Purify Your Wealth | Al-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem EP. 13 | A Journey With Shaykh Alauddin ElBakri
Shaykh Alauddin ElBakri
1 moment mention “Youth”:
- Assalaamu 'Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh
- Welcome back to our Ramadan series "As-Sirat al-Mustaqim"
- One of the greatest resources that Allah gave us
- human beings, is wealth. The ability to work and earn it,
- and the ability to spend it, and the ability to manage it.
- When you look at wealth, few
- eye opener's are very important to lay the foundation for this resource.
- Number one, wealth is something
- that you have to work very hard to earn
- and the only way to enjoy it, is by losing it.
- What do we call that?
- Spending.
- So don't get caught so much in wealth because it will drive you
- to lose your mind.
- Number two, wealth was always in someone else's hands.
- Then it comes to your hands
- and then it passes to someone else's hands.
- I want you to think of a flowing river.
- Your father is standing there.
- You're standing in the middle.
- Your son is standing after you.
- And then your grandson, four generations.
- And you all put your hand in the river and the water is running
- while you are washing your hands in the river.
- It's that same water that will touch the father's hand
- the son's, the grandson's and the great grandson's.
- None of you will end up catching the water with your hand,
- and then it becomes yours and only yours.
- So deal with wealth as something that you will earn
- and you will lose, and it will change hands multiple times.
- The third eye opener, when it comes to your wealth, you're only a manager,
- you're actually not an owner.
- This will help you to stay alert,
- aware, awake,
- and careful in how you manage your wealth because you're only been hired
- by Allah to be the manager of this wealth, not the actual owner.
- You are a very, very temporary owner.
- The actual owner, Malikul-Mulk, is Allah SWT
- The fourth eye opener,
- if wealth becomes your goal in life,
- you will lose everything else
- and it's not guaranteed that you will be able to make wealth.
- When wealth becomes a person's
- goal in life, they are willing to do whatever it takes.
- Haram, Halal
- Right, wrong.
- Rob a bank, whatever.
- I just want wealth and I want it now,
- and I want it in an easy way.
- But if wealth becomes the means,
- then you can do so much with it. Why?
- Because now your wealth does not own you.
- You own your wealth.
- And that leads us to the fifth eye opener.
- The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them,
- told us that the Prophet PBUH taught them
- that when they earn wealth in Duniya "life",
- they earn it with their hand, and they spend it with their hand.
- It never should enter their hearts.
- How do you become the owner of your wealth?
- Instead of your wealth becomes your owner and enslaves you, and you'll become
- the slave of money as the Prophet PBUH said:
- "Wretched is the slave of the dinar!
- Wretched is the slave of the dirham!"
- Miserable life is for the servant of the dollar.
- Miserable life is for the servant and the Abd "slave" of the cents
- you should be the owner and the master of your wealth.
- Your wealth shall not be your master, your owner,
- or in some cases it becomes someone's God.
- May Allah save us from that.
- The sixth eye opener is that your wealth
- could be your way to Jannah "heaven" because as we see in the Quran
- that nothing Allah SWT rewards 700 to 1,
- I mean forget 10 to 1,
- We're talking about 700 to 1, is the charity that you give
- from your wealth.
- So instead of your wealth become a barrier between you and Allah
- and a reason why you're drifting away from Allah
- because you think your wealth is going to be enough
- for you and it's going to protect you, and you don't need anyone else.
- That's the Achilles heel,
- and the killer of a believer is Iman and Faith.
- Your wealth cannot save you or protect you,
- only Allah SWT
- will be able to protect you and save you.
- The seventh eye opener is to understand
- the role of Zakat in your wealth,
- Allah SWT chose this word,
- "Zakat" and Zakat has two meanings.
- Subhanallah, and they are related to one another.
- The first meaning is to purify something,
- and that's what we,
- when we go through the journey of purification, we call it "Tazkiyah"
- it's from the word "Zakat"
- And the second thing "Zakat" means is growth.
- When you grow something, you're doing Tazkiyah to it.
- Subhanallah, Allah wants you to have it deep in your heart,
- that when you pay Zakat, your money is not going to become less,
- it will become more. You do two things,
- you purify your money and you grow it at the same time.
- The example that I find very suitable for this is that when you go
- and have a slaughter, a lamb, just for you to eat,
- you and your family, after you slaughter it and skin it,
- you give it to the butcher and you say: "Take the fat out,
- the chunks of fat out of it" because that fat, if you eat it,
- it will cause you heart attack and stroke and God knows what else,
- and high cholesterol and this and that.
- But you clean that,
- that's Zakat. The Zakat of your money,
- If you consume it yourself, it will hurt you.
- That's why Allah wants you to purify your money and give it to the poor.
- It will be good for them, but not good for you.
- The second thing is when you tell the butcher:
- "Please cut one leg, I want to give it as a charity" you know,
- now you're talking about Sadaqa "Charity"
- Now, when you give
- the butcher the lamb and you say" "Can you just give me like one fourth
- and the rest I have to give it away?"
- What do we call that?
- "Odheya" on the day of Eid al-Adha
- That's called sacrifice.
- And when you give the most and keep the least,
- Zakat is very, very essential to our Iman and faith.
- And it's one of the things that helps us to be
- not completely attached to our money and wealth, to the point
- that we lose our humanity and our generosity.
- Now, when it comes to managing our wealth,
- Islam has a beautiful recipe, that I feel now,
- people are teaching it
- all over the world and universities and institutions of knowledge.
- Is that the way you should manage your wealth,
- is to divide it into four segments.
- The first segment is your basic necessities and needs
- and don't overspend on your basic necessities and needs.
- When it comes to food and eating less is more less eating more health
- when it comes to spending on your clothes, also less is more
- because you are not going to be able to wear all of these clothes.
- So the first thing is pay for your needs rent, utilities, gas,
- and the things that you need every day in your life,
- and don't overspend on that. Why?
- Because the second segment that our faith encourages us to do is to save.
- We need to save money, and
- that was the instruction of the Prophet PBUH
- to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas when he felt he was going to die,
- May Allah Almighty be pleased with him
- He said: "I want to give all my wealth for the sake of Allah"
- He said: "No"
- He said: "Oh Prophet,
- I want to give two thirds of my wealth"
- He said: "No"
- "Half of my wealth?"
- "No", "One third of my wealth?" He said:
- "And the one third is a bit too much"
- And then, Prophet PBUH I told him: "For you to leave your children
- with some wealth is better than you leaving them with nothing"
- Subhanallah, saving is a part of our faith.
- The third segment of your money is when you re-invest,
- you'll find that the Companions and the followers
- and the four Imams, they all had businesses and they invested.
- And the fourth segment of your money, that is the part that you give
- for charity, whether it is Zakat
- or Sadaqa or sacrifice
- or you help another Muslim, give them a loan,
- you know, because they are at difficult times and hard times.
- But managing our wealth is essential to our faith.
- Finally, the Prophet PBUH said,
- What a beautiful match.
- What a good match, good wealth for a good believer.
- This Islam was built on the wealth of the righteous.
- We need wealthy people in our community.
- I make Duaa "prayers" for all of these youth.
- May Allah help you to,
- you know, have a career and then have your own start up company
- and make a lot of money so that you can give a lot of money.
- This is something very essential.
- We don't hate wealth.
- We just don't make it our Lord and our God.
- We make it the means to Allah SWT
- May Allah the Mighty and the Majestic give us
- Halal and good sustenance
- which is, pure,
- good, permissible, and good for us.
- Ameen Ya Rabb Alameen
- May Allah blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions
