  35. you should know
  36. sorry we're still trying to figure out
  37. the technical difficulties um

  45. having a little bit of conflict with the
  46. echo inshallah but inshallah
  47. so we're going to get started
  48. insha'allah with our program once again
  49. welcome to our grand slam tonight at mca
  50. this is a collaboration between pawaso
  51. and mta as long as um
  52. as well as with mta youth and so before
  53. we get started let me just explain a
  54. little bit about what owasso is if
  55. you've never heard of it um basically
  56. it's an organization that's founded by
  57. sheikh al-azin al-baqi
  58. it works on empowering the youth right
  59. through their space and their identity
  60. and this we do through learning we do
  61. through mentorship and we also do
  62. through community service and um
  63. we're partnering with mcau today so that
  64. we can raise well-rounded individuals
  65. right you're confident and you're dean
  66. insha'allah and actually throughout the
  67. night here's a little fun surprise for
  68. you um we are going to be having trivia
  69. questions for the youth in our audience
  70. like high school and college students
  71. inshallah because we really want to hear
  72. your voices as well so
  73. stay tuned for that throughout the night
  74. we also have like gift cards and prizes
  75. for you all they're gonna be hard
  76. questions though okay
  77. insha allah but anyways to start off our
  78. event obviously it's called powered by
  79. the quran right so
  80. what better way to start than with the
  81. recitation of the quran in allah and so
  82. our body tonight is actually
  83. only 17 years old his name is
  84. [Music]
  85. [Music]
  86. and allah presents examples for the
  87. people and allah is the knowing of all
  88. things
  89. such niches are in mosques which allah
  90. has ordered to be raised and that his
  91. name to be mentioned
  92. therein exalting him within them in the
  93. morning and the evenings
  94. our men who remove the communists
  95. from the remembrance of allah and
  96. performance of prayer and giving of the
  97. heart that they fear a day in which the
  98. hearts and eyes will faithfully turn a
  99. town about
  100. that allah may reward them according to
  101. the rest of what they did and increase
  102. them from his bounty
  103. and allah gives pervision to whom he
  104. wills without account
  105. next i'll be reading the translation for
  106. sure
  107. indeed we send the quran
  108. down during the night of the crew and
  109. what can make you know what is the night
  110. of night of decree the night of decree
  111. is
  112. the angels and the spirits descend there
  113. and by commission of the lord for every
  114. matter
  115. peace it is until the emergence of god
  116. next i'll be reading the foundation of
  117. sunderland
  118. by time indeed mankind is involved
  119. except for those who have believed and
  120. unrighteous needs and advised each other
  121. to truth and advise each other
  122. oh
  123. okay next we're going to be introducing
  124. uh imam
  125. anwar
  126. he's uh an american muslim scholar and
  127. preacher born in london england he lived
  128. in the san francisco bay area since 1983
  129. after completing his religious studies
  130. imam has served the bay area muslim
  131. community
  132. since 2000
  133. he also teaches islamic law at zaituna
  134. college he is currently the chairman of
  135. the board of nissan north american
  136. islamic shelter for their abuse
  137. an organization that works towards
  138. alleviating issues related to domestic
  139. violence please help me welcome my
  140. father
  141. so
  142. foreign
  143. [Music]
  144. in the name of allah most gracious most
  145. merciful i bear witness that there is
  146. none worthy of worship except the one
  147. allah
  148. and that his beloved nabi and prophet
  149. muhammad
  150. peace and blessings of allah be upon him
  151. is his last and final
  152. it gives me great pleasure and honor to
  153. be here with all of you on this blessed
  154. night
  155. in this blessed month of ramadan in this
  156. extremely blessed faith
  157. for those of you that may not know i've
  158. actually lived in the bay area for
  159. almost 40 years
  160. which means that
  161. this
  162. was
  163. a dream
  164. growing up
  165. i traced my route so far back when i was
  166. maybe your age
  167. that we used to come to the mca for yam
  168. in the morning
  169. but there were no four facilities
  170. so we would actually bring our support
  171. with us in our cars
  172. and our cereal and milk and bowls
  173. everything and after the yam we go into
  174. the parking lot open the trunk of our
  175. cars and stand and have our support air
  176. so times have definitely changed
  177. for the better alhamdulillah
  178. but in any case
  179. the thing that i want to speak to you
  180. about today happens to be from the quran
  181. specifically
  182. our relationship with our parents
  183. and primarily
  184. our relationship with our
  185. mothers very very interesting that when
  186. we open the quran
  187. we find of course verses in the quran
  188. where
  189. allah god almighty reminds us
  190. to be kind and beautiful to our parents
  191. but not just that
  192. there's
  193. specific mention of mothers
  194. in multiple places so for example
  195. there's a chapter in the quran called
  196. mary maryam
  197. there's an entire chapter in the quran
  198. and the story begins
  199. or sorry the chapter begins
  200. with
  201. there's three verses that i'm going to
  202. touch on really quickly
  203. allah refers to
  204. the specific incident when she gave
  205. birth to
  206. prior
  207. to him being born allah
  208. foreign
  209. um
  210. allah refers to
  211. the difficulty
  212. can we just get everyone in the back to
  213. quiet down please
  214. thank
  215. the pain that she was having as a result
  216. of that pregnancy
  217. brought her to a
  218. date palm tree underneath the date palm
  219. tree
  220. and in that moment for those for those
  221. of us that know the story of maryam
  222. the miraculous pregnancy in the
  223. miraculous birth
  224. in that moment she said
  225. i wish that i had died before this and i
  226. was completely forgotten that no one
  227. would even know
  228. who i was
  229. but interestingly enough
  230. allah had different plans for her
  231. right interestingly allah had different
  232. plans for her she gave birth
  233. and the story
  234. generations later
  235. makes mention of her in the quran in an
  236. entire chapter not just a verse not just
  237. two verses rather an entire chapter
  238. happens to be the only woman in regards
  239. to whom allah has an entire chapter not
  240. even the blessed wives
  241. of the believers have an entire chapter
  242. after them despite their importance and
  243. despite the the need for our
  244. revering them for being the wives of the
  245. prophet
  246. there's two more verses i want to touch
  247. on i don't have a
  248. we reminded we gave advice to the human
  249. beings to be beautiful to their parents
  250. she bore him the mother bore him with
  251. difficulty upon difficulty
  252. i'm mentioning the difficulty piece for
  253. a reason because there's a hadith that i
  254. want to mention at the end
  255. she bore him with difficulty upon
  256. difficulty right that's what allah
  257. subhanahu wa
  258. the verse is longer it carries on but
  259. that's i'm going to move on
  260. then another place right around there
  261. allah says
  262. and we give advice to the human beings
  263. to be kind to their parents now listen
  264. to this says
  265. if they force you
  266. to associate partners with god
  267. because of them not having knowledge
  268. the only time in your life in which you
  269. are not allowed to obey your parents is
  270. if they ask you to associate partners
  271. with allah
  272. otherwise you always have to obey your
  273. talent then interestingly allah
  274. that we will all return
  275. be with them
  276. so we recite the quran we read the quran
  277. but the message of the quran is very
  278. very powerful
  279. and when it comes to parents
  280. and specifically mothers
  281. allah not the prophet
  282. himself reminds us to be
  283. a human being
  284. can never
  285. never ever
  286. repay
  287. their mother
  288. for what she has
  289. but
  290. interestingly enough he continues and
  291. says that maybe
  292. maybe if your mother was a slave
  293. and you freed her she was a slave and
  294. you freed her
  295. that maybe you might have been able to
  296. repay her for a few moments
  297. of the pregnancy
  298. and so many of us myself included
  299. have immigrant parents
  300. and they don't necessarily understand
  301. the culture that we're being raised in
  302. a lifestyle around us
  303. but let's not forget that our parents
  304. come from
  305. religion and culture
  306. in which
  307. they've been top down
  308. they have certain values
  309. and they do have in reality sometimes
  310. an interesting way
  311. to share those values
  312. they have an interesting way of sharing
  313. those values with us
  314. but their hearts are in the right place
  315. their hearts are in the right place
  316. these are the very parents
  317. who when they wake up in them and i'm
  318. telling you from experience
  319. when they wake up in the middle of the
  320. night to pray to allah they're probably
  321. praying more for their kids than they
  322. are for themselves
  323. this is not something you tell your kids
  324. you just don't it's not like i go to my
  325. kids and say hey kiddo you know when i
  326. wake up in the middle of the night i
  327. pray a lot for you i don't do that
  328. it sounds weird
  329. but that's the
  330. reality and it's as a result of those
  331. prayers
  332. that we end up succeeding with the
  333. result of those prayers that divine
  334. doors open up for us we sit in classes
  335. and we're able to understand and
  336. comprehend we meet people that may be a
  337. benefit to us in our life at a later
  338. point you end up getting a job interview
  339. at a place where you never thought you'd
  340. get a job interview you end up getting
  341. into a college or university you never
  342. thought you were going to get into hard
  343. work no doubt
  344. hard work no doubt but we believe in the
  345. muslim tradition that it's not just
  346. about hard work we believe in the power
  347. of prayer
  348. and that's why and the most powerful
  349. prayer amongst the prayers that are
  350. definitely
  351. always accepted you never never ever
  352. and so while we do the hard work don't
  353. ever forget that it's those prayers that
  354. even inspire us to do the hard work
  355. right it's those prayers that get us
  356. into places that we need to get into
  357. don't ever forget that that's that's
  358. and that's why when we talk about
  359. prayers you know
  360. the common habit amongst
  361. the eastern culture or the muslim
  362. culture is we ask our elders to make you
  363. up for us we go to you know go to
  364. grandma you go grandpa if they make your
  365. outfit right
  366. and
  367. the ulama our teachers remind us and
  368. they tell us and of course the prayer of
  369. the mother is far more powerful
  370. my parents happen to be alive
  371. and i'll go to my parents for prayers
  372. and my dad will say go to your mom
  373. she said he says go to your mom my dad's
  374. a so you know you kind of think
  375. like dad knows you know and he's on
  376. um but in any case
  377. um you know he'll say go to your mom
  378. because
  379. there's one thing to ask someone to pray
  380. for you
  381. but it's an entirely different thing
  382. to do things for someone
  383. you do you do things for them
  384. you do things with them
  385. as a result of which
  386. the prayers come from inside
  387. that moment of excitement that moment of
  388. happiness that moment of life
  389. and while sometimes you and i might not
  390. take it for granted because she's just
  391. mom what does mom know
  392. that's his dad what does dad know
  393. but they have a spiritual relationship
  394. with the almighty
  395. which has been given to them and every
  396. parent has it which means when you
  397. become parents this is going to happen
  398. as well
  399. when you become parents
  400. it just automatically happens
  401. and so they have that spiritual
  402. relationship with the creator with the
  403. almighty
  404. that when we do things good for them
  405. there's a prayer
  406. when we do things to please them to
  407. conduce your prayers and i'll share this
  408. very personal and i'll close with this
  409. you know i've shared this in the past i
  410. don't like to make it public
  411. but it is what it is and this is just an
  412. example for you right for those of you
  413. that for those of you that know me no
  414. i'm kind of busy okay just for the
  415. record you know what i'm saying i i
  416. this is my third event tonight you know
  417. what i'm saying
  418. um
  419. and so you know you're kind of busy
  420. but you have the honor of looking after
  421. your parents the mom
  422. it's a busy day and mom just tells you
  423. we're indians
  424. okay
  425. you may find the non-arabs non-babies
  426. and they haven't been their wife
  427. i mean for reality most of us that are
  428. being raised in america are probably
  429. going to get married from muslims
  430. regardless of their effort background
  431. you know what i'm saying again i don't
  432. want to go again i'm sorry
  433. i'm bringing up controversial issues
  434. here okay okay okay um but mom tells me
  435. hey kiddo
  436. no matter who you are
  437. no matter what your life may be no
  438. matter where your bios get read no
  439. matter no matter what your
  440. accomplishment may be no matter when you
  441. walk into a hall everyone gets up and
  442. you get to sit at the front table
  443. this is part of this is part of my
  444. territory this is who i am as an
  445. individual
  446. but you know what
  447. i believe i brought there
  448. i'm being
  449. and when you go home with that
  450. medication
  451. even before mom thinks you're going to
  452. pick it up tomorrow
  453. that prayer
  454. is what will make all the rest of my
  455. events afterwards in my days
  456. now i get
  457. um
  458. i recognized
  459. simply making them happy
  460. and so and so you know we think and of
  461. course importantly we we respect our
  462. elders and our prayers but if you happen
  463. to be in the in the mall or in
  464. a parking lot and there's an older
  465. person that happens to be here and you
  466. decide to maybe help them you know what
  467. i'm saying offload their cart or take
  468. their cars and put it where it belongs
  469. and so on so forth and they say thank
  470. you they don't have to be muslim they
  471. say thank you that in and of itself is a
  472. prayer that is because allah recognizes
  473. our service to others especially those
  474. that happen to be older
  475. and even more
  476. and you know i i alluded to just a few
  477. moments ago
  478. we think our parents are old they don't
  479. get it
  480. there's some things they don't get
  481. there's some things they do get there's
  482. certain things that they choose to
  483. ignore
  484. um you know
  485. but don't ever underestimate the values
  486. of
  487. and for them being alive and for those
  488. prayers that come your way i'm going to
  489. share two stories with you
  490. my grandfather
  491. very highest man in his old age he would
  492. prowl to make the praise to do his
  493. prayers you know i would call him
  494. and i would ask him i would say you know
  495. i say maybe up for me and he would get
  496. obsessed
  497. he would say you're not supposed to ask
  498. me to make you out for this job
  499. i cried i didn't cry because you died
  500. like it was just time to go
  501. i cried because
  502. a person who would wake up in
  503. young people must acknowledge that our
  504. elders especially our parents and even
  505. more
  506. you know a lot of us are you know
  507. here at this event rightfully so there's
  508. probably going to be a volunteering
  509. event on a saturday morning rightfully
  510. so but if there's stuff that needs to be
  511. done at home and your mom is asking you
  512. to do that that comes with anything else
  513. in the world
  514. what mom tells you to do what dad tells
  515. you to
  516. the do
  517. what the people need to do
  518. yeah i already answered
  519. how many
  520. is
  521. and i understand there may be a little
  522. bit of a difference there but in reality
  523. the fact is that the fact that your
  524. mother gave you birth that's enough for
  525. us to be at her service
  526. for the rest of our lives that's what
  527. that's what our that's what our
  528. solutions
  529. want i want to leave everyone in a state
  530. of gratitude for those of us that have
  531. the ability right um i i i got a phone
  532. call from someone a few nights ago
  533. there's a young family
  534. the mother in her late 30s
  535. died of cancer three years ago
  536. now four children all being raised by
  537. the father
  538. young men
  539. he passed away a day before ramadan
  540. so all of a sudden you got four kids
  541. without any chance right now i
  542. understand that some of you may be among
  543. those who may not have parents
  544. whatever the case may mean but in every
  545. moment of ours
  546. as parents um of us and many of us may
  547. not have been raised by our grandparents
  548. but the very command that allah gives to
  549. us when it comes to looking after your
  550. parents with the things of grant which
  551. is why in islamic law when you give your
  552. zakah for example you can't give the
  553. people whom you are required to
  554. financially look after and you can't
  555. give your zagat to your children you
  556. cannot give the task to your parents you
  557. can't even give the cash to your
  558. grandparents because if your
  559. grandparents were old and had no means
  560. of income
  561. and it's not just looking after them
  562. it's also knowing that our success lies
  563. in ensuring that we continue to look
  564. after them and i will tell you this i
  565. said this
  566. listen guys
  567. i want you to know i was your age at one
  568. point you know my parents were young too
  569. my dad walked with a cane now and i i
  570. never thought in my life a day would
  571. come when i would see my dad walking
  572. with a pain it was just it was just
  573. mind-blowing you know what i'm saying
  574. like you don't think about this as a
  575. young kid you just think dad is dead
  576. like he's going to be hustling bustling
  577. you know screaming driving around his
  578. entire life
  579. okay
  580. but in reality you know there came an
  581. age where that changed
  582. that change nothing
  583. um
  584. don't get me wrong my dad is awesome i'm
  585. just gonna be honest my dad's really hot
  586. my dad
  587. if i may share oh man i'm going to get a
  588. lot can i get into trouble no
  589. no i okay a lot kind of hesitated
  590. i'm not going to get in
  591. um but in any case uh i love i love my
  592. parents but what i mean to say is
  593. you know now he even needs i like i need
  594. to open the corridor for him for him to
  595. be able to get out when he gets out like
  596. sometimes he's wobbly he's got to hold
  597. him you know what i'm saying and like it
  598. changes really fast but that's when you
  599. need to be emotion we all need to be
  600. mentally emotionally prepared
  601. maybe for that day to come
  602. and if the responsibility of looking
  603. after your parents like how many of you
  604. have multiple brothers and sisters i'm
  605. sorry my answer is very long tell me
  606. this thought okay we all have multiple
  607. okay some of you so so sometimes when
  608. your parents get old and if they need
  609. you okay siblings usually fight like why
  610. do i have to look after them all the
  611. time why do i have to do things for them
  612. all the time your parents may do this
  613. with their siblings too by the way okay
  614. i'm just saying
  615. okay
  616. but the reality is
  617. what we've been taught
  618. is the is the child
  619. or the children
  620. who look after their parents are
  621. actually the lucky ones
  622. they've been chosen by allah and so that
  623. burden that financial burden that
  624. physical burden by the way there's a lot
  625. of burdens when it comes to looking
  626. after your parents it's actually not a
  627. burden it's an honor and don't ever
  628. forget that because as a result of that
  629. we believe in our tradition allah would
  630. look after you the rest of your life
  631. allah will look after your children
  632. allah will look after your means of
  633. sustenance like god opens his defined
  634. doors when we are there for our elders
  635. and our parents and that that's that's
  636. what makes our tradition so unique i'm
  637. not saying we're perfect
  638. i'm not saying i'm not saying anyone's
  639. perfect just saying that we have to try
  640. to do our best
  641. you know
  642. and so
  643. our next speaker
  644. mashallah is going to be joining us
  645. online is
  646. hussein kamani so he's an instructor at
  647. flam institute he was born and raised in
  648. elizabethtown kentucky and his journey
  649. to pursue sacred islamic knowledge began
  650. at the age of only six years old so by
  651. the time he was nine masa allah he had
  652. already become a hafiz and to further
  653. his studies in the islamic sciences he
  654. actually traveled to the uk and pursued
  655. you know formal islamic authorizations
  656. in gaza after that he was selected for
  657. a postgraduate level course in islamic
  658. law and legal verdicts so he completed
  659. that within two years he later earned
  660. another graduate degree in business
  661. management and he currently resides in
  662. dallas texas with his wife and four
  663. children masha'allah so you know as i
  664. mentioned
  665. kentucky right so he grew up in rural
  666. america and so he comes
  667. you know with this perspective of
  668. knowing how to connect to the quran
  669. regardless of your environment and so
  670. he's coming with us online mashaallah
  671. it's 3am there so we're really grateful
  672. for his time so inshallah please help us
  673. welcome mosti hussein kamani
  674. i wanted to start off the evening by
  675. first and foremost thanking our dear
  676. beloved chief aladdin for inviting me
  677. and for the tawaso team for setting this
  678. up
  679. an amazing awesome program
  680. i had the opportunity to listen to imam
  681. tahir and his amazing stories and may
  682. allah reward him for
  683. being here and for
  684. [Music]
  685. for
  686. sharing his wisdom allah subhanahu wa
  687. elevate him
  688. the
  689. subject that we have
  690. for today
  691. being muslim
  692. is a
  693. is a beautiful
  694. i don't know if you guys can hear me or
  695. not
  696. uh we'll start again
  697. so i was saying that i start off today
  698. by first and foremost
  699. uh thanking sheikh al-din bakri for his
  700. generosity of inviting me and setting up
  701. this program and the tawaso team
  702. for setting this amazing event up may
  703. allah subhanahu wa reward you today is
  704. the 29th tonight is the 29th night of
  705. ramadan 23rd night sorry and it's
  706. one of the possible
  707. nights of later
  708. and
  709. this is one of those nights that we
  710. spend wisely and
  711. in reality it's a night of ibadah
  712. we do these lectures just to motivate us
  713. and engage us but the true essence of
  714. the night lies
  715. in
  716. doing your worship
  717. right committing to a schedule and
  718. making dua allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala
  719. doing tilawa of the quran abundantly
  720. that's where the baraka is may allah
  721. subhanahu wa allow us to be from those
  722. who make the most of this night
  723. the quran is an amazing guide
  724. and it teaches us
  725. that which we would not know without it
  726. the quran is a road map for us
  727. and it teaches us to walk through the
  728. different paths of life and overcome the
  729. various hurdles
  730. so we can reach our ultimate goal which
  731. is the love of allah
  732. and by attaining the love of allah
  733. be from those who benefit from the
  734. reward of allah al-jannah inshallah
  735. the quran consists of stories
  736. and each of these stories carry
  737. a moral a lesson for us to learn from
  738. because it's through stories that people
  739. see
  740. complicated and very technical and
  741. sophisticated issues manifest in a
  742. simple easy way
  743. taqwa for example
  744. which means to be conscious of allah
  745. in essence is a very simple
  746. concept
  747. but
  748. when you bring this awareness and
  749. consciousness of allah into your life
  750. and as you go through life and you face
  751. different scenarios and you apply that
  752. taqwa
  753. it becomes
  754. um
  755. it becomes challenging
  756. because one thing is a word that has a
  757. definition
  758. to now a reality that you live every day
  759. it challenges you so the quran teaches
  760. us through examples and stories of how
  761. people in the past did this
  762. when i look at the stories of the quran
  763. i find them to be in two categories
  764. either allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala is
  765. telling us of people
  766. throughout history and throughout the
  767. passing of time
  768. who really messed up
  769. who did things that were so
  770. consequential
  771. they were so vile and horrible
  772. that allah warns us of their actions so
  773. that we take heed and avoid making those
  774. very same mistakes
  775. whether it was sexual immorality
  776. whether it was societal harms being
  777. inflicted on on others through
  778. economical oppression
  779. or
  780. whether those people chose arrogance as
  781. a path and return oppressed others
  782. ultimately
  783. attracting the anger of allah subhanahu
  784. wa
  785. but on the other hand we have stories
  786. of
  787. prophets of allah and friends of allah
  788. and allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala captures
  789. from their lives
  790. the most sincere moments in history
  791. it's as if their stories are like the
  792. wall of fame where allah lists out their
  793. names and captures those parts
  794. those few moments
  795. in history
  796. where sincerity reached its peak
  797. whether it's the wife of pharaoh
  798. asia
  799. who was tested for everything
  800. she had to give up everything she had
  801. to prove her love for allah
  802. or the many stories of rasulullah
  803. sallallahu alaihi wasallam where allah
  804. subhanahu wa revealed verses
  805. and the sahabah prove their loyalty to
  806. rasulullah
  807. so between these stories there are many
  808. lessons
  809. today i wanted to take a look at some
  810. verses of surah al-furqan
  811. allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala shares with us
  812. a story of a person
  813. and the reason why i share this story is
  814. because when we're in school
  815. you know on the day-to-day or whether
  816. we're at work on the day-to-day
  817. we have a responsibility to
  818. carry our iman
  819. on our chest and on our shoulders with
  820. pride and honor
  821. being muslim in the masjid while
  822. surrounded by fellow muslims is
  823. somewhat easier because there's an
  824. environment there and that's why
  825. gatherings like these are so important
  826. but ultimately
  827. your iman can't be left at the door of
  828. the masjid that has to follow you
  829. wherever you go where you become a
  830. billboard of dawa no matter where you
  831. are
  832. and
  833. as a result of that
  834. the beauty of islam spreads to the world
  835. and people are honored
  836. by finding iman
  837. and begin their journey to allah
  838. it's where your environment no longer
  839. exists that
  840. things become difficult
  841. praying salah in the masjid is easy
  842. praying at home is easy for many of us
  843. but praying salah work
  844. and praying salah
  845. at school becomes difficult because no
  846. one is really watching over our shoulder
  847. and there is a big transition that
  848. occurs for
  849. many of our children who spend years in
  850. islamic schools and then now it's time
  851. for them to move on to college
  852. university high school
  853. it's an opportunity for them to live
  854. everything they've learned now in this
  855. environment
  856. it takes a heart for a person to say
  857. it's a lot of time i'm going to pray
  858. for them to talk to their deen for them
  859. to talk to their principal and say that
  860. it's jummah we need a place to pray
  861. on the other hand there are some muslims
  862. unfortunately due to peer pressure
  863. social pressure
  864. intimidation
  865. that at these very critical points
  866. they walk away
  867. they hide their islam
  868. they cover their name
  869. that is
  870. a representation of their islam
  871. and
  872. this
  873. creates great harm in your own spiritual
  874. growth
  875. why should a person be shy of something
  876. that allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala has
  877. honored them with
  878. was once sitting with some persian
  879. generals
  880. and they were having a meal
  881. he dropped a morsel from his hand these
  882. were the wealthiest and the most
  883. influential human beings on the planet
  884. the persian generals
  885. so
  886. when he dropped his morsel he did what
  887. rasulullah said he was
  888. taught them to do which was he picked it
  889. up cleaned it and it was getting ready
  890. to eat it
  891. the person next to him elbowed him right
  892. away and said hey man what are you doing
  893. you know there's enough food here you
  894. don't need to pick up food from the
  895. ground and eat it
  896. you do realize that these people will
  897. look down upon you if you
  898. pick up food from the ground clean it
  899. and eat it that's not that's not proper
  900. so half one looked at the person
  901. and gave him a
  902. look of amazement and shock and almost
  903. belittling him like are you crazy
  904. and then said to him
  905. that you expect me to abandon the sunnah
  906. rasool allah for these idiots
  907. every person does what they want to
  908. every person chooses what they wish to
  909. do these guys are going to do whatever
  910. they want to do and i'm going to do what
  911. i want to do because i'm proud of it
  912. or persian or roman or indian or whoever
  913. it is
  914. companions that this is who i am except
  915. me for this
  916. in the quran we have a story of an
  917. individual who
  918. unfortunately made a bad decision
  919. there was a person in makkah karma
  920. who was a successful businessman
  921. was giving dawah to people in the early
  922. days of islam in mecca
  923. he hadn't accepted islam but when nabi
  924. is speak
  925. he would listen
  926. he would listen attentively
  927. he didn't read
  928. ridicule the prophet
  929. maybe he said allah
  930. had his eye on him
  931. and was waiting for the opportunity to
  932. give him
  933. one day he returned from a trip he
  934. gathered everyone in mecca together
  935. because of the successful
  936. nature of the journey and the prophet
  937. that he made
  938. so he threw a big feast
  939. he also invited rasulullah
  940. when it came time to serve food and
  941. every summer said to him
  942. i won't eat until you become muslim
  943. now that's a bold move i won't recommend
  944. you guys to pull something like this off
  945. did this because he knew that person and
  946. had his hand on the pulse and knew that
  947. he just needed a nudge
  948. and in front of everyone like this
  949. the arabs would never turn away their
  950. guest or their request
  951. so
  952. he
  953. did what nabi is expected him to do and
  954. you can see how the prophet
  955. sallam's pitch was very much calculated
  956. he said allah
  957. the next day
  958. when he was in the streets of makkah
  959. he met his buddies his old buddies
  960. i heard that you became muslim last
  961. night so you're hanging out with the
  962. muslims these days
  963. is that what you're planning to do
  964. so
  965. this individual said no i became muslim
  966. but i still want to hang out with you
  967. all you guys are my friends
  968. said well you're going to have to choose
  969. either it's them or us
  970. and this is a situation many of us find
  971. ourselves in that there is immense
  972. social and peer pressure
  973. this man unfortunately
  974. made the wrong decision
  975. and he said to abu jahl i choose you
  976. guys
  977. over them
  978. abu jahl said to him well then go to the
  979. prophet sallam
  980. and publicly
  981. reject his faith
  982. and in one narration he also said to him
  983. go and spit on his face
  984. humiliate him
  985. was a very
  986. horrible man
  987. who took advantage of the kindness of
  988. navi
  989. so this person came to the prophet
  990. saddam publicly in front of everyone
  991. and rejected the prophet he said a man
  992. also
  993. attempted to spit on the prophet
  994. sallallahu alaihi
  995. in one narration jibir ali salaam took a
  996. spit and threw it back on his face
  997. you had it
  998. you had iman it was in your heart you
  999. were one of us
1000. and then for these fools you folded
1001. the oppressor will be biting away at his
1002. fingers something people do when they're
1003. nervous and they know that there's
  1004. trouble on the way
  1005. he will say
1006. only if i had kept my path with the
1007. prophet if i was loyal
1008. because it's at these moments when life
1009. throws all sorts of scenarios at you
  1010. that
1011. your iman is tested and whether you
1012. understand what taqwa means is tested
1013. whether you understand what love for the
  1014. prophet of allah means
  1015. this is tested
  1016. because
  1017. he
  1018. distracted me dissuaded me
  1019. misguided me
1020. from the remembrance and indicating
1021. meaning from this deen from the quran
  1022. from this beautiful message
1023. after it had arrived with me
1024. after i had it in my hands and my heart
  1025. it was here
1026. so in these blessed mubarak nights of
  1027. ramadan
1028. one thing to make dua for is ya allah
1029. give us confidence in our iman
  1030. make us firm
1031. make us advocates of this deen ya allah
  1032. allow
1033. iman to reach the roots of my heart
1034. where it becomes a part of me
1035. and i am proud of it and you are proud
  1036. of me too
1037. this is what a confident muslim is
1038. and this is what our deen calls us to
1039. this story of the quran is one
1040. that relates to many of us
1041. and i pray that allah
1042. allows it to be an inspiration for us
1043. that no matter where we are
1044. our allah is with us
1045. when we're walking in the hallway and
1046. the thought of haram enters into our
  1047. minds
1048. we don't engage it because we know that
1049. our allah is with us
1050. when you're sitting in the traffic and a
1051. thought crosses your mind to look at
1052. something haram don't do it
1053. your allah is with you
1054. when you're at work and the thought
1055. crosses your mind let me cheat let me
1056. waste time let me do this let me do that
1057. let me just kill a little time on the on
1058. the internet and look at something or do
1059. something or skip my salah or skip my
  1060. fast no one's watching
1061. taqwa is the reminder that your allah is
1062. with you no matter whoever you are
1063. whenever you are or where wherever you
  1064. are
  1065. time place or individual
1066. your allah is always with you
1067. may allah bless us with this
1068. understanding and bless us with the
  1069. purest form of iman
1070. once again it was a pleasure being here
1071. uh with the tawaso team you guys are
1072. always doing amazing work i hope that
1073. very soon we're able to be together in
1074. person may allah prolong the life of
  1075. for
1076. being such a positive influence on the
1077. community and something i mentioned
  1078. before i
1079. uh was cut off earlier with the bad
1080. connection that uh it was a pleasure
1081. also seeing him on fire and hearing his
  1082. stories
  1083. the gathering of
1084. a source of mercy and so
  1085. [Applause]
  1086. all of your thoughts
  1087. um
1088. and sold them subhanallah until they got
1089. enough of 100 halal income to
1090. allow him to pursue his education and so
1091. i mean subhanallah this is the fruit of
1092. his parents labor so may allah
1093. bless them and bless him insha'allah i
  1094. mean
  1095. um so
1096. we are going to move on to some trivia
1097. as i mentioned earlier this is just
1098. going to be a few questions we're going
1099. to throw in before our next speaker and
1100. this is specifically for the youth and
1101. so we're going to go
  1102. one round for
1103. the males and one round to the females
1104. and there are ten dollar
1105. gift cards in sha allah for the winners
1106. so be attentive insha'allah so you want
1107. to start off with the first one
  1108. all right
  1109. brothers
1110. you guys want to talk to you when you
  1111. hear the question
1112. all right so the first question
1113. this one's not too hard
1114. how many prophets are mentioned in the
  1115. quran
  1116. [Applause]
  1117. from the sisters
  1118. okay
1119. this one's a little bit trickier but you
1120. guys should be smarter in seoul
1121. okay so question number two
1122. which surah has the name
  1123. allah in every verse
1124. yes all the way in the red scarf
  1125. yes masala
  1126. [Applause]
  1127. amazing masala
1128. so we're going to have
1129. do you guys want more questions or
1130. should we go to the next speaker
  1131. sure
  1132. i can't hear you
1133. okay okay we'll do one more round
  1134. okay
1135. trying to find a harder question for the
  1136. brother
1137. okay this one you guys might have to
  1138. guess a little
1139. how many times is the word quran
  1140. mentioned in the quran
1141. back there all the way in the back how
  1142. many times
  1143. no
  1144. no
  1145. no
  1146. no
  1147. who's
  1148. are you looking up
  1149. who said that
  1150. yeah yeah
1151. did you look it up
1152. at least he's honest okay let me ask
  1153. another question
1154. come on brothers you gotta have takwa
1155. this is the month of ramadan
1156. okay we'll do another one
  1157. okay
1158. a little bit easier than the last one
  1159. which for profits
1160. are direct descendants of each other
1161. please don't look it up
1162. i saw your hand come up first
  1163. okay yeah that's good that's four
  1164. no that's four
1165. you said four masha'allah great job
  1166. round of applause
  1167. yeah
  1168. and remember if you
1169. answered correctly then just come over
1170. to us on the side maybe afterwards just
1171. give us your email and we'll send you an
1172. e um gift card inshaallah okay
1173. last one for the sisters i'm gonna give
1174. you an easy one because they were
  1175. cheating
  1176. [Laughter]
  1177. okay
1178. what was yusuf ali islam's real
  1179. brother's name
  1180. the full brother
  1181. vimy ameen marshall
  1182. all right
1183. um now we're gonna have malik introduce
1184. sister amina darwish and she's gonna be
  1185. speaking for us inshallah
1186. all right guys give us one second
  1187. okay
  1188. [Music]
  1189. okay
1190. if i get everyone quiet down
  1191. okay
1192. next i'm going to be introducing sister
  1193. amina darwish
1194. darwish started as the associate
1195. associate dean for religious and
1196. spiritual life and advisor for the
1197. muslim life in for muslim life in
1198. february of 2021 she earned a phd
1199. martial in chemical engineering before
1200. her passion for community building she
  1201. remains passionate about including
1202. ethics meaning and service into stem
  1203. disciplines
1204. she earned ijazat from the balam and
  1205. critical loyalty seminaries including
  1206. ejazza inten
1207. dr darwish brings unique a unique blend
1208. of understanding with the different
1209. cultures within the muslim community
1210. while staying grounded in traditional
1211. islamic scholarship please help me
  1212. welcome
1213. you guys all hear me okay
  1214. no
  1215. hello
  1216. hello
1217. what if i just project is this okay
  1218. no
1219. i'm not sure what to do
1220. i'm really good at it though
1221. what about this is this better
  1222. okay
1223. eat the mic is the
  1224. thing i'm good
1225. in the name of allah the lord of mercy
1226. the giver of mercy and prayers and
1227. blessings beyond his beloved prophet
  1228. muhammad
1229. so my my family and i we moved here in
  1230. august so alhamdulillah
1231. dream of a master that provides
1232. it's really beautiful to remember the of
1233. our ancestors i remember when people
1234. were talking about the muslim ban and
1235. they were saying we're going to stop
  1236. muslims from coming
1237. the biggest migration of muslims to
1238. america was actually enslaved people
1239. first of all you're 400 years too late
1240. second of all even if you belittle our
1241. muslim brothers and sisters that came
1242. before us doesn't mean we're going to do
  1243. that
1244. subhanallah when i went to sierra leone
1245. and i remember i was sharing this with
1246. some of the imams there and they looked
1247. at me like oh cute american that doesn't
  1248. know anything
1249. as hamdulillah they were my elders
1250. but they said actually those aren't the
1251. first muslims that went to america
1252. the first muslim that we know know of
1253. that went to america was actually a man
1254. by the name of man
1255. so mansa means king he was one of their
1256. kings and if you've heard of mansa musa
1257. this is his older brother
1258. subhanallah we had a muslim king that
1259. landed here a hundred and more than 150
1260. years before columbus doing what muslims
1261. do which is do dawah trade in judah
  1262. subhanallah and i just think it's
1263. significant to point out our spiritual
  1264. ancestry in this land
1265. these are our elders in terms of this
1266. particular piece of land of allah maybe
1267. we're all here because someone ran
1268. through the fields and said ya allah
1269. subhanallah alhamdulillah it's now past
1270. one in the morning and looking at a pact
  1271. masjid alhamdulillah
1272. subhanallah so i was hoping to actually
1273. talk about some of the young people in
  1274. the quran
  1275. mentions a specific group and it's a
  1276. really beautiful era
  1277. says
1278. they were young people that believed in
1279. their lord and we increased them in iman
1280. and part of what's significant about
1281. this group is they actually found
1282. spiritual support in each other
1283. and this is the age where actually
1284. support your support groups within your
1285. age group actually become really really
1286. important subhanallah and having good
1287. company and having good friends
  1288. is becomes really important
1289. i wanted to talk about actually two
1290. people one of the first one is ibrahim
  1291. alaihissalam which
1292. actually i think imam khan had mentioned
1293. he was a young man
1294. and it and he's having this conversation
  1295. with his people
1296. and is that these are in surat
  1297. allah says
1298. this is how we showed ibrahim
1299. the deeper meanings of everything
1300. and he has this fascinating conversation
1301. with his people and it says
1302. when it was pitch black at night he saw
1303. a planet and the specificity of the
1304. quran is the brightest thing in the
1305. night sky is actually a planet and not a
  1306. star subhanallah
1307. but he sees this planet and he says
  1308. this is my lord.
1309. when the star disappeared he said i
1310. cannot worship something that's not
  1311. constant
1312. which is fascinating our most
1313. foundational belief about allah is that
  1314. he is
1315. the one that is ever living and the one
  1316. that is sustaining
1317. i have no idea what that is
1318. hopefully that was an approval of al
  1319. qaeda
1320. when he sees the moon and it's bigger
1321. and he says this is my lord
1322. and of course he knows the moon's gonna
1323. set the moon sets and he says
1324. if my lord does not guide me i will
  1325. surely be lost
1326. and this is so beautiful part of our
1327. belief of allah has to be that he is
  1328. beyond even us
1329. if he is above us and our lord he has to
1330. be able to communicate with us
1331. subhanallah and this is again another
1332. foundational belief we have of allah
1333. that allah is beyond everything we can
1334. imagine and then he sends us prophets so
1335. that we can know more about allah
1336. and then the last day he says
1337. he sees the son he's like this one's
1338. much bigger than my lord and sure enough
1339. the sun sets he knows the sun's gonna
  1340. set
1341. and then he tells them in fact i worship
1342. the one that created the planet the moon
  1343. and the sun
1344. the one that put all of this into motion
  1345. and i i think he's subhanallah he's a
1346. young person as he's having this
  1347. conversation and when you're
1348. maturing into an adult usually we talk
1349. about like the physical or emotional
1350. maturity into adulthood this is also the
1351. point where someone is spiritually
1352. maturing into adulthood this is the
1353. first time in your life where you become
1354. where you are accountable in front of
1355. allah but this is also the first time in
1356. someone's life that they're able to ask
  1357. big questions
  1358. why are we here
1359. what is the purpose of life
1360. what do we know about allah i used to
1361. work at youth camps i used to work at
1362. minna and they're 12 to 18 year olds and
1363. we go out into the middle of the woods
1364. and we would have a lot of these
1365. conversations and i promise you nothing
1366. squeezed my brain more than the mini
  1367. kids
1368. all of the akita questions where you're
  1369. asking who is allah
1370. how do we know allah
1371. and if you want to get to know someone
  1372. you learn their name
1373. learn the names of allah
1374. this is our greatest introduction that
1375. we can have to allah
1376. and i just think it's so beautiful how
1377. it's young people that are having this
1378. discussion in the same way that we do
1379. dial with other people it's important
1380. that we have those same conversations
  1381. with our youth
1382. they're asking these questions for the
1383. very first time in their lives
1384. and not being able to have the space to
1385. answer them can create a spiritual
1386. crisis and it does create spiritual
1387. crisis for people that aren't able to
1388. sit and intellectually engage and
  1389. spiritually engage on allah
1390. which actually brings me to the second
1391. person i was hoping to talk about
1392. so another young person again subhan
  1393. allah says
1394. talked about the ayah where she said
  1395. yeah
1396. she's saying something that is
1397. inherently so devastating she's saying
1398. if only i had died before today and i
  1399. was long forgotten
1400. what would make someone say that
1401. and i and i in some of this fsc they say
1402. it was because she feared the the
  1403. physical pain of labor
1404. which i've met women that have had
1405. babies and said let's do this again
  1406. let's have more babies
1407. my personal opinion is not physical pain
1408. for someone to say this it has to be
1409. something inherent to who they are
  1410. that's getting threatened
1411. and if we think about who she was she
1412. used to she used to be in baton rouge
1413. used to worship all day she had lost
1414. panitata would provide her with us then
1415. she wouldn't give to other people
1416. like this is the person who lived at the
1417. masjid and all they did was pray and
  1418. feed the poor
1419. you say salah and zakat and that's all
  1420. she did subhanallah
1421. and she knows allah gave her a difficult
  1422. test
1423. and as soon as he is born
1424. speaks to her and he calms her down he
  1425. literally tells her
  1426. don't be sad
  1427. allah's got you
1428. and she comes back into the city
  1429. carrying sadness
1430. when someone speaks to you you don't
1431. even need to respond again allah's got
  1432. you
1433. she walks into the city and they
1434. immediately start shaming her with her
1435. name and with her family and i'm sure
1436. you guys of any any time i used to screw
1437. up and you're like who are your parents
1438. your doctor hannah's daughter did you
1439. really screw this up and it was like oh
1440. my god please don't tell my mom like
  1441. there isn't a bigger threat than i'm
1442. going to call your mom
1443. or your dad depending on
1444. on who what your parents relationship is
  1445. like subhanallah
1446. they told her maryam what have you done
  1447. you're haroon's sister
1448. your father was a good man your mother
1449. was not a bad woman how dare you do this
1450. also i don't know how long it takes to
  1451. go like this
1452. because she's holding the baby and she's
1453. pointing to him it says
1454. before she could before anything she's
  1455. still pointing towards him
  1456. and they immediately said
1457. how can we possibly talk to a newborn
  1458. child
  1459. and allah allows
  1460. them to speak
1461. allah has made me his servant he has
1462. given me the book and he has made me a
  1463. prophet
1464. what's also really fascinating about
1465. what he says in that series of ayat he
  1466. says
1467. i will be righteous towards my mother
  1468. i will have my mother's back
1469. this is supposed to be a religious
  1470. community
1471. in a masjid that was giving her a hard
1472. time and threatening who she is and
  1473. shaming her
1474. and the first thing the prophet
  1475. alaihissalam said
1476. besides that he is a prophet
  1477. i have my mother's back
  1478. stop shaming people
1479. i don't know why we have this like
1480. culture of like shame and guilt
1481. no one's ever been shamed or guilted
1482. into wanting to do more good
  1483. loves us
1484. internalize that allah loves you
1485. allah wants you to succeed
1486. allah set it up so that every good deed
1487. that you do you get 10 times the reward
1488. you make a mistake it only counts as one
1489. allah said anything you do ask me for
  1490. forgiveness i'll forgive you
  1491. allah forgives all shortcomings
1492. allah will forgive all of your sins if
  1493. you just ask
1494. allah wants us to succeed the
1495. manifestation of our parents love in our
1496. lives is a manifestation of the love
  1497. that allah gifted us
1498. since you were born allah has given you
  1499. people to love you
1500. since you were born allah has fed you
  1501. and clothed you
1502. allah the evidence of allah's love is so
  1503. overwhelming
1504. don't let anyone shame you or guilt you
  1505. out of it subhanallah
  1506. let's have these conversations and let's
1507. make sure our spiritual spaces are the
  1508. spaces that are
1509. loving and open for everyone to come in
1510. and be able to ask the questions
1511. i want to say this and i also want to
  1512. say i completely understand when a
1513. parent and their 14 year old comes home
1514. is like how do we know allah exists and
1515. they panic they're like they forgot
1516. everything i taught them in 14 years
  1517. they have it
1518. they're just asking it for the first
  1519. time
1520. may allah allow us all to have these
  1521. spiritual experiences together there's
1522. nothing more beautiful in the world than
1523. watching a group of young people have
1524. their very first spiritual experience
1525. together and they're bound forever
  1526. because of it subhanallah
1527. may allah can continue to put love in
1528. our hearts for each other
1529. continue to put love in our message for
  1530. everyone here i mean
1531. grant us your love the love of those
1532. that you love and the love of everything
1533. that brings us closer to your love and
  1534. zach
  1535. [Applause]
1536. those are my students i'm feeling
  1537. beloved
1538. so we are actually going to have to
1539. amina um after our last speaker come
  1540. back again for some q a insha'allah so
1541. we're not done with her yet thank you so
  1542. much alhamdulillah
1543. and yeah we can see how all these topics
1544. are starting to connect with each other
  1545. and
1546. to introduce our last speaker right into
1547. this before we get into our full q a
1548. session so we can have all of our
1549. information in sha allah we actually
1550. have shift of the janda joining us
  1551. online from dallas insha'allah so i'm
1552. going to introduce him really quickly
1553. and then we'll go on
  1554. online can't help them
1555. okay fine if you guys want trivia we can
  1556. do that in between
  1557. okay okay
1558. okay let's be trivia and since i'm here
  1559. i mean i guess we'll get the sisters
  1560. started
  1561. um
  1562. medic
1563. you have to get the brothers in and
  1564. challah um
  1565. so
  1566. we have um
1567. looking for a harder question for you
  1568. guys because
1569. everyone knows a lot of these and so
1570. um my first question to you is
  1571. so we have um
  1572. sures and medanispures right
1573. did you know that raise your hands
1574. great okay and so you know each soda
1575. from a different place that it was
  1576. revealed has different characteristics
1577. and so for example mech and surahs are
1578. usually a little bit shorter maybe
1579. they're rhyming because you know when
1580. they were revealed they were revealed in
1581. the city of the um disbelievers and so
1582. trying to capture attention as fast as
1583. you can so my question to you is
1584. how many surahs were revealed in mecca
  1585. yes
  1586. 30
  1587. 30 no yes
  1588. 16 nope
  1589. no not 40.
  1590. not 40.
  1591. okay you got it
1592. come on they're going to steal it
  1593. yes
  1594. not
  1595. not 64.
  1596. okay last one
  1597. last one
1598. you play higher or lower higher and
  1599. lower
  1600. higher
  1601. [Music]
  1602. yes
1603. that took a while guys come on we can go
  1604. faster
  1605. um
  1606. this
1607. okay too slow we're gonna have to get
  1608. another question
1609. wow he doesn't believe in you guys he
1610. said you're not going to get it
1611. it's okay i'm sure somebody will die
  1612. okay
  1613. number
  1614. man one
  1615. woman appeared
  1616. lowered
  1617. lower
  1618. a little lower
  1619. uh
1620. yeah come up to me for the ten dollar
1621. gift card and please if you didn't win
1622. like we don't have you tracked down so
1623. don't come to me for the ten dollar gift
  1624. card
  1625. okay
  1626. okay great so
1627. we got the echo again nice
1628. we're gonna do a really quick um intro
  1629. testing
1630. if you guys want to hear my voice and
  1631. delay then
  1632. the back over there
1633. okay this one now let's just do it so
1634. she called the nostalgia he's the
1635. founder director and instructor at falam
1636. institute mashallah and so he was born
1637. and raised in dallas he currently
1638. resides there with his wife and three
1639. children masha'allah he memorized the
1640. quran also at an early age in karachi
1641. and so after high school he actually
1642. returned to karachi and he pursued um
1643. studying islamic sciences at jamia
  1644. binoria
  1645. and he graduated
1646. he obtained a bastard bachelors and
1647. masters in arabic from the karachi
  1648. university
  1649. um
1650. and you know the rest of this i don't
1651. think you need to hear it in an echo
1652. delayed way so let's just have them on
  1653. inshaallah assalamu alaikum
1654. sent me some pictures of the gathering
1655. over there and uh such a beautiful uh
1656. lively gathering mashallah so many
1657. people especially young folks uh
1658. gathering together in these blessed
1659. nights of the month of ramadan at the
1660. masjid at the house of allah
  1661. to
1662. grow in their deen to grow with their
1663. spirituality to connect with the quran
1664. to connect with the book of allah it's
  1665. really inspiring masha'allah and i would
1666. have loved to have been there with you
  1667. alhamdulillah
1668. but you know obviously it being the
1669. month of ramadan it's a very you know
  1670. busy hectic time
1671. um and so i and i apologize a little bit
1672. for the delay in getting here i
1673. literally was just coming from another
1674. yam program that we were having here uh
1675. locally so um alhamdulillah happy to be
  1676. here with y'all
1677. and really uh just excited about this
1678. opportunity to be able to connect
  1679. uh
1680. with the quran uh as is the title
1681. powered by the quran and to be able to
1682. spend this quality time together and be
1683. able to reflect on the book of allah
1684. together and be able to come closer to
  1685. allah together
  1686. so
1687. i'm going to go ahead and jump right
  1688. into the session
1689. and you know what i'm going to be
  1690. talking about is
  1691. how the quran
  1692. powered
1693. the sahaba radhiallahu anhum the
1694. companions of the prophet salallahu
  1695. islam in their faith
  1696. and
  1697. the
1698. i wanted to share a story and inshallah
1699. discuss it from the point of view of
  1700. this story
  1701. and
1702. you know this is a little bit of an
  1703. interesting kind of story
1704. but i really felt that this would you
1705. know help to make the point
1706. of how the quran is just such a powerful
1707. source of light a source of faith
1708. and a way to be able to find you know
1709. it's a means to finding our way and to
1710. gaining that light of iman and faith
1711. and i wanted to share the story of none
  1712. other than
1713. one of the most you know um
1714. illustrious people from our history one
1715. of the most illustrious of the
1716. companions of the prophet sallallahu
1717. alaihi wasallam and that is none other
  1718. than um
  1719. um
1720. is a very interesting story
1721. um and maybe some of y'all have kind of
  1722. come across it before
1723. but uh for the sake of you know making
1724. sure that everyone is able to
1725. understand and follow the conversation
1726. and be able to benefit from it um
  1727. is
  1728. the individual
1729. uh about whom the prophet sallallahu
1730. alaihi wasallam made these kinds of
1731. comments where the prophet salallahu
1732. said there are two individuals that you
  1733. know are
1734. uh that that i rely upon that i depend
1735. on in that sense like two individuals i
  1736. can count on
1737. in the heavens that is
1738. the archangels gabriel and michael
1739. and there are two individuals on the
1740. earth and they are abu bakr and um
  1741. the prophet salallahu
  1742. when you
1743. come walking down a street when you go
  1744. walking down a path
  1745. and shaytaan
1746. is on that path he changes his path
  1747. shaitaan runs from you
1748. right we're all trying to run from
1749. shaytan and shaytan runs from you
1750. and the prophet sallallahu alaihi
  1751. wasallam said
1752. that i am the seal of prophethoods i am
  1753. the finality of prophets
1754. if there was going to be a prophet after
1755. me would have been somebody like omar
  1756. so
  1757. that is the
1758. you know that those are the accolades of
1759. umar that is who um was i mean to be
1760. given the title why the prophet
  1761. salallahu of
  1762. that you
  1763. as a person
  1764. are the distinguisher
1765. between right and wrong good and bad so
1766. just imagine you know how remarkable um
  1767. is
1768. but he wasn't always that person he
1769. wasn't always that person um
1770. has a very interesting history before he
1771. became muslim in the first few years of
1772. the mission of the prophet salallahu
1773. salaam he was actually one of
  1774. the staunchest
  1775. opponents
1776. to islam and to the message of the
1777. prophet salallahu there are many of the
1778. early companions who actually were
1779. tormented and even tortured by um
1780. that's how staunchly against he was
1781. that's how staunchly he was against the
1782. mission of the prophet salallahu and the
  1783. muslims there's even a fascinating story
  1784. where
  1785. there was a
1786. a couple who were from the early muslims
1787. and once the you know the uh
1788. the opportunity was given that the
  1789. muslims could
1790. migrate to abyssinia to habasha east
1791. africa and take refuge there take asylum
  1792. there
1793. that they decided to take that
1794. opportunity because they were dealing
1795. with a lot of you know
1796. torment and persecution and oppression
  1797. and torture
  1798. and specifically um
  1799. he had
1800. you know tortured these this couple and
1801. he had tormented them so they decide to
  1802. go to east africa
  1803. and
1804. they are traveling they're leaving and
  1805. when they reach
1806. the boundary of the city of mecca they
1807. reach near the city limits
1808. the husband remembered that he forgot
1809. something that they would need
1810. so he said i have to go get it so his
1811. wife said what are we gonna do
1812. and so he said you stay here you wait
1813. here with our stuff and i'm gonna go get
1814. it and come right back don't worry
1815. she said hurry hurry you know i don't
1816. want us just i don't want somebody to
1817. come and get us and snatch us or do
  1818. something bad to us
1819. so he goes to get the stuff and a little
1820. while later guess who comes walking
  1821. along
1822. and now this sahabi this woman when she
  1823. sees
1824. uh this muslim woman when she sees
1825. just like you know her her heart just
  1826. drops
1827. and um walks up to her and says you know
1828. he sees bags with her so where are you
  1829. going
1830. and she says in that moment i just was
1831. overcome by just this emotion
1832. that you know a frustration of you know
  1833. being tormented
  1834. so i don't know i just found this
1835. you know this this courage
1836. and i said to him that you know you have
  1837. made our lives impossible
  1838. so we are leaving
1839. and you did this to us
  1840. when he hears that
1841. he has a little moment of
  1842. reflection
1843. and he kind of looks down he looks away
  1844. he's it's as if he's a bit embarrassed
  1845. of himself
  1846. and
1847. he just says to her he says
1848. may god be with you on your journey
1849. and without making eye contact he just
1850. kind of turns around and walks away
1851. now she's shocked and astonished by this
1852. interaction like what just happened here
1853. a little while later her husband comes
  1854. back and she's just
1855. looks like you know like we say like she
  1856. looks like she's seen a ghost
1857. so he says to her
1858. that you know what happened is
  1859. everything okay
1860. and she says that you won't believe what
  1861. happened
  1862. he says
  1863. what
1864. so she says omar came he's like oh no oh
  1865. my god
  1866. what happened
1867. like how are you still here how are you
  1868. still alive
  1869. and she says that
1870. you know she tells him about what
  1871. happened what transpired
1872. and then she has this look on her face
1873. and the husband says to her
  1874. attorney islami
1875. that wait a second because you know he
1876. knows his wife and he's like do you
1877. actually think there's a chance he could
  1878. become muslim
1879. and she said yes i do
1880. so he says to her at that time
  1881. that the
  1882. donkey of al-khattab
1883. would become muslim before the son of
  1884. al-khattab umar would
1885. and he says you know i regretted that
1886. statement later of course but
  1887. that's what um was
  1888. now he
1889. has a couple of interactions with the
  1890. quran
1891. like where does how does somebody go
  1892. from there
1893. to then where he ends up
  1894. what i what i started with
  1895. and
  1896. literally the theme is
  1897. powered by the quran
1898. so he says that one day
  1899. he goes to
  1900. the haram
1901. and the prophet salallahu is there and
  1902. the prophet was praying
1903. and the prophet had the protection of
1904. abu talib and that's why he could go and
1905. just kind of pray by himself
1906. and you know nobody could kind of touch
1907. him even though he was assaulted and
1908. attacked a few times but for the most
1909. part they just knew they had to leave
1910. him alone because of abu talib
  1911. and
  1912. um
1913. who said i said let me just start let me
1914. listen to what this guy is saying
1915. so he hears the prophet saws i'm
  1916. reciting
  1917. that i swear
1918. by what you can see
1919. and by what you cannot see
  1920. it's very powerful very
  1921. thought-provoking
1922. that think about everything you can see
1923. and think about everything you can see
1924. that all of it is created by allah
  1925. this indeed
1926. is a message being delivered by a noble
  1927. messenger
1928. and he says when i heard this i thought
1929. to myself oh i get it
  1930. he's a poet
  1931. he's a poet he's good with words
1932. he uses these fancy words to kind of
  1933. entrance people
1934. and then the prophet saws recited the
  1935. next ayah
1936. these are not the words of a poet
  1937. why don't you believe
1938. and he says when i heard that i said
  1939. whoa
1940. how do you know what i was thinking
  1941. i get it
  1942. he's not he's not a poet
  1943. he's a sorcerer
  1944. he's a soothsayer he's a mind reader
  1945. he's a magician
1946. and then the prophet recited in the next
  1947. verse
1948. these are not the words of a soothsayer
1949. these are not the chantings of a of a
  1950. magician or a sorcerer
1951. think why are you not thinking
1952. why are you not reflecting
1953. and he said it hit me like a ton of
1954. bricks i was like oh my god
  1955. what's going on here
  1956. then what is it
  1957. if it's not
1958. poetry if it's not sorcery
1959. then what could this be
1960. and then the prophet recited the next
  1961. verse
1962. that this is revelation from the lord of
  1963. the worlds
1964. and then he continued reciting the rest
  1965. of it
  1966. very powerful
1967. that if he were to fabricate this and
1968. make this up from himself
1969. we would grab his right thumb
1970. and we would cut him at the neck
1971. and nobody could protect him that this
  1972. is from allah guaranteed
  1973. signed sealed and dated
1974. this is a reminder for people who are
  1975. conscious of god
  1976. and we know
1977. some of you all are rejecting this and
1978. still refuse to believe this even though
1979. you know deep down inside in your heart
1980. of hearts that this is the truth you
1981. still reject it and deny it
1982. that this will be a source of great
1983. regret and remorse and the downfall of
  1984. those who disbelieve
1985. this is the ultimate truth
1986. so praise and glorify your lord the name
1987. of your lord who is mighty
  1988. who's brand
1989. and he says i heard that and i was just
  1990. in a daze
  1991. but he says unfortunately
  1992. it still didn't
1993. you know kind of break
  1994. the
1995. you know just the frame of mind that i
  1996. was in
1997. and then the story fast forwards where
  1998. one day
1999. the leaders of quraysh are talking about
2000. you know oh muhammad sallam and the
2001. muslims that and islam this and the
  2002. sahaba that
2003. and he finally says you know you guys
  2004. just talk a lot
2005. i'm going to do something about it
2006. they're like yeah go ahead
2007. so he says that he
2008. brandished his sword just kind of
  2009. took his sword out
2010. and it's like somebody walking around
  2011. with a gun
2012. and he just started walking
2013. and he said i'm going to go take care of
  2014. muhammad sallallahu alaihi
2015. and he says along the way he runs into
2016. a muslim who who was keeping his islam
2017. hidden private nobody knew he was muslim
2018. and he says that i ran into him and he
  2019. saw umar
2020. walking around with his sword waving a
2021. sword around and he's like that doesn't
  2022. look good
2023. so he says what's going on everything
2024. okay and he said i'm gonna go take care
2025. of this muhammad problem once and for
  2026. all
  2027. and now this
  2028. this guy who's a muslim
2029. obviously and he's keeping his islam
  2030. hidden
  2031. private
2032. but he hears somebody talking about
2033. attacking the prophet saddam and it just
2034. you know he can't listen to that
2035. so he says you know he says i to he said
2036. that you know you just want to kill
2037. somebody because he says allah is my
2038. lord and he comes to you with proof okay
2039. and he says you sound like one of them
2040. you talk like one let me take care of
2041. you then i'll go take care of him
2042. so then he said i you know the other guy
2043. pulled the sword out as well and they
2044. were about to go at it in the street
2045. and then he said i just got like
2046. you know frustrated and i said to omar
2047. that you know you go around
2048. trying to tell other people what to do
2049. but you can't even keep your own family
  2050. in order
2051. and he says what do you mean by that
  2052. and he said that
2053. i told him at that time
2054. you know your sister fatima bintal
  2055. khatta her husband said
2056. they're muslim they were one they were
2057. some of the earliest muslims um sister
2058. became muslim before he did
2059. and so he says that they're muslim
  2060. he says what
2061. he says i'll deal with you later and he
2062. storms over to his sister's house
2063. gets outside the door he can hear
  2064. somebody talking inside
  2065. bangs on the door
2066. the talking stops his brother-in-law
2067. comes and opens the door
2068. almost pounces on him through the door
2069. pushes through the door and starts
  2070. beating him
2071. and then his sister jumps in and tries
  2072. to stop him and
2073. he kind of pushes her off and she falls
  2074. and is bleeding and
2075. and then i'm gonna realize is like what
  2076. am i doing here
2077. so then he kind of stops and his sister
2078. says to him you can kill us if you want
2079. but you can't take our faith away from
  2080. us
2081. and so then he kind of settles down a
  2082. little
2083. and then he says you know when he
2084. settles down a little he sees some pages
2085. and there's a quran written on it
  2086. and
2087. he says that let me see this and she
2088. takes it she goes no you can't touch
  2089. this
2090. and he's like let me see it
2091. so then she says okay kind of you know
2092. clean yourself up a little fix yourself
  2093. up
2094. and then he takes the pages and he
  2095. starts reading
2096. that we did not send down the quran upon
2097. you o muhammad sallallahu alaihi
2098. wasallam to make your life more
  2099. difficult
2100. to ruin you no no
2101. this is a reminder for those who will
  2102. fear allah
2103. this is revelation sent from the one who
2104. created the earth and the heavens most
  2105. high ar
2106. that he is the most merciful positioned
  2107. above his throne the
2108. he owns everything in the heavens
2109. everything in the earth everything
2110. between them and everything buried under
  2111. the earth
2112. and if you speak out loud he knows what
2113. you're saying but he also knows what you
2114. say silently and even what you're
  2115. thinking inside your head
2116. that he is allah there's no one worthy
2117. of worship except for him and to him
2118. belong the most beautiful of names
  2119. and he reads this
  2120. and he's just
  2121. just changed
2122. right we talk about powered by the quran
  2123. his life has changed
  2124. and he says
2125. he looks up from the pages
  2126. tears in his eyes
2127. and he says to his sister
2128. take me to the prophet salallahu
  2129. and
2130. there was someone hiding in the house
2131. when he had heard some of the voices
  2132. inside it's
2133. teaching them the quran that's what
  2134. those pages were for
2135. and he comes out of hiding and he says
  2136. congratulations
2137. the prophet saws have made dua for you
2138. that you would accept islam
  2139. and
  2140. um
2141. they take him to where the process is in
  2142. the house
2143. when they arrive at the door and they
2144. knock on the door and somebody looks out
2145. and they say oh my there's this panic oh
  2146. no it's alma
  2147. three days ago hamza
  2148. would become muslim
  2149. was big tough guy
2150. so he goes to the door
2151. and he opens the door and he grabs
  2152. what do you want
2153. what are you trying to do here
2154. and the prophet salallahu it's okay
  2155. leave him
  2156. come
2157. and he sits down in front of the prophet
2158. saws he says what do you want what are
  2159. you here for
2160. and he says i'm here
  2161. to accept islam
2162. and he puts his hand in the hand of the
  2163. prophet saws
  2164. and he becomes muslim
2165. and from that point on forward abdullah
  2166. ibn mas
2167. says we never felt like we
2168. would lose after that day because we had
  2169. omar with us
2170. that very few people can say
  2171. that
2172. islam was strengthened through them
  2173. but
2174. can be said about him
  2175. this really remarkable scholar
2176. he said something very beautiful
2177. um i found it quite
  2178. thought provoking
2179. he said that all the sahabah
  2180. were the mureed
2181. of the prophet salallahu they came
  2182. seeking the prophet sasa
2183. but umar was the murad of the prophet
2184. the prophet saw salaam prayed for umar
2185. he wanted umar on his side
  2186. so while everyone
2187. was trying to find the process on the
2188. prophet saw was waiting for umar
2189. he was looking for omar
  2190. and
2191. this transformation that omar went
  2192. through
2193. right to be completely as opposite as
  2194. you can imagine
2195. and to end up here
  2196. it was a quran
  2197. that powered that journey
2198. it was the quran that transformed him
2199. and this is the month of ramadan this is
2200. the month of the quran
2201. so the quran is not
2202. information the quran is transformation
2203. the quran is not informative just simply
2204. it is informative but it is more
  2205. importantly transformative
2206. and so as we engage with the quran here
2207. in the month of ramadan particularly
2208. here towards the end of the month of
  2209. ramadan
2210. let's keep that in mind let's have that
  2211. intention
2212. that we want to transform ourselves to
  2213. the quran
  2214. and that's why particularly
  2215. my advice to everybody
  2216. to myself
2217. but to everyone particularly younger
  2218. folks
2219. young men young women of our community
  2220. is to
  2221. [Music]
2222. read the translation of the quran
2223. strive to understand the message of the
  2224. quran
  2225. and that's
2226. what will really allow you to connect
  2227. with that message
2228. and that is what will lead insha'allah
2229. to the transformation that we're all
  2230. looking for
