. a thousand pounds from you someone comes
2079. how much you sold the 25 i'll pay you
2080. six just delete the deal with him and
2081. give it to me that's called a sale over
  2082. a sale
2083. do not do that to each other the prophet
2084. sallallahu because it's going to create
  2085. hatred
  2086. so the first step
2087. is the two families are talking the two
2088. individuals are talking and in this step
2089. i just want you to consider one thing
2090. i see obviously in every generation not
2091. only your generation all those kids
2092. clash with their parents about their
2093. parents saying yes or no
  2094. so
2095. i want to tell you this
  2096. just listen
2097. to your mom and dad
2098. and put your emotions aside
2099. because islam the way it does it the way
2100. islam is supposed to work is
2101. talking talking talking talking talking
2102. talking the second they reach to a
  2103. conclusion if yes
2104. it moves to marriage and love
2105. if no everybody goes his own way
2106. but nobody's evaluating the other while
2107. they are masked with love the prophet
2108. sallallahu alaihi when you love
2109. something you become deaf and blind
2110. deaf and blind you can't see you can't
  2111. hear that's it that's what i want leave
  2112. me alone
2113. so islam encourages that you before you
2114. completely fall in love you might like
  2115. the person
2116. before you completely fall in love go
2117. through the process of what we talked
  2118. about evaluation
2119. evaluate the person before you say yes
2120. by the time you are ready to say yes you
2121. obviously have fell in love with the
2122. person but you didn't fall in love first
  2123. and then consider them
2124. you don't want to do that to yourself
2125. because you're going to pay the price
  2126. for them
2127. usually we don't make good decisions
2128. when we make emotional decisions
  2129. so
2130. you can see the person from a distance
2131. okay i like him i like her okay that's
2132. not called love that's called isla i
2133. want to consider this person
2134. let's find out who are his friends who's
2135. his family what's his past what are his
2136. goals how is his faith how is his
2137. personality how's his character how is
2138. his habits what is he running for what
2139. is he doing how is he sacrificed huh why
2140. why am i pursuing because i like the
  2141. person that's not called love that's
2142. called i like the person
2143. i want to consider that person no
2144. problem with that because we're human
2145. beings you're not going to pursue
2146. something that you don't like
2147. after you do the verification and after
2148. you go through the process now you move
2149. to what two okay let's go and get
2150. serious in the conversation once we get
2151. seized in opposition you like the person
2152. say yes say yes you go and move to the
  2153. next step
  2154. or the marriage contact
  2155. um it's a mess
  2156. so the idea is
2157. you know then you're gonna get men and
2158. now you obviously you will not go and
2159. say yes to another person if you don't
2160. love them obviously the love has kicked
2161. in right now but you verified first
2162. before you fell in love so here's i want
2163. you to consider many of you immediately
2164. go ahead on collision with your parents
2165. now i will give you
2166. that there is anywhere between five
2167. percent to eight percent of parents that
2168. are difficult very hard to deal with
2169. mission impossible and many times
2170. they're not right but consider that it's
2171. in the 90th person time that your
2172. parents are right in your role
2173. your parents are not your animals
  2174. i tell people this
  2175. in general if someone
  2176. brought you to life
2177. raised you gave you everything including
  2178. to this point
  2179. 20 years of sacrifice
  2180. if you are ready
2181. to sell them for someone that you just
2182. came to know two months ago
  2183. that's a problem
2184. your parents are not your enemy
2185. and whether you like it or not yes your
2186. parents knew you before you knew
  2187. yourself
2188. knew your personality the day you were
  2189. born
2190. raised you cherished you and your
2191. parents are not angels and they're not
2192. right all the time i'm not saying that
2193. but give them your ear consider listen
  2194. to them
2195. okay mom you say no to this person
2196. why can you please listen you know
  2197. you've got 40 50 years of experience
  2198. under their belt
2199. listen to that experience why the first
2200. point that we talked about the
2201. disadvantage is there is nothing in
  2202. marriage that
2203. there's nothing in marriage no college
2204. for four years to get a certificate so
2205. you have to build on other people's
2206. experiences the best people is your
2207. parents just listen just listen
2208. promise me that you would listen with an
2209. open mind and open heart and then
2210. evaluate what your mom and dad are
  2211. saying
2212. most of the time they're seeing pieces
2213. of perils gems of wisdom
2214. but you're not there yet you're not
2215. mature you're just basing the whole
  2216. thing on
  2217. we fell in love
2218. we clicked we had chemistry
2219. she's looking your mom and dad are
  2220. looking for a lifelong
2221. there has to be someone who's making a
2222. living there has to be this to be that
  2223. don't marry someone's potential that's
2224. the biggest mistake people do in
2225. marriage you can see the person in front
  2226. of you
2227. but you're saying no they will change
2228. consider that they will never change are
2229. you able to live with them like this if
2230. they never change if the answer is yes
2231. we'll marry them if the answer is no
  2232. don't marry someone's potential manage
2233. someone's deal right now one of the most
2234. fascinating stories that i went through
2235. a sister called me to process divorce
2236. after a year and a half to two years of
  2237. marriage
2238. she shared her story with me and this
2239. happened like 10 years ago
2240. they both were muslims in a public
2241. school and they fell in love with each
2242. other and they went to their parents and
2243. said we want to get married
2244. first year of high school the parents
  2245. said wait
2246. wait until you finish high school okay
  2247. so they waited
2248. they didn't do harm very honorable
2249. they went to college let's get married i
2250. said wait until you go to college until
2251. you finish up so they waited four years
2252. how long is the love story
  2253. eight years
2254. eight years she can see he has a problem
2255. that he needs treatment for he needs
2256. someone to treat him for what's the
  2257. problem
  2258. very
2259. out of out of the order
  2260. nothing really bad
  2261. addicted to video game
2262. and will stay up to four or five a.m
  2263. playing video games
2264. they could not wait for the day that
  2265. they graduated
2266. they got together and they got married
  2267. everything's on
2268. in two years he got kicked out of three
2269. four jobs while she's getting promoted
  2270. promoted promoted
2271. and he cannot keep a single job he
2272. cannot be the man of the house he cannot
2273. be somebody he cannot be successful
2274. how am i gonna be married for the rest
2275. of my life to a husband that keeps on
2276. playing and missing his job and walking
2277. up to him and get fired and fired and
2278. fired and after that nobody's hiring him
2279. because companies you know the word
  2280. spread around
2281. what did she tell you
2282. i saw that in him and i knew it hundred
  2283. percent
2284. but i just kept on saying he would
2285. change he would change he would say and
2286. i never knew that it would rule and she
2287. for sure divorced him and moved on and
2288. got married again and now she's happy
  2289. so sometimes
2290. like really a love story of 80 years oh
2291. my god it broke my heart i tried with
2292. him and he said to me sheikh don't try
  2293. say what he said
  2294. i will tell you i'm
2295. and i love her so much that she needs to
2296. move on with her life
2297. so don't marry someone sometimes one
2298. thing if you don't like what you see
  2299. don't bury someone's potential marry
2300. what you have right now and that's
2301. something that you need to be like
2302. mature so you you really have to sense
2303. maturity i'm very fascinated that the
2304. prophet said in the arabian society
2305. that boys get married at age 14 and 15
2306. and 16 he got married at age 25.
  2307. very impressive
  2308. i personally admitted that age 27
2309. since age 17 i always looked older than
  2310. my age so when i was 17 i looked like 25
  2311. and i was like 20 i looked like 30 and
  2312. when i was 25 i looked like 40. i still
  2313. remember i took
  2314. uh senior citizens
2315. that came from another church to visit
2316. our visit in northwest indiana
2317. so they were saying how old are you i
2318. said no i'm just young i didn't want to
2319. like hurt their feelings they're all in
2320. their 80s i'm 25 years old and the other
  2321. person say oh he's young i think he's 40
  2322. years old
2323. i look 40 years old you broke my heart
2324. you hurt my feelings man anyway but
2325. that's my problem so since age 17 people
2326. have been telling me get mad get married
  2327. get married and i'm like i can't i can
2328. tell you i am not mature
2329. if i get married today i will get
  2330. divorced tomorrow like
  2331. like
  2332. it's like i'm i can sense that i don't
2333. have the patience i don't have the
2334. maturity tell us at age 27 it clicked in
2335. my head i'm mature right now
2336. if if someone makes you mad
2337. right and this is another thing i want
2338. you to go home and have a homework be
  2339. good to your parents
2340. and be good to your brothers and sisters
  2341. because
2342. if just because someone that you've
2343. known for a long time you become mean to
  2344. them
2345. the person you're going to marry do you
2346. want to be married for a long time and
2347. you're going to end up being mean to
  2348. them
2349. be nice to your brothers be nice to your
2350. sisters be nice to your parents because
2351. that will speak volumes about you don't
2352. allow yourself just because you know
2353. someone for a long time to be rude to
2354. them it's not an excuse
  2355. it's not an excuse
2356. really be genuine and be nice because if
2357. you can't be nice to your own blood and
2358. brothers and sisters that mom and dad
2359. it's only a matter of five to six months
2360. maybe one year before you turn on your
  2361. spouse and you become
2362. rude and ugly to them you don't want
2363. that to happen and that will ruin the
2364. entire relationship this is in which
  2365. allah says
  2366. and
2367. you men cannot take women lovers and you
2368. women cannot take men as lovers but you
2369. know this is one ayah actually
2370. actually it's two ayah but the one who
2371. prepared a presentation for me thought
  2372. that is actually one
2373. is boyfriend that you go all the way
  2374. including physical relationship with
2375. because that was the culture of arabia
  2376. before islam
2377. having a boyfriend and a girlfriend with
2378. a physical relationship islam changed
2379. so allah mentioned that in the quran
2380. just in case just wanted to add that and
  2381. i will stop here
  2382. and say so
2383. i'll leave it up to you question and
2384. answer move out of the room that's your
  2385. administration of the
  2386. [Applause]
  2387. [Music]
  2388. um all right
  2389. [Music]
